SAT (Superintendencia de Administración Tributaria) is Guatemala’s tax authority — equivalent to the US IRS. It runs all national taxes (IVA/VAT 12%, ISR income tax, ISO solidarity tax, import duties) and the FEL electronic invoicing system. To do anything tax-related (get a NIT, file IVA, pay taxes, issue FEL invoices, register a vehicle, import goods) you use one of the three official portals above.
Quick rule: Looking up something public? → SAT Portal. Paying a tax? → Declaraguate. Doing anything else with your account? → Agencia Virtual.
Whichever portal you use, save yourself round-trips:

What NOT to do on the SAT portal
Don’t use third-party apps claiming to be SAT — SAT has no official app, all are fraudulent
Don’t wait until the last day — servers crash on the 14th-15th and March 31
Don’t share your SAT password — not even with accountants until you sign formal authorization
Don’t use VPN when paying — some banks block VPN connections for security
Don’t ignore SAT emails — fines and interest accumulate automatically
SAT (Superintendencia de Administración Tributaria) is Guatemala’s tax authority — equivalent to the IRS in the United States. It administers all national taxes including IVA (VAT, 12%), ISR (income tax), ISO (solidarity tax), import duties, and the FEL electronic invoicing system. Every business and many individuals interact with SAT through three online portals: portal.sat.gob.gt (public), agenciaVirtual.sat.gob.gt (your account), and declaraguate.sat.gob.gt (tax payments).
What is the official SAT Guatemala website?
The main official portal is portal.sat.gob.gt. From there you access three key tools: Agencia Virtual SAT (agenciaVirtual.sat.gob.gt) for your personal/business account, Declaraguate (declaraguate.sat.gob.gt) for paying taxes, and public NIT/RTU lookups without login. SAT does NOT have an official mobile app — be cautious of any apps in Play Store or App Store claiming to be SAT, they are unofficial.
Do I need to register with SAT if I'm a foreigner doing business in Guatemala?
Yes, if you generate income in Guatemala you typically need a NIT (tax ID) and inscription in the RTU (Registro Tributario Unificado). The process is free. Foreigners can use their passport and residency document. Common cases: starting a business, buying property, working as a contractor, opening a Guatemalan bank account. See our guide on how to get a NIT for the full process.
Can I use SAT services from the United States?
Yes. The SAT portals (portal.sat.gob.gt, Agencia Virtual, Declaraguate) work from any country. This is how the Guatemalan diaspora maintains active tax obligations while living abroad. To pay taxes generated in Declaraguate from the US, you need either an active Guatemalan bank account or family in Guatemala who can pay the boleta (payment slip) at a local bank using the reference number.
How much does it cost to register with SAT?
Registering for the RTU and getting your NIT is FREE (Q0) when you do it yourself online or in person. SAT does not charge for basic registration. Some certifications cost: Solvencia Fiscal Q15, Constancia de Inscripción Q5, special certifications Q15-50. The taxes themselves (IVA, ISR) are not SAT fees — they are the tributes you owe based on your activity.
What's the SAT phone number for support?
The official support number is 1550 (free from within Guatemala) or +502 2329-7070 from abroad. They answer Monday to Friday 8 AM - 6 PM Guatemala time. For technical portal issues, mention the browser and specific error. For complex tax matters (audits, large fines), in-person at a regional SAT office is more effective than phone.
What if the SAT portal is down?
SAT servers get overloaded on the 14th-15th of each month (IVA deadline) and March 31 (annual ISR deadline). If you hit a downtime: (1) try unusual hours like 4-6 AM or 10-11 PM, (2) clear browser cache, (3) if urgent, generate the boleta when you can and pay in person at a bank — the bank’s date counts. Call 1550 if the system has been down for over an hour.
