- 📄 Your NIT (no dashes)
- 🔑 SAT username + password (same as Agencia Virtual)
- 📧 Email linked to your SAT account (in case it asks for verification code)
- 📋 Scanned DPI (if updating data)
The RTU (Registro Tributario Unificado) is SAT’s central system where all Guatemala taxpayers are registered. When someone asks for “your RTU”, they generally mean the official certificate you download from Agencia Virtual showing your full data: tax regime, registered economic activities, fiscal address, active tax obligations.
Quick summary: NIT = the number (your unique ID). RTU = the system holding all your data. RTU certificate = the PDF you download from Agencia Virtual showing that information.

How to print your RTU — step by step

- Login: NIT (no dashes) + SAT password
- Verification: if it asks for a code, confirm via email/SMS
- Menu: look for “Constancias”, “Mi RTU” or “Información Tributaria”
- Download PDF: system generates the certificate with your current information
- Validity: the digitally-signed PDF has the same legal validity as a printed one
Tip: Save the PDF to Drive/iCloud. SAT servers crash exactly when you need them most.

- Changes in partners/shareholders (companies)
Penalty for not updating: Variable, typically Q500-2,000 + interest.
Diaspora — managing RTU from the US
| Action | How to do it from the US |
|---|---|
| Print RTU | Agencia Virtual works normally from any country |
| Update fiscal address | Yes, you can update to an alternate Guatemalan address (family or accountant) |
| Change regime | Yes, via Agencia Virtual without issue |
| Reactivate suspended RTU | Difficult without in-person — you’ll need an authorized accountant in GT |
| Cancel RTU | Requestable online but sometimes requires in-person — depends on case |
| Keep RTU active without operating | Yes, as long as you file zero returns per your regime |
What NOT to do
- Don’t print an outdated RTU — SAT updates data instantly, download fresh each time
- Don’t share your SAT password — for someone else to download your RTU, you need to sign a formal authorization
- Don’t ignore the “RTU outdated” warning — it means SAT detected an inconsistency with RENAP that needs fixing
- Don’t use old PDFs at banks — banks check issue date, want fresh (under 30 days)
- Don’t underestimate regime changes — moving from Small Contributor to General has big implications
