Iximché is the Postclassic Maya city in Tecpán, Chimaltenango, that was the capital of the Kaqchikel kingdom and, from 1524 to 1526, the first capital of the Kingdom of Guatemala. Entry is Q50 for foreigners and Q5 for Guatemalans, and it opens every day, per the Ministerio de Cultura y Deportes (read 24 September 2026).

The ministry lists the site and its museum separately, each with the same Q5 and Q50 figures. We could not confirm whether one ticket covers both — ask at the gate. A 2022 Ministerio de Cultura list of archaeological sites gave the same Q5 and Q50.
Hours: two official versions
The Ministerio de Cultura’s listings say Monday to Sunday, 8:00 to 16:00. CONAP’s tourism portal, which lists Iximché as a protected area, gives 8:30 to 16:30. The ministry runs the site, but the safe plan satisfies both: arrive after 8:30 and be done by 16:00. The site museum keeps shorter hours — Tuesday to Sunday, 9:00 to 12:00 and 13:00 to 16:00 — so on a Monday you will see the ruins but not the museum.
Getting there
The Ministerio de Cultura’s directions: take the CA-1 west, turn left at kilometre 88 onto the road to the town of Tecpán, and follow the paved road for 3 km to the site. The ministry puts it 40 km from Chimaltenango, 56 km from Antigua Guatemala and 91 km from Guatemala City, about 1.5 hours; CONAP estimates an hour for the same 91 km, and INGUAT’s guide says 1.5 to 2 hours from the capital. INGUAT adds that the access road is paved and well signposted to the entrance.
What you are looking at
- A defensive city. Iximché sits on the Ratzamut promontory, a spur of Cerro Tecpán, flanked by deep ravines. The entrance was defended by gates and an artificial moat cut across the promontory from ravine to ravine, per the ministry.
- More than 170 structures over about 15,570 square metres, in six civic-ceremonial plazas with pyramid temples, long platforms, altars and ball courts. Groups A and C are the monumental cores, taken to be the seats of the kingdom’s two supreme rulers.
- Adobe, not stone, above the platforms. Walls and columns were adobe with perishable roofs, which is why the fires of the early colonial years left so little standing. The ministry’s site listing dates two fires, 1 January 1514 and 7 February 1526, noting that the Memorial de Sololá places the first in 1513.
- The name. From the Kaqchikel ixim (ramón or maize) and che’ (tree), for the ramón tree that grows in the area, whose fruit is edible.
- The site museum, with ceramics, stone tools and pre-Hispanic bone from mid-20th-century excavations, and a scale model of the site.

The alliance broke down over Spanish tribute demands and abuses; the Kaqchikel abandoned the city, and part of its building material was later reused in the town of Tecpán, the ministry notes.
