Methodology disclosure

Each tool page has a “How this works” section with:

  • Data source (URL / agency name)
  • Last update timestamp
  • Known limitations (what it doesn’t account for)
  • Sample calculations (so you can verify the math)

This isn’t standard for travel/expat sites — most use scraped or stale data with no methodology link. We publish methodology because (a) it’s verifiable, (b) it builds trust, (c) it matters for E-E-A-T signals.

What’s NOT here

  • Real estate listing search (use Encuentra24, our /real-estate/ hub links to it)
  • Flight search engine (we publish current GUA prices via /flights/)
  • Tour booking engine (we link to Viator/GetYourGuide on event pages with affiliate disclosure)
  • AI chatbot for “ask me anything Guatemala” (intentionally — we want sourced data, not generated guesses)

Frequently Asked Questions

Where do these tools get their data?

Each tool’s data source is published openly. Currency converter pulls from Banguat (Banco de Guatemala) reference rate, scraped daily. Cost of living calculator uses our 5-city verified rent + grocery + transport dataset, refreshed monthly against listings + market visits. Vehicle import calculator uses current SAT customs duty (DAI 20%) + IVA (12%) rates from SAT.gob.gt. Visa guide is updated when Migración announces policy changes. The full data file behind each tool is linked from its page.

How accurate is the cost of living calculator?

Within ±10% for the major variables (rent, groceries, transport) when used for the 5 cities we cover (Antigua, Guatemala City, Lake Atitlán, Quetzaltenango, Cobán). Less accurate for niche cities or unusual lifestyles (vegan + remote-work + 100% imported groceries scenarios). The output flags low-confidence estimates.

Why use these vs Numbeo or other comparison sites?

Numbeo aggregates user submissions with no methodology disclosure — averages can be 30-50% off because they include outliers (one expensive expat in Antigua skews the data). Our calculator uses a fixed methodology (verified rentals + supermarket prices in specific months + actual transport costs) and shows the spread. Numbeo is free; ours is too. Comparison tables on each tool’s page show the gap.

Are the tools mobile-friendly?

Yes — all built mobile-first since 70% of our traffic is mobile. The cost calculator and currency converter work without JavaScript for basic conversions; richer features need JS enabled.

Can I see the methodology behind each tool?

Yes. Each tool page has a ‘How this works’ section with the data source, update cadence, and known limitations. The currency converter cites Banguat’s official reference URL. The vehicle import calculator cites the SAT customs schedule. Cost of living publishes the verified-prices methodology.
