Where you sleep for Tikal decides one thing above all: whether you can be at the park for the sunrise window without a middle-of-the-night drive. The Ministry of Culture and Sports (MCD) sets that window in its own words: “En horario extraordinario se establece el tour de amanecer de 04:00 a 06:00 horas” (the extraordinary-hours sunrise tour runs 04:00 to 06:00). The Ministry also puts the park “a tan solo 63 km de la ciudad de Flores, Petén (1 hora)”. This page compares three bases: inside the park, El Remate and Flores. It uses only what the official rules and each lodge’s own website say. It has no hotel rankings and no room rates. None of the lodge pages we read on 15 and 16 October 2026 showed a dated room rate.

Quick summary:

  • Sunrise window: 04:00–06:00. Sunset window: 18:00–20:00. Regular hours are 06:00–18:00, Monday to Sunday (MCD).
  • From Flores: 63 km, 1 hora (MCD). To arrive by 04:00, that figure means leaving Flores by 03:00.
  • Inside the park: three lodges found by name. Each says it is a 10–15 minute walk from the plaza or temples (each hotel’s own claim).
  • Staying inside does not change the rules: the MCD ticket FAQ says sunrise and sunset need the tour ticket, the general park ticket and an INGUAT-authorized guide you hire yourself.
  • Tickets are per day: the MCD FAQ says a ticket is valid only for the day it is validated. Two days of ruins means two park tickets.
  • Fees (foreigners / nationals, MCD, undated on page): entry Q150 / Q25. Sunrise or sunset add-on Q100 / Q20. Park camping area Q50 / Q10.
  • Cash: in-person ticket purchases at BANTRAB are cash only (MCD). Jungle Lodge says everything outside the hotel is cash.

For the full ticket mechanics (portal, payment, nationality rules), see our Tikal park access and tickets guide. For the sunrise tour itself, see the Tikal sunrise tour page.

The sunset window works the same way in reverse. It closes at 20:00, per the MCD. At the Ministry’s 1-hour figure, a Flores-based visitor gets back to Flores around 21:00.

What the official rules allow

These rules come from the Ministry of Culture and Sports, not from any lodge. They apply wherever you sleep.

Guide. The MCD ticket FAQ lists three things you must have for the sunrise or sunset tour: the tour’s specific ticket, the general park entry and an authorized guide. It adds that “El servicio de guía es obligatorio y no es proporcionado por esta plataforma” (the guide service is obligatory and the ticket platform does not provide it). You hire the guide yourself, at the park entrance or through an authorized tour operator. The FAQ says the guide must be authorized and identified by INGUAT (Instituto Guatemalteco de Turismo). A bed inside the park does not change any of this.

Tickets are for one day. The MCD FAQ says you can buy tickets up to 30 days before you use them, whatever date is printed on them. It also says “Los boletos son válidos únicamente para el día en que se presentan y se validan” (tickets are valid only for the day they are presented and validated). It adds that “Un boleto validado no puede utilizarse en una fecha distinta” (a validated ticket cannot be used on a different date). At the foreigner rates above, two days of ruins plus one sunrise is Q150 + Q150 + Q100 = Q400.

Buy for your nationality. The ticket portal home page warns: “No se te permitirá la entrada al parque si siendo extranjero, compras entradas para ciudadanos guatemaltecos” (a foreigner who buys tickets for Guatemalan citizens will not be let into the park).

Where to buy in person. The MCD FAQ names two places: the BANTRAB bank agency at the park’s first entrance, or any BANTRAB agency in the country. It says in-person purchases are cash only.

Night movement. The MCD Tikal page and ticket portal list only two extraordinary windows: 04:00–06:00 and 18:00–20:00. We could not capture CONAP’s own park rules on overnight stays or night movement inside the park, because its site returned 403 three times. If a lodge offers anything outside those windows, ask the lodge and your guide which rule permits it before you pay.

Inside the park: what each lodge says about itself

We found three lodges inside Tikal National Park by name. We have no official list, so there may be others. Every fact below comes only from that lodge’s own website and is the hotel’s statement. They are listed alphabetically; the order is not a ranking. We could not reach the INGUAT hotel registry (Cloudflare challenge and 403), so this page cannot say which lodges are INGUAT-registered.

Jaguar Inn Tikal

Jaguar Inn says it has served guests since 1969. It says it is “ubicado dentro del parque nacional Tikal, 15 minutos a pie de los templos” (inside the national park, 15 minutes on foot from the temples). It lists 13 bungalows, fully equipped tents for rent, a camping space, restaurant service and a travel agency. It describes itself as an eco-lodge “powered entirely by solar energy, provides 24-hour electricity”, and it mentions wifi. Its camping page lists $15 USD per person for travellers arriving with a camper, RV or their own tent. We captured no price for renting one of the hotel’s tents. The camping rate is undated. The page does not say whether it includes the park’s own Q50 camping-area fee.

Jungle Lodge

Jungle Lodge says it is “located inside the Tikal National Park, 10 minutes walk from the central square”. It calls itself “the first archaeological campsite of Tikal” and lists 49 rooms and suites. Its FAQ says that under park norms “we can only run our power generators on certain schedules”. Power from 10 pm to 6 a.m. covers a ceiling fan, night light and power outlet. The hotel says ceiling fans run 24 hours, thanks to an energy storage system, in four room types: standard, premium, Junior suite and hostel.

On payment, Jungle Lodge says you can pay by credit card inside the hotel, but “outside the hotel, all services, foods and drinks must be paid in cash”. It says it cannot allow pets because the park forbids animals in the reserve. Check-in is 15:00 and check-out is 11:00. It lists a collective shuttle from Mundo Maya International Airport. The fare is US$19 one way and $28 round trip per person, and the hotel says schedules are subject to changes.

Jungle Lodge also publishes its own ticket rules. These are the hotel’s statements, not published park rules:

  • The hotel says park authorities require “at least one entry ticket to be able to enter the hotel area” at the entrance gate. It puts that gate 17 km from the visitor’s center (the hotel’s figure).
  • The hotel says a guest who stays at the hotel without visiting the archaeological site does not need a ticket for that day. It also says you need a day ticket for each day you visit the site.

We could not confirm either rule, or the 17 km figure, from an official source. Ask the hotel how your arrival-day ticket works before you book.

Hotel Tikal Inn

Tikal Inn says it sits on the edge of the jungle, “only a ten minute walk from the center of the Mayan Ruins (Plaza Mayor)”. Check-in is from 14:00 and check-out is until 12:00. Its site lists a collective shuttle to Tikal from Flores hotels, the airport and bus stations, with no fare in our capture. It lists a Sunrise Tour at USD25.00 (undated), running 4–8 a.m. in English or Spanish. The tour page notes that “entry tickets are not included, must be bought on entry to the ruins”. For foreigners, the tour price therefore comes on top of the MCD’s Q150 park ticket and Q100 sunrise add-on.

El Remate

The MCD route from Flores runs along the CA-13 toward Melchor de Mencos. At Aldea Ixlú you take the left turn toward El Remate and follow that road to the park entrance. On that description, El Remate sits on the way to Tikal. We could not capture an official distance or drive time from El Remate to the park, so we give none. On transport, the Ministry says only “Microbuses colectivos y privados están disponibles diariamente” (shared and private microbuses run daily). It gives no times or fares. Our Flores to Tikal transport page covers the shuttle options. See also our Biotopo Cerro Cahuí page.

Flores

Flores is the base with an official distance attached: 63 km and 1 hora, per the MCD. That makes the sunrise arithmetic simple. At the Ministry’s figure, reaching the park at 04:00 means leaving by 03:00. A regular 06:00–18:00 visit needs no pre-dawn start. For getting to Flores itself, see Guatemala City to Flores and Tikal and Flores airport to Tikal. If you are driving, see driving to Tikal. For evenings in town, see things to do in Flores.

Step by step: choosing your base

  1. Decide whether you want the sunrise or sunset window. If you do not, the regular 06:00–18:00 hours (MCD) work from any base.
  2. Count your ruin days. Each day you enter needs its own park ticket, because the MCD FAQ says a ticket is valid only for the day it is validated. Add one sunrise or sunset add-on for each extraordinary visit.
  3. Arrange an INGUAT-authorized guide for any sunrise or sunset visit. The MCD FAQ makes the guide obligatory, and the ticket platform does not supply one.
  4. Buy tickets for your nationality. The portal says a foreigner who buys tickets for Guatemalan citizens will not be let into the park.
  5. If you will sleep inside the park, ask the lodge in writing how your arrival-day ticket works and what its tour price includes. Tikal Inn says its sunrise tour does not include entry tickets.
  6. Bring quetzales in cash. In-person ticket sales at BANTRAB are cash only (MCD), and Jungle Lodge says everything outside the hotel is cash.
  7. Get a written room quote. This page prints no room rates because none of the captured lodge pages showed a dated one.

The Guatemala-specific details

  • Two-tier pricing by nationality. The MCD charges foreigners Q150 for park entry and nationals Q25. The sunrise or sunset add-on is Q100 for foreigners and Q20 for nationals. The ticket portal says a foreigner who buys tickets for Guatemalan citizens will not be allowed into the park.
  • INGUAT guides. The guide requirement is tied to Guatemala’s tourism institute: the guide must be authorized and identified by INGUAT (MCD ticket FAQ).
  • BANTRAB and cash. The MCD FAQ names the BANTRAB agency at the park’s first entrance, or any BANTRAB agency nationwide, and says in-person purchases are cash only. Jungle Lodge’s ticket page names other banks and payment terms. The Ministry’s FAQ is the official rule, and this page follows it.
  • Life inside a reserve. Jungle Lodge says park norms restrict its generator hours and that the park forbids animals across the reserve. Jaguar Inn says it runs on solar power.

This page is travel information, not legal advice. Rules and fees change. Confirm your own case directly with the Ministry of Culture and Sports ticket portal and with your lodge before you travel.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it worth staying inside Tikal National Park?

It depends on whether you want the sunrise or sunset windows. The Ministry of Culture and Sports sets the sunrise tour at 04:00 to 06:00 and the sunset tour at 18:00 to 20:00. It puts the park 63 km and 1 hour from Flores. Each of the three in-park lodges we found says it is a 10 to 15 minute walk from the main plaza or the temples. Those are the hotels’ own claims, read 15 to 16 October 2026. Staying inside removes the pre-dawn drive. It does not remove the ticket or guide requirements.

Do I still need a guide for the Tikal sunrise if I stay inside the park?

Yes. The Ministry of Culture and Sports ticket FAQ (read 15 October 2026) says the sunrise or sunset tour requires three things: the specific tour ticket, the general park ticket and an authorized guide. The guide is obligatory and the ticket platform does not provide one. The guide must be authorized and identified by INGUAT. You hire the guide yourself, at the park entrance or through an authorized tour operator. Hotel Tikal Inn’s own sunrise tour page says entry tickets are not included.

How early do I have to leave Flores for the Tikal sunrise?

The sunrise entry window opens at 04:00, per the Ministry of Culture and Sports and its ticket portal. The Ministry puts the park 63 km and 1 hour from Flores. By that figure, you leave Flores no later than 03:00 to reach the park at 04:00. Add your own margin for the shuttle pickup and for meeting your guide.

Do I need a new Tikal ticket for each day if I stay two nights?

By the Ministry of Culture and Sports rules, yes, for each day you enter the ruins. Its ticket FAQ says tickets are valid only for the day on which they are presented and validated. It also says a validated ticket cannot be used on a different date. At the Ministry’s foreigner rates, two days of ruins plus one sunrise is Q150 + Q150 + Q100 = Q400. Jungle Lodge says on its own site that a guest who stays at the hotel and does not visit the site does not need a ticket for that day. That is the hotel’s statement, not a published park rule.

Can I camp at Tikal?

The Ministry of Culture and Sports lists a camping area fee of Q50 for foreigners and Q10 for nationals. The fee is undated on its page, read 15 October 2026. Jaguar Inn Tikal, inside the park, says on its own site that it has fully equipped tents for rent and a camping space. Its camping page lists $15 USD per person for travellers arriving in a camper or RV or with their own tent. That rate is undated on the hotel page. We captured no price for renting one of the hotel’s tents. Neither page says whether the hotel rate includes the park camping fee, so ask the hotel in writing.

Is there electricity and can I pay by card at the Tikal lodges?

It varies by lodge, by their own statements. Jungle Lodge says park norms allow it to run its generators only on certain schedules. It says power is limited from 10 pm to 6 a.m., and that ceiling fans run 24 hours through an energy storage system. Jaguar Inn says it is powered entirely by solar energy with 24-hour electricity. Jungle Lodge says you can pay by credit card inside the hotel, but outside the hotel everything must be paid in cash. Park tickets bought in person at BANTRAB are cash only, per the Ministry of Culture and Sports.

How much does a hotel room near Tikal cost?

We do not print one. None of the three in-park lodge pages we read on 15 and 16 October 2026 showed a dated room rate, and we have no verified rate for El Remate or Flores. The only hotel prices we captured are for services. Jungle Lodge lists its airport shuttle at US$19 one way and $28 round trip per person. Tikal Inn lists a Sunrise Tour at USD25.00. Jaguar Inn lists its camping area at $15 USD per person for guests bringing their own tent, camper or RV. All three prices are undated on the hotels’ pages. Ask each lodge for a written quote.

Is El Remate closer to Tikal than Flores?

The Ministry of Culture and Sports route description puts El Remate on the way. From Flores you take the CA-13 toward Melchor de Mencos and turn left at Aldea Ixlu toward El Remate. You then follow that road to the park entrance. We could not capture an official El Remate to Tikal distance or drive time, because CONAP’s site returned 403 three times. This page gives none.
