Guatemala City to Flores & Tikal: Buses, Flights & Prices [2026]

The Guatemala City to Flores route is the longest and most important domestic transport route in Guatemala. Flores is the gateway to Tikal, the most significant Maya archaeological site in the country. You have two fundamentally different choices: fly in 1 hour or ride a bus for 9 hours.

Having done this trip both ways multiple times, my strong recommendation is to fly if your budget allows it. The bus ride is long, the road passes through remote areas, and the time savings are enormous. That said, an overnight bus (Fuente del Norte or Cristobal Colon, below) saves you a hotel night.

The Flight Option: TAG Airlines

TAG Airlines operates 4-5 daily flights (FlightsFrom, 12 Sep 2026) from La Aurora International Airport (GUA) to Mundo Maya International Airport (FRS) near Flores, on ATR 72 turboprops, in about 60 minutes.

Price: no published fare could be verified on 12 September 2026 — tag.com.gt and its booking host vuela.tagairlines.com both returned HTTP 403 to us, and avianca.com returned no body. Check the airline directly at tag.com.gt. Expect higher prices in peak season (December-April) and around Semana Santa.

Schedule (FlightsFrom, retrieved 12 September 2026): seven to eight GUA to FRS departures a day, first at 05:45 and last at 21:30, 50 to 60 minutes in the air. TAG flies 4-5 daily on ATR 72s; Avianca flies 3 daily on A320s, having gone to three daily frequencies on 29 March 2026. TAG’s fare families, its 20 lb domestic bag limit and its refund rules are on TAG Airlines domestic flights.

Luggage: TAG publishes a domestic checked-bag limit of 20 lb (9 kg); its Light fare includes no checked bag. Check the allowance on your fare before packing.

Why fly: You save 8 hours each way, which means an extra full day at Tikal. For a typical 3-day Peten trip, flying saves you two travel days. The math strongly favors flying unless you are on a very tight budget.

Cancellations: Small planes can be grounded due to weather, especially during rainy season (June-October). Always have a bus backup plan.

Airline baggage allowances

TAG and Avianca list the following baggage rules (read 25 October 2026):

TAG’s checked-baggage page separately says domestic passengers may have one or two pieces adding up to 20 lbs. That combined-weight wording differs from its Plus fare display. Its domestic checked-baggage limit is printed as 20 lbs (9 Kg), with $3 USD per additional pound. TAG asks domestic passengers to arrive 2 hours before departure; this is an airport arrival instruction.

Avianca identifies an included first checked piece for Classic and Flex. Its Basic carry-on purchase table lists these domestic Guatemala starting prices:

Avianca qualifies these charges for peak-season variation and for Basic bundles purchased before January 27. Its checked-bag table for purchases more than 48 hours before departure displays domestic Ecuador and Guatemala prices of From USD 30 for a first Basic/Light bag, From USD 40 for a second bag, and From USD 60 for a third bag.

Overnight Bus: Linea Dorada — status unverified

Resellers still list Linea Dorada on this route. We could not verify a single Linea Dorada fare, departure time or terminal address from a published source in 2026. Its domain, lineadorada.com.gt, returns an online-casino page rather than a bus site as of 12 September 2026, and Prensa Libre reported (29 November 2019) that Cristobal Colon had bought its Zona 1 station.

Its Facebook page, read on 25 September 2026, shows no timetable or fare, and guatemala.com’s March 2026 guide to Petén buses lists only Fuente del Norte and Cristobal Colon. Treat any Linea Dorada price you are quoted as the seller’s quote. Tips for any overnight: bring a blanket and neck pillow — the AC runs cold. Earplugs and an eye mask help for sleeping. Keep valuables in your lap bag, not in overhead storage.

Budget Option: Fuente del Norte

Fuente del Norte is the workhorse bus company for this route, offering the most departures at the lowest prices.

Terminal: 17 Calle 8-46, Zona 1, Guatemala City.

Schedule: the operator publishes no timetable; its booking engine returns a departure board per travel date. For 20 September 2026 it showed six buses from Guatemala City — 5:45 AM, 12:00 PM (two separate buses), 3:00 PM, 9:00 PM and 10:00 PM — and the same-day board on 12 September 2026 showed 12:00 PM, 9:00 PM and 10:30 PM. Check your own date.

Classes and prices:

• Class A: Q262.50 per person (also on 3 October 2026, for travel on 10 October)
• Class B: Q315-420 depending on departure time

Service: Standard coach buses with reclining seats, AC, and onboard bathroom.

Online booking: Available at transportesfuentedelnorte.com.

Cristobal Colon

Another solid option for Flores; Cristobal Colon runs from its own terminal in Zona 1.

Terminal: 7ma Avenida 19-44, Zona 1, Guatemala City.

Schedule: Monday-Friday at 8:15 PM, 9:00 PM, 9:30 PM. Weekends at 8:15 PM and 9:00 PM.

Classes:

• First Category: Q269 per person
• Diamond Category: Q346 per person

Booking: Online or at the terminal. Purchase tickets at least 15 minutes before departure.

From Flores to Tikal

Once you arrive in Flores/Santa Elena, you still need to get to Tikal — about 63 km north, roughly an hour by road. Shared shuttles leave from the “Yo amo Petén” letters at the entrance to Flores. Adrenalina Tours publishes daily departures at 06:00, 07:45, 10:00 and 12:00 with a 15:15 return, at US$15 one way / US$20 round trip; Marvelus lists Transportes Turísticos Alvarado at US$20, Guatemala Transport Service quotes Reino Kan at US$30, and GetYourGuide’s one-way shared transfer lists at US$39 (all retrieved 12 September 2026). Adrenalina’s transport-only timetable starts at 06:00; its separate Tikal + Yaxhá tour lists 04:30 hotel pickup and arrival at Tikal around 06:15, after the sunrise window. Tips for This Route

• Book ahead during holidays. Seats sell out during Semana Santa and Christmas week on every operator.
• Night buses: Fuente del Norte publishes two certified drivers on its Clase Oro and Gran Lujo services. The UK Foreign Office says private intercity coach services are generally safer but gangs have also targeted them, even on main roads; see our night bus guide.
• Return buses from Flores: check the return board separately. Fuente del Norte’s captured boards for late October and November have different departure times in each direction; do not assume the outbound timetable applies. Book at the Flores/Santa Elena terminal.
• Combine with Belize: Fuente del Norte sells Guatemala City to Melchor de Mencos at the Belize border directly — its booking engine returned two departures a day on every date we re-read on 12 September 2026: one at around 5:30-6:00 p.m. at Q283.50, and an 8:00 p.m. at Q283.50 Clase A / Q346.50 Clase B. Confirm the clock time for your own date.
