Chichicastenango hosts the largest indigenous market in Central America — and it runs Thursday and Sunday only. Every scheduled tourist shuttle is built around those two days. Get the day wrong and there is no market and no shuttle.
That single constraint drives the whole trip. Below are the published departure times and fares.

That last option exists for a reason: it puts you in town the evening before so you can be at the market early, when the Mayan ceremonies on the church steps and the produce trading happen — before the tour groups arrive mid-morning.

Correction, 12 September 2026: this page previously said the operator published no simple Panajachel round trip. It does — Guatemala Transportation lists “Shuttle Thu and Sunday ROUND TRIP – Panajachel – Chichicastenango Market Day, – 08:00am then at 2:00pm back to Panajachel USD$30 p/p” on its own schedule page, read that day. Atitrans sells the same 08:00/14:00 round trip “from $30.00”, picking up at hotels in central Panajachel or the Muelle de Tzanjuyú and publishing a journey of 1.5 hours each way.
Two things worth doing the arithmetic on: the onward services cost barely more than the round trip (USD$35 to Antigua against USD$30 back to Panajachel), so if Antigua is your next stop anyway the market costs about USD$5 rather than a backtrack; and buying the halves separately — Atitrans one way at USD$15 plus the USD$20 return leg — comes to USD$35, more than the USD$30 round trip.
Paying: USD or quetzales?
The operator states its fares in dollars and converts at its own rate:
“ALL prices are in USD$ (for reference), USD$1 = Q8 Quetzales – Service by Reservation with Partial/Complete Payment Only.”
The Banco de Guatemala reference rate on 22 July 2026 was Q7.62466 per US dollar. Paying cash in quetzales at the operator’s Q8 rate therefore costs about 5% more than the market rate — on a USD$40 round trip that is roughly Q15 extra. Small, but if you are paying in cash it is worth knowing which currency you are quoted in.
Note also that this operator requires reservation with partial or full payment in advance.
Planning the day
- Check the day before anything else. Thursday and Sunday. Everything else follows from that.
- Go early. The 05:30 airport departure and 07:00 Antigua departure exist because the market is at its most authentic early. By late morning the aisles nearest the church are mostly tour groups.
- Chichi works well as a hop, not just a round trip. The USD$35 Antigua→Chichi→Panajachel and USD$55 GUA→Chichi→Panajachel services let you fold the market into a move to Lake Atitlán rather than backtracking. If you are heading to the lake anyway, this is the efficient routing.
