Flores to Tikal 2026: Shuttles, Times & Park Tickets

You are already in Flores or Santa Elena, so the hard part is behind you: Tikal sits 63 km north — “a tan solo 63 km de la ciudad de Flores, Peten (1 hora)” in the Ministry of Culture and Sports’ own words — and the operators that publish a duration call it a one-hour run.

What catches visitors is that the van seat and the park ticket are two separate purchases from two different parties, and no shuttle fare we read on 12 September 2026 included the entrance.

Quick summary: Shared shuttles from the “Yo amo Peten” letters run US$15-39 for the same one-hour ride, depending on who sells it: Adrenalina Tours US$15 one way / US$20 round trip at 06:00, 07:45, 10:00 and 12:00; an Alvarado minivan from US$20; Reino Kan US$30; GetYourGuide US$39 at 08:00, dropping at “Comedor Tikal”. The park you pay yourself: Q150 foreigner entrance, Q100 more for the amanecer or atardecer slot, plus 2.30 % if you pay the official portal with an international card. No public bus to the gate is published by anybody.

Shuttle, tour or sunrise trip: what each one actually buys

The cheapest and the most expensive seat differ by more than 2.5x for the same hour of road, so who you book with matters more than which mode you pick — and the US$20 guided tour costs the same as a bare minivan seat from another seller.

Adrenalina’s own page warns that not all of its collective-shuttle information is accurate and asks travellers to confirm by WhatsApp or email before booking, so treat every departure time here as one to confirm.

The park tickets you still pay

Official fees, published by MCD and shown live on the government ticket portal on 12 September 2026 (English labels are our translation of MCD’s Spanish).

Four rules attach to that table, all from the portal itself:

• The park ticket is the prerequisite for everything else — sunrise, sunset, camping, museums and Uaxactun all require buying the park entrance ticket first.
• International cards pay more: “se aplicara un recargo adicional del 2.30 % sobre el precio de cada boleto” — 2.30 % on each ticket, not once per order.
• Buy the ticket matching your nationality. A foreigner who buys a Guatemalan-citizen ticket will not be allowed in.
• Children under 10 enter free and need no park ticket.

Where you buy it: online at the official portal, or in person. The consumer-news site guatemala.com — not the ministry, so treat it as reporting, not instruction — says the Banrural arrangement ended and tickets are now sold only at Banco de los Trabajadores (Bantrab) branches, naming Guatemala City, Antigua, Solola, Santa Elena and Melchor de Mencos, with the bank slip serving as the entry ticket. It advises buying early in high season, long weekends and holidays.

The timing that matters

Gate hours are fixed: 06:00 to 18:00, Monday to Sunday, with the amanecer slot 04:00 to 06:00 and the atardecer slot 18:00 to 20:00. Set the published departures against those hours:

• The 06:00 shuttle does not get you in at opening. On the operator’s own one-hour duration it puts you at the gate around 07:00 — still the longest day available on a shared seat.
• No ordinary shuttle reaches the sunrise window. Being inside between 04:00 and 06:00 needs the amanecer ticket and a night departure: GetYourGuide’s sunrise product meets at 2:30 am at “YO AMO PETEN EL PLANCHON”, and it labels the 4:30 am start on its regular guided tour “This is not a sunrise tour”.
• The last published departure is 12:00, arriving around 13:00, against Adrenalina’s only published return at 15:15 — about two hours inside a site people walk all day.
• Wikivoyage, crowd-sourced rather than official, adds that “it can get really hot from 10:00 so make sure to go there early”.

One more warning, from a traveller review on GetYourGuide’s own sunrise listing: there is “a real and relatively high chance (depending on the season) that you will not be able to see a sunrise due to the high humidity in the forest and the dense morning mist”. The Q250 buys the access, not the view.

Pickup and drop points

Pickup is the letters, not your hotel. Every shuttle operator we read uses the “Yo amo Peten” letters at the entrance of Flores island — Adrenalina writes “the letters at the entrance of flores I love Peten”, GetYourGuide’s sunrise product calls the same spot “YO AMO PETEN EL PLANCHON”. Adrenalina explains why: “In 2019 the Mayor of town decided that pick up and drop off between 7 am and 19 pm is not anymore possible in the hotels.” It also asks passengers to be ready 15 minutes early, says plainly that collective shuttles are not punctual, and asks you to call if the van is more than 15 minutes late.

Drop-off is at the park entrance: GetYourGuide specifies “Comedor Tikal at the entrance of the park”, Marvelus simply says Tikal National Park.

Sleeping in Santa Elena rather than on the island? Wikivoyage (crowd-sourced) puts the New Bus Station 1.5 km south of the causeway to Flores island, and a tuk-tuk from that station to the island at Q15 per person, a figure its own text stamps “as of 2026”. Its shuttle and bus paragraph on the same page carries an older stamp, December 2024, so read the timetable there with more suspicion than the fare.

What nobody publishes: there is no public bus to the gate

Plainly, because no operator page says it: no public or chicken-bus service from Flores to the Tikal park gate is published by anyone. Every priced option we could source on 12 September 2026 is a tourist shuttle, a tour, a private transfer or a taxi.

The only official wording is MCD’s routing note that “microbuses colectivos y privados estan disponibles diariamente” — collective and private microbuses available daily — with no operator, timetable or fare. The long-haul network does not fill the gap either: Fuente del Norte’s booking engine sells exactly nine stations and Tikal is not among them.
