Night Buses in Guatemala: The Overnight Routes Operators Publish, and What the UK Says About Safety [2026]

Guatemala’s night buses are concentrated on a handful of long routes: Guatemala City to and from Flores (for Tikal), to Cobán, to Huehuetenango, and the night shuttles to Lanquín for Semuc Champey. Below are the overnight and late-evening departures we found published by operators and shuttle sellers on 24 September 2026 (plus Fuente del Norte’s own booking engine, read 12 September 2026), and what the UK Foreign Office says about travelling at night and by bus.

Quick summary

• Guatemala City → Flores: Pullmans at 20:00, 21:00 and 22:00, USD$42-45 recliner or USD$58-62 semi-bed through the resellers; 9 hours at night per AtitlanTour.
• Flores → Guatemala City / Antigua / the lake: departures at 19:00 and 21:00.
• Guatemala City → Cobán: Monja Blanca, hourly from 00:00 on five days a week (04:30 is the fifth night departure on Wednesday and Thursday); fares not published.
• Guatemala City → Huehuetenango: Los Halcones, 02:00 Monday to Friday, 6 hours.
• Night shuttles to Lanquín: 23:45 from Guatemala City, 23:00 from Antigua (both USD$50), 20:00 from San Pedro La Laguna.
• Safety: the UK advice lists not travelling at night among its precautions and says to avoid the public buses (the repainted US school buses); it calls private coaches generally safer, not safe.

Published overnight and late-evening departures

The resellers do not name the bus company that runs the Flores Pullmans, except Adrenalina, which calls its Flores to Antigua product an FDN (Fuente del Norte) bus and boards at the FDN station in Santa Elena. When we queried Fuente del Norte’s own booking engine on 12 September 2026 it listed 21:00 and 22:00 departures from Guatemala City to Santa Elena; see Fuente del Norte schedules.

Monja Blanca adds that its timetable can change without notice. Los Halcones asks passengers to arrive 30 minutes before departure.

What the UK Foreign Office says

The UK’s travel advice for Guatemala (safety and security page, read 24 September 2026) is the most specific official text we found on this, and it does not call night travel safe:

• Among its precautions: “not travelling alone or at night, especially near borders or in areas without many people”.
• On the public buses: “Avoid travelling on public buses (repainted US school buses). There have been incidents of attacks and extortion by local gangs on bus drivers resulting in serious injury or death.”
• On coaches: “Private intercity coach services are generally safer, but gangs have also targeted these, even on main roads.”
• On arrival in the capital: “Guatemala Municipality no longer allows some intercity buses to enter the city centre. They drop passengers at various points on the city outskirts.”
• On the road: PROVIAL, the roadside assistance force, can be called on +502 2419 2121 or 1520 and patrols most major roads, “However, patrols are infrequent.”

The same page names bus stations among the places to stay aware of your surroundings, and radio-dispatched taxis, Uber where available and hotel taxis as the safest option for shorter trips within towns.

We found no published incident statistics for individual night routes, from the police or any operator, so this page makes no claim about which route is safer than another.

What the operators publish about their buses

• Fuente del Norte: its Clase Oro description lists two certified professional drivers, air conditioning, a toilet and traveller’s insurance (read 12 September 2026).
• Monja Blanca: both its Especial and Estándar buses list reclining seats, air conditioning, security cameras and traveller’s insurance; Especial adds an onboard toilet and charging ports.
• Adrenalina Tours (Flores night bus): normal and semi-bed seats, sometimes full-bed seats for USD 20 extra.

Arriving in the dark

• Flores: on AtitlanTour’s 9-hour figure, a 21:00 departure from Guatemala City would reach Santa Elena around 06:00.
• Guatemala City: see the UK note above about buses stopping on the outskirts. Monja Blanca’s buses use Centra Norte in zona 17; its zona 1 coaster transfer is only for tickets paid in zona 1. Our bus terminals guide lists where each company stops.
• Antigua: Adrenalina’s Flores night bus includes the private car from Guatemala City to your hotel.

• Incident statistics by route or operator.
• The operator behind the resellers’ Flores Pullmans (except Adrenalina’s FDN).
• Monja Blanca’s fares and arrival times.
• Journey times for 16 of the 27 rows in the table above.
