Melchor de Mencos Border Crossing to Belize [2026]

Start with what this page cannot do. On 12 September 2026, every official source for this crossing was unreachable. Guatemalan migration (igm.gob.gt), Belize Immigration (immigration.gov.bz), PACT (pactbelize.org), Travel Belize (travelbelize.org) and INGUAT (inguat.gob.gt) refused every request method we tried - HTTP 403 on direct requests, an IP block and a CAPTCHA wall through a reader proxy. Every fee, hour and fare below comes from booking operators and travel guides, named where used - and where they disagree, we print the disagreement rather than pick a winner.

Quick summary

• Sourcing: operators and travel guides only; no government page on either side could be read.
• Hours: plan around 06:00-22:00 on the Guatemalan side - the one figure both sources agree on. The Belize side is contradictory.
• Leaving Guatemala: no exit fee is published anywhere we read; unofficial requests are reported.

Getting to the border from Flores and Santa Elena

Two things that table hides. First, no bus line sells Flores to Melchor as a bookable ticket: Fuente del Norte’s engine returns no departures for that pair, either direction, on both dates queried, and the only priced Flores-to-Melchor product anyone publishes is the US$30 shuttle in the row above, quoted by an aggregator with no operator, timetable or pickup point attached. The colectivo has no timetable either - the only times any source names are one traveller’s “10 am and 12:30 pm”, hedged with “as far as we know”. You turn up and go; the destination is painted across the windscreens.

Second, the through-bus to Belize City crosses without selling you the border: one departure, nothing to handle at the posts. Those Fuente del Norte figures are dated quotes, not a tariff - see Fuente del Norte fares, Guatemala City to Flores and Tikal and intercity bus fares.

The crossing, step by step

Guatemala side

1. Arrive at the Melchor de Mencos terminal. bordercrossinghub warns to ignore drivers claiming the line is 2-3 km away, and to expect touts.
2. Walk to the border building - five minutes, out to the main road and across the Rio Mopan bridge. Entry and exit are both handled there.
3. Guatemalan immigration: passport, exit stamp, no published fee. Bookaway is explicit that no fees are required to leave Guatemala and none to enter either country. roads-and-rivers reports travellers being asked for a small payment anyway, described as illegally demanded, though it did not happen to them; bordercrossinghub advises declining politely or demanding a receipt.
4. Changing money. Informal traders work the terminal; bordercrossinghub rates them poorly and points to ATMs in Flores or San Ignacio - with a US card, see ATM cards that work in Guatemala. We are not printing the street rate one source quoted.

Belize side

Hours are the unresolved part. bordercrossinghub says the Benque Viejo land port runs daily 06:00 to 22:00, “rather than around the clock”. Bookaway says the opposite for the inbound direction - that the border going into Guatemala is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Both agree the Guatemalan side is 06:00-22:00, so plan around that. Neither is a government source, and we could not read one.

Entering Belize: an immigration form and your passport. No entry fee is published by any source we read; Bookaway says you get an exit stamp leaving both countries. bordercrossinghub says to carry proof of onward travel - an aggregator’s claim, not a published rule.

Leaving Belize later, at this same post: BZ$40, about US$20. belizehub splits that into a BZ$30 departure tax, BZ$7.50 conservation fee and BZ$2.50 border development fee, and says the conservation portion does not apply under 24 hours in the country. Treat the split as the weaker claim - that article’s own title carries the year 2023, and no Belizean government page could confirm it. The BZ$40 total is what three independent sources agree on, and belizehub is clear it is cash only.

Onward into Belize

Benque Viejo del Carmen sits about 3 km past the line. roads-and-rivers says there are no buses at the border itself, leaving the walk or a taxi, about BZ$10 per person through to San Ignacio; the other way, bordercrossinghub quotes BZ$7 by taxi or BZ$2 for the 20-minute bus. From Benque, backpackerswanderlust says buses to Belize City go roughly every 30 minutes, take 2.5 to 3 hours and cost BZ$9 to BZ$10. No source publishes a Belize-side timetable, only frequencies. The weakest source in our ledger puts border waits at 30 minutes early morning rising to 1-2 hours in the afternoon - attributed, not asserted.

The errand worth doing in Melchor: your Tikal ticket

guatemala.com reports that the paper Tikal ticket must now be bought at Banco de los Trabajadores (Bantrab) branches, and names Melchor de Mencos as one of only five places where that is possible; the others are Guatemala City, Antigua Guatemala, Solola and Santa Elena. If you are heading for the park, this town has a counter most of the route does not. The official online alternative, boletos.culturaguate.com, lists park entry for foreigners at Q150.00, plus a 2.30% surcharge on international cards.

What we could not verify

• Anything official, from either government. Five domains, every request method tried, all blocked on 12 September 2026.
• The Belize-side hours - two non-government sources flatly contradict each other.
• The BZ$30 / BZ$7.50 / BZ$2.50 split. Only the BZ$40 total is corroborated.
• A single colectivo fare. Published figures run Q30 to Q50.
• Any colectivo or Belize-side timetable. Only frequencies exist in print.
• Vehicle costs. One source asserts a Guatemalan import permit and a fumigation fee exist; no source publishes an amount, so we print none.
• Whether the unofficial payments reported at Melchor are current. Both mentions are anecdote.

Read on 12 September 2026 from non-government sources. Operator figures are quotes for specific dates, not tariffs.
