Deguate’s municipal profile gives Tuesday and Friday as the plaza days, with smaller trade the rest of the week; INGUAT’s visitor guide says go in the morning and allow 2 to 3 hours. The town also has a family pool complex, Villa Alicia (Q10 entry in 2024), and pairs with Zunil and the Fuentes Georginas hot springs.

Which day to go
Tuesday or Friday. Deguate’s profile of the municipality says the town’s municipal market has its own building, that the plaza days are Tuesday and Friday every week, and that vegetables are also traded on the other days, in smaller quantities. It adds that the traders who sell to the rest of the country and the exporters travel on Thursdays and Fridays.
That profile is from 2016 and rests on SEGEPLAN’s 2009 municipal plan. We looked for a newer schedule on 25 September 2026: INGUAT’s guide (September 2026) describes the market but gives no days or hours, and we found no page from the municipality. Blogs and review sites give other day combinations without a source; we have not used them. If you can only go once, a Tuesday or Friday morning is the choice the dated source supports.
A Spanish travel blog, El Rincón de Sele (post dated December 2020), describes an open-air food market every day, every morning and very early, in front of the municipal building, with vendors mostly in traditional dress — consistent with Deguate’s point that trade happens on the other days too.
What you see
- Vegetables in bulk. Deguate lists cabbage, cauliflower, lettuce, beetroot, potatoes, radish, chard and broccoli as the town’s crops, grown intensively with small-scale irrigation and, in some cases, up to three harvests a year. (The 2020 blog says four harvests a year; the two sources disagree.)
- The trade leaving town. INGUAT’s guide mentions lorries laden with produce and stalls of fresh vegetables. Deguate says Almolonga’s vegetables are sold in the town, in Quetzaltenango, on the south coast, in other departments and abroad, mainly in El Salvador and Chiapas, Mexico. In May 2020 the Asociación de Comerciantes Exportadores de Almolonga told Prensa Libre that Almolonga was the main exporter of vegetables to El Salvador, shipping about 20,000 quintales a week and 10 to 15 trucks a day before the pandemic cut those numbers.
- The fields. INGUAT suggests walking out of the centre to see the hillside plots, and adding a viewpoint over the valley to round off the visit.
INGUAT’s own framing is worth taking literally: this is not a sightseeing stop with monuments, it is a working farm town and market. If you want landmarks, INGUAT suggests other stops in the region.

INGUAT’s suggested order: the market and centre first, then the farmland, then a viewpoint. Its example itinerary is a morning in Almolonga and the afternoon in Xela. If you travel without a car, it suggests settling your return transport before you start.
Clothing (INGUAT): light walking clothes, a light jacket for the altitude, non-slip shoes, a hat for the sun and a light rain jacket in changeable weather. INGUAT notes that the temperature varies with the time of day and that rainy periods bring more unsettled afternoons; on a rainy day, it says, the morning gives you more time before the sky clouds over.
The Villa Alicia pools
Deguate lists the hot springs and the pools of Villa Alicia among Almolonga’s main attractions, next to the market days. Guatemala.com’s August 2024 profile of Villa Alicia:

INGUAT suggests combining Almolonga with Zunil, or with viewpoints and volcanic landscapes around Quetzaltenango such as Cerro Quemado and the Santiaguito volcano, and warns against turning the day into a rushed tour.
