Panajachel to Chichicastenango Shuttle: Times & Fares

The market at Chichicastenango runs Thursday and Sunday, and from Panajachel every scheduled shuttle is gated to those two days — with exactly one exception, which exists to put you in town the night before. Two operators published seven separate products on this pair on 12 September 2026. All of them are below.

Market-day timing: why 08:00 and 14:00 decide the day

Both operators sell the same shape of trip. You leave Panajachel at 08:00 and the only published return leaves Chichicastenango at 14:00. On Atitrans’ published 1.5 hours each way, that 08:00 departure puts you in town around 09:30, which leaves roughly four and a half hours at the market before the return. Guatemala Transportation publishes no journey time, so its arrival time is not a published figure.

14:00 is the only published return of the day. Neither operator publishes a later departure, a standby option, or what happens if you miss it. On a service that runs two days a week, that is the constraint to plan against.

Atitrans describes the destination in its own copy as a town of about 23,000 people in the Western Highlands at 2,030 m, renowned for the Thursday and Sunday markets.

The night-before option

The one departure in either schedule that is not on a market day is Guatemala Transportation’s Wednesday and Saturday 16:00 run from Panajachel, USD$28 per person one way, minimum 3 passengers. That minimum is the catch: for a couple or a solo traveller it is not a seat you can simply book. Nothing else is published with it — no accommodation, no return, no onward connection.

The published products

Fares are per person and quoted by both operators in US dollars. Read 12 September 2026.

One piece of arithmetic worth doing before you book: buying the two halves separately costs more than the round trip. Atitrans’ $15.00 one way plus Guatemala Transportation’s USD$20 return leg is USD$35, against USD$30 for a single round trip. The separate legs only make sense if you are not coming back to Panajachel at all. Note too that Atitrans prices its round trip as a from-price of $30.00 — not a fixed fare.

Onward options: turn the market into a move

This is the strongest reason to start from Panajachel rather than from Antigua. The round trip back to Panajachel is USD$30; the same 08:00 departure continuing from Chichicastenango to Antigua at 14:00 is USD$35. If Antigua is your next stop anyway, the market costs USD$5 more than a return to Panajachel instead of a wasted backtrack. Continuing all the way to Guatemala City and the airport, via Antigua, is USD$55.

If you travelled up on a one way, Guatemala Transportation also publishes three other 14:00 departures out of Chichicastenango: USD$20 to Panajachel, USD$25 to Antigua, and USD$40 to Guatemala City via Antigua, all Thursday and Sunday.

One more listing sits outside the market-day pattern: a 09:20 departure from Chichicastenango to Cobán, Lanquín and Semuc Champey at USD$45, published without a Thursday/Sunday restriction. It is not a connection from the 08:00 Panajachel shuttle — 09:20 falls before that shuttle’s published arrival window — so treat it as an option for travellers already staying in Chichicastenango.

Booking and paying

Guatemala Transportation requires a reservation with partial or complete payment, takes payments through its office between 08:00 and 19:00 (UTC-6), and states that reservation payments are non-refundable. On a service that runs two days a week, booking the wrong day costs you the fare.

The operator quotes in dollars and converts at its own rate of USD$1 = Q8. The Banco de Guatemala reference rate on 12 September 2026 was Q7.62817 per dollar. Paying cash quetzales at the operator’s rate therefore costs about 4.9% more — a USD$30 round trip is Q240 at Q8 against Q228.85 at the reference rate. Atitrans publishes no conversion rate.

What is not published

We do not fill these gaps with estimates:

• Market opening and closing hours. The tourism authority we captured publishes the days only; the INGUAT site returned an HTTP 403 block and no official municipal site was reachable. Figures circulating online could not be traced to a primary source. For anyone arriving by shuttle, the 08:00/14:00 pair is what defines the visiting window in practice.
• Chicken bus (camioneta) fares and timetables. No operator publishes either for this route.
• Taxi tariffs, and Uber coverage in Panajachel or Chichicastenango — neither was captured, so we assert nothing in either direction.
• Road distance. Neither operator publishes one.
• Guatemala Transportation’s pickup address in Panajachel and its drop point in Chichicastenango.
• What happens if you miss the 14:00 return. No published alternative.
