San Pedro La Laguna and Xela are linked by the one thing the Panajachel side of the lake does not have: a direct camioneta, the local chicken bus, from San Pedro to Quetzaltenango. The tourist shuttles we could read all start from Panajachel, so from San Pedro the shuttle route is a boat across the lake first. This page sets the two side by side, with every source labelled for what it is.
Quick summary
- Direct bus, San Pedro → Xela: Monday to Saturday mornings at 04:30, 05:00, 05:30, 06:00, 07:00, 08:00 and 11:00, across from the Catholic church at the top of the hill, Q20-30. Source: Wikivoyage, a community guide; no operator publishes it.
- Direct bus, Xela → San Pedro: from the zona 3 terminal at 11:30, 12:00, 13:00, 14:00, 16:00 and 17:30 (Wikivoyage), run by Veloz Pedrana and Transportes Méndez, about 2.5 hours.
- No San Pedro shuttle on any seller we could read; the Xela shuttles leave from Panajachel (USD 25-35).
- Xela → San Pedro door to door: Adrenalina, 08:00, USD 30, but listed out of stock on 3 October 2026.
The direct camioneta
Two community-edited Wikivoyage pages, read on 3 October 2026, are the only sources we found that describe this bus. We quote them as what they are: traveller reports, not a timetable.
| Direction | Departures as reported | Where | Fare as reported | Operators named |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| San Pedro → Xela | 04:30, 05:00, 05:30, 06:00, 07:00, 08:00, 11:00, Monday to Saturday | Across the street from the Catholic church downtown, top of the hill | Q20-30 | Not named |
| Xela → San Pedro | 11:30, 12:00, 13:00, 14:00, 16:00, 17:30 (Quetzaltenango page); “every hour or soo” (San Pedro page) | Bus terminal, zona 3 | Q30 for locals, can be Q50 for foreigners (dated January 2023); the Spanish edition says Q25 | Veloz Pedrana, Transportes Méndez |
Three things to take from that table:
- It is a morning bus from San Pedro. The last departure reported is 11:00, and none is reported for Sundays.
- The fares disagree between the English and Spanish editions of the same guide, and the English one says foreigners can be charged more. Ask the ayudante the fare before you sit down.
- No published timetable that we could find. Neither bus company named has a schedule we could find online; check the departure in San Pedro the afternoon before.
How camionetas work is in our chicken bus guide.
By shuttle: across the lake first
The shuttle sellers we read on 3 October 2026 list Xela departures from Panajachel, not from San Pedro. Adrenalina’s Panajachel hub sells San Pedro departures to Antigua, Chichicastenango, Lanquín and El Paredón, but none to Quetzaltenango, and Guatemala Transportation’s San Pedro section has none either. So the shuttle route is a lancha from San Pedro to Panajachel and then one of these:
| Seller | Leaves Panajachel | Price | Time as published | Condition |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Adrenalina Tours | 09:00 and 15:00, every day | USD 25 | 2.30 hours | Minimum 2; at least one change, at Los Encuentros or Cuatro Caminos |
| Atitrans | Not shown on the listing read | From USD 30 | Not shown | — |
| AtitlanTour | 05:00, Monday to Friday | USD 35 | Not published | — |
| AtitlanTour | 08:00 | USD 30 | Not published | Minimum 3 |
| Guatemala Transportation | 05:00, Monday to Friday | USD 35 | Not published | — |
| Guatemala Transportation | 16:00 | USD 30 | Not published | Minimum 3, not daily, ask in advance |
The full Panajachel picture, including the Flor del Paisaje public bus, is on Panajachel to Xela. The lancha fare and the boat times out of San Pedro are on Lake Atitlán lancha routes. An early-morning shuttle from Panajachel needs a boat that gets you there in time; check the first lancha before booking a 05:00 departure.
The San Pedro Spanish School’s shuttle page. The school publishes a page for a San Pedro La Laguna to Xela shuttle, and one for the reverse. On 3 October 2026 both stayed behind a “Please wait while your request is being verified…” screen on every attempt, so we could not read the price or times, and we do not repeat figures we could not see.
Xela to San Pedro: the way back
- Door to door, if it is running: Adrenalina Tours lists Xela to San Pedro La Laguna at 08:00, USD 30 per person, 2.30 hours, from your hotel or address in Xela to near the dock in San Pedro, with at least one change at Los Encuentros or Cuatro Caminos. On 3 October 2026 the product showed “Out of stock”. It allows one big bag and one handbag, with USD 10 per extra bag, and asks for 48 hours’ notice.
- Shuttle to Panajachel, then the boat: Adrenalina 08:00 and 14:00, USD 25, minimum 2; AtitlanTour 08:00, USD 35, 2.5 hours (Thursday and Sunday at 07:00, minimum 2); Guatemala Transportation 08:00, USD 30, minimum 3, not daily.
- Direct camioneta: from the zona 3 terminal, 11:30 to 17:30 as reported above.
Or walk it
There is also a multi-day trek from Xela to the lake on foot: Xela to Lake Atitlán trek. Coming the other way from Antigua instead, see Antigua to San Pedro La Laguna.
Shuttle prices, times and conditions as published by Adrenalina Tours, Atitrans, AtitlanTour and Guatemala Transportation on their own pages on 3 October 2026. Camioneta times and fares are from Wikivoyage’s San Pedro la Laguna (revision 5360655) and Quetzaltenango (revision 5355439) pages and the Spanish edition’s San Pedro La Laguna page (revision 248111), community-edited guides; none of the operator sites we read prints them.
