The Grutas de Lanquín cost Q30 for foreign visitors, Q20 for Guatemalans and Q10 for children, and are open daily from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The caves sit on the edge of Lanquín town in Alta Verapaz. About 400 metres of the system is lit, with handrails and steps, and at dusk the bats that live inside pour out of the cave mouth. At Banguat’s reference rate of Q7.63 per US dollar (23 September 2026), the foreigner fee is about $3.95.
The fees come from the Ministerio de Cultura y Deportes’ Sistema de Información Cultural listing (last modified 2 July 2026), which also records that the caves are administered by the Municipalidad de Lanquín and cites an Acuerdo Presidencial (presidential accord) of 26 May 1955. Guatemala.com (February 2025) gives the same Q20/Q30 split and the same hours.
Lanquín is also the base for Semuc Champey, 11 km south of town. The Grutas are the other half of a Lanquín stay: a short walk or ride from your hostel, best done in the late afternoon so you are still at the cave when the bats leave.

Timing the bat flight around the 5 p.m. closing
The official hours end at 5:00 p.m. The bats come out at dusk. Those two facts do not line up, and no source we found explains exactly how the park handles visitors who stay for the show.
What the sources do say:
- Guatemala.com (Feb 2025): as evening falls the bats leave the caves to feed; be there before nightfall.
- Lonely Planet: time your visit to sunset, around 6 p.m., when they fly out in formations dense enough to obscure the sky.
- Wikivoyage: arrive just before sunset and wait, and you can also watch from the riverbank outside the cave mouth.
The practical plan: pay and do the lit cave walk in the mid-to-late afternoon, well before 5:00 p.m., then ask at the ticket office where you may wait for the exodus. If the answer is outside, the riverbank is the fallback. And keep your flash off: Lonely Planet warns that bats are extremely light-sensitive and that flash photography can disorient them and, in some cases, blind them.

The Ministry records that the Q’eqchi’ people regard the caves as the heart of the sky and consider them sacred, and that the Río Lanquín is believed to be born inside the cave system. GuateValley adds that the river runs about 12 km from here to the Río Cahabón. Wikivoyage records a story of a bridge inside that collapsed under King Leopold of Belgium during a 1958 visit and was renamed for his fall. Treat that one as local legend; we found no primary record of it.
GuateValley’s advice is blunt: if enclosed spaces bother you, do not go in.

GuateValley gives 65 km from Cobán rather than the Ministry’s 58 km; GuateValley and Guatemala.com both put the drive at roughly an hour and a half. For the long leg from the capital, see Guatemala City to Cobán, and for moving on north, Lanquín to Flores.

Sleep in Lanquín.
