Mundo Maya International Airport (FRS) sits about 2 km from the Flores causeway and 62-65 km from the Tikal park gate. That asymmetry is the whole decision: the island is a Q20 taxi hop, the ruins are over an hour away — against a gate that closes at 18:00. It is a clock problem, not a price problem.

- Land at 17:10 or later and the same-day visit is gone. Plan on sleeping inside the park and walking in at 06:00.
- Not published by anyone: an airport taxi fare to the park, any airport-run or public transfer, and any GUA-FRS airline fare.

Read those two rows as what they are: hotels selling a ride to their own front door. Neither publishes a drop at the visitor-centre gate for non-guests, so if you are sleeping elsewhere, ask before you book.
Jungle Lodge states that “every shuttle is linked to the most of the flights coming from Guatemala City”, advises booking two days in advance, and adds that “schedules are subject to changes.” Its return leg leaves the park at 05:00, 08:15, 11:00, 14:00 and 17:00. Tikal Inn advertises the reverse trip (“Tikal - Flores / Airport/Bus stations”) but publishes no times for it.
Which arrivals still make the park the same day
Nonstop Guatemala City-Flores flights are run by TAG Airlines (4-5 daily) and Avianca (3 daily — three a day since 29 March 2026, not three a week), flight time one hour. Laid against the 18:00 close and the published 1 h 10-1 h 15 drive:

Two cautions on that table. The 13:50 arrival leaves ten minutes to deplane, collect a bag and find the van — treat that row as the schedule, not a promise. And delays are the documented risk here: flights on this pair “are often delayed in both directions”, which matters more than usual when the connection is to a timed shuttle and a park that shuts.

The route the shuttle takes
The Ministry of Culture and Sports publishes the road itself. Translated from its Spanish original: you can arrive by air at Mundo Maya international airport, where on landing several companies and agencies offer transport and guide services; then from Flores you take highway CA-13 towards Melchor de Mencos, take the left-hand turn at Aldea Ixlú towards El Remate, and follow that road to the park entrance. It adds that collective and private microbuses run daily.
Distance readings, all published, none identical: 63 km and about one hour (Ministry of Culture and Sports, measured from the city of Flores), 65 km and 1 hour 15 minutes (Tikal Inn), 62.1 km / 38.6 miles and about one hour ten minutes (a transport agency).
Stay at the park or stay in Flores
Both airport shuttles exist to deliver guests to hotels inside Tikal National Park. Sleeping inside buys the one thing the road cannot: you are already past the 62-65 km when the gate opens at 06:00, and the Ministry’s extraordinary 04:00-06:00 sunrise window is reachable at all. Going into Flores first is the cheap move — Q20 by taxi, about 2 km — but it changes which timetable you are on. The departures that start in town are the Flores-origin services, and none of them are sold from the terminal.
Buy the park ticket before you fly. The Ministry’s portal sells foreign entry at Q150.00 and national entry at Q25.00, adds a 2.30% surcharge on international cards, lets children under 10 in free without a park ticket, and states plainly that a foreigner who buys a national ticket will not be allowed in.
What is not published
We leave these blank rather than fill them:
- No airport taxi fare to the park. The only airport taxi fare published anywhere we read is Q20 into Flores. The “USD 45 to USD 60” figure that circulates is an agency page quoting Flores to Tikal, not airport to Tikal.
- No airport-run, airline-run or public transfer, and no documented transfer desk, counter or price board inside the terminal.
- No airline fare for Guatemala City-Flores. TAG’s site and its booking domain both returned HTTP 403 and Avianca’s returned no page body on 12 September 2026, so we publish the schedule and no price.
- No journey time from Jungle Lodge, and no departure times from Tikal Inn.
- No rainy-season or holiday road claim. INSIVUMEH published no Petén road or airport statement on the day of research.
- Fuente del Norte does not serve the airport or the park. Its own station list runs Guatemala, Aguilar Batres, Sayaxché, El Naranjo, Melchor de Mencos, Santa Elena/Flores, Esquipulas, Belize City and Quetzaltenango.
