Chichicastenango’s market runs on Thursday and Sunday, and from Guatemala City there is one published way to be there for it: a 05:30 shuttle that picks up in the capital or at the airport and goes via Antigua. Two agencies sell it, at USD$38 and USD$43 one way. What changes between them is what happens at 14:00, when the market shuttles leave Chichicastenango: back to the capital, back to Antigua, or on to Lake Atitlán. Round trip: one ticket or two? If you are coming back to the capital the same day, the arithmetic depends on the operator:

  • AtitlanTour: one way out USD$38 + the 14:00 Chichicastenango to Guatemala City leg USD$33 = USD$71, against USD$70 for its combined ticket. The combined ticket is a dollar cheaper and includes the stop in Antigua.
  • Guatemala Transportation: one way out USD$43 + its 14:00 return leg to Guatemala City USD$40 = USD$83. It publishes no combined back-to-the-capital ticket; its USD$57 combo ends in Antigua.

The Panajachel combo is the cheapest published market-plus-onward ticket from the capital. At USD$52-55 it costs less than the day trip back to the capital, and it drops you at Lake Atitlán. Paying. Guatemala Transportation quotes in dollars at its own rate of Q8 per dollar, AtitlanTour at Q7.8 (Q8 in its booking form); both say reservation payments are not refundable. On a trip that runs two days a week, booking the wrong day costs you the fare.

Timing: the 05:30 start and the 14:00 return

Neither operator publishes a journey time for the capital-to-Chichicastenango run, so we do not put an arrival time on the 05:30 departure. What is published:

  • AtitlanTour: Chichicastenango to Antigua takes 2.5 hours. Both capital shuttles pass through Antigua in each direction.
  • 14:00 is the only published return from Chichicastenango on market days, with every operator.
  • The AtitlanTour day trip adds 1.5 hours of free time in Antigua on the way back, so you reach the capital in the evening rather than the afternoon.

Arriving on a flight

The 05:30 departure is listed from “Guatemala City/Airport”, but it is not timed for arrivals. For most visitors landing at GUA, the practical sequence is a night in Antigua, then the Antigua shuttle to the market: see our Antigua to Chichicastenango guide for its departures and fares.

The market days are Thursday and Sunday, per visitcentroamerica.com. The same page lists INGUAT’s tourist-information office in Chichicastenango at 7.ª avenida 07-14 (tel. +502 3128-6908), open Thursdays and Sundays, 06:00-18:00 — those are the office’s hours, not the market’s.
