Flores and Belize City are about six hours apart, and a through-bus, a minivan and a do-it-yourself chain compete for the same passenger. The real decision is not which is cheapest — it is whether you make the morning departure at all.

Quick summary

  • Everything through leaves once, around 06:00. Fuente del Norte’s engine returned a single 6:00 am departure; Adrenalina lists 06:00; CheckMyBus showed 5:50 and 6:00 am; Gekko Trails 6:00 and 7:00 AM. Miss it and the only published same-day option is the DIY chain.
  • The carrier quotes in quetzales, everyone else in dollars. Q157.50 direct from Fuente del Norte; US$26 to US$35 from resellers and shuttles — different sellers, different currencies, not one fare converted.
  • Through-services drop you at the water taxi terminal, which is what makes a same-day connection to the cayes realistic.
  • The DIY chain roughly halves the money (a published US$13 to US$20 in total) and costs two to three extra hours.
  • No government source was reachable for any border figure here. Every fee below is attributed to a travel operator or guide, and labelled as such.

Two caveats the table cannot carry. Fuente del Norte publishes no Belize fare table and no Belize schedule on its site: the Q157.50 exists only as a live booking-engine quote for one date, as presented here and on our Fuente del Norte fares and stations page. And although the carrier’s Belize address and the Marlin Espadas office are both described as being at the water taxi terminal, no source states any relationship between them — treat them as separate products.

Step by step: the Fuente del Norte through-bus

  1. Buy on the carrier’s own booking flow, where Belice City sits under the Internacional group in the station picker, alongside “Santa Elena, Flores, Peten” under Petén.
  2. Board at the Santa Elena station, published address “MERCADO NUEVO SANTA ELENA, ZONA 2”. Marvelus, reselling the same bus, describes the pickup instead as the “YO AMO PETEN LETTERS”.
  3. The 6:00 am departure was returned as “Clase Oro GL Plus” with 50 seats free; the reverse leg out of Belize City runs at 12:00 pm at the same Q157.50 quote.
  4. Confirm before you travel: the carrier publishes a PBX and WhatsApp number, 37637025, and one route guide advises confirming the time and pickup point the day before.

Coming up from the capital first? Overnight options into Santa Elena are on our Guatemala City to Flores and Tikal page, the wider operator landscape on the Guatemala intercity bus fares page.

Step by step: the shared shuttles

Adrenalina Tours publishes the fullest set of conditions on this route, and they apply in spirit to any shuttle here:

  • Pickup is in front of the “I LOVE PETEN” letters at the entrance of Flores — not door-to-door; hotel pickup inside Flores has been restricted since a 2019 mayoral rule.
  • Shuttles “need to be reserved 48 hours” ahead, and “Tickets are nonrefundable and can NOT be changed from date or destination”.
  • You must supply full name, passport number, nationality, date of birth and gender at booking.
  • “Collective shuttles are NOT punctual, you need to be 15 minutes before ready.”

The same page prices other Belize destinations out of Flores at 06:00: San Ignacio US$30 (Yellow Belly Backpackers), Belmopan US$30 over five hours (Hotel Green Monkey to the Belmopan bus station), Caye Caulker US$55 over 7.5 hours. From a Tikal hotel it is US$45, minimum two people.

Step by step: the DIY chain

  1. Santa Elena bus terminal to Melchor de Mencos by colectivo: “every 15 to 30 minutes”, around two hours, approximately Q40.
  2. Cross the border on foot. Fuente del Norte’s Melchor station is on “CALLE PRINCIPAL BARRIO FALLABON”, but the carrier does not sell Flores to Melchor as a bookable leg: on the dates we queried, that pair returned no departures. The border town is a through-stop, not a segment you can buy.
  3. Melchor to Benque Viejo del Carmen: walk three kilometres or take a taxi.
  4. Benque Viejo to Belize City on Belizean local buses, “roughly every 30 minutes”, 2.5 to 3 hours, BZ$9 to BZ$10.

Budget “6 to 8 hours for the complete journey once waiting and border-crossing time are included” and “US$13 to US$20 in total, depending on whether you walk or use taxis”.

The border at Melchor de Mencos

Read this section knowing what it is. Belize Immigration, Guatemala’s IGM, INGUAT and travelbelize.org all returned HTTP 403 to four separate request methods on 12 September 2026. Nothing below comes from a government source — it comes from a booking company’s border guide and a travel blog, and should be confirmed at the window. The full procedure, money-changers and touts are on our Melchor de Mencos border crossing page; what follows is only what changes your transport decision.

  • Leaving Guatemala: “There is no exit fee to leave Guatemala. Just present your passport to get stamped, and you can walk across the no man’s land between the countries” (Bookaway).
  • Entering Belize: “There is currently no entry fee required to enter Belize or Guatemala” (Bookaway).
  • Leaving Belize later: two independent non-government sources agree on BZ$40, about US$20, collected at the departure hall and covering border, conservation and development sub-fees. It is not charged on this leg — it hits you on the way back out, on top of every option above.
  • Hours: immigration on the Guatemalan side is published as 6 am to 10 pm daily (Bookaway). For the Belize side at Benque Viejo del Carmen we print no single figure: no government page was readable, and the non-government sources contradict each other — both readings are set out side by side on our Melchor de Mencos border page.

Passengers clear customs and immigration on both sides, which is why shuttle operators collect passport details in advance. What the crossing does to your Guatemalan immigration status is a separate question from transport — read the CA-4 border run guide before planning a re-entry around it.

Onward from Belize City

The most useful fact about this route is where it ends. Fuente del Norte gives its Belize City address as “111 North Front Street Ciudad de Belice, Belice en la Terminal Marítima de Belice” — Spanish as published, meaning at the Belize marine terminal, the water taxi dock. Adrenalina drops at the “Water taxis terminal”; Marvelus and CheckMyBus name the “San Pedro Belize Express Water Taxi Bus Stop”.

So a 06:00 departure arriving between 11:00 am and 12:00 pm puts you at the boats, not at a bus station across town. Adrenalina also sells Flores straight through to Caye Caulker, 7.5 hours at US$55.

Coming back, Fuente del Norte’s engine returned a 12:00 pm Belize City to Santa Elena departure at the same Q157.50 quote, and GetYourGuide lists a shared transfer from USD 25 picking up at “the Office of Marlín Espadas at the Water Taxi Terminal, in Belize at 12:00 pm” and dropping at the entrance of Flores, at the “Yo amo Peten” sign, around 6:30 pm. Marvelus prices the reverse Fuente del Norte seat at US$27, the same as its Mayan World and Marlin Espadas shuttles.

Every figure here was read at its seller’s own page or booking engine on 12 September 2026. Booking-engine quotes are per-date, not a fixed tariff — re-check yours before you travel.
