What currencies are tracked against the Guatemalan quetzal?

Where do these rates come from?

USD/Q comes directly from the Banco de Guatemala (Banguat) reference rate, published every business day at 9 AM local time. Other currency rates are calculated as USD/Q multiplied by the international cross-rate (e.g., EUR/Q = USD/Q x EUR/USD).

Why does Banguat only publish a USD reference rate?

More than 95% of Guatemala's foreign trade and remittances flow through US dollars. The quetzal trades almost exclusively against USD in the Guatemalan banking system, so other currencies use USD as a bridge currency.

All foreign currencies must ultimately convert to quetzales. The 'best value' depends on your home currency's strength against USD. In May 2026, GBP buys the most quetzales per unit (Q9.69), but Wise transfers in your native currency typically beat any cash exchange option.
