Antigua to Guatemala City Airport: When to Leave [2026]

Leaving Antigua for a flight out of La Aurora (GUA) is a different problem from arriving: you are solving for a deadline, and the shuttle you need may have to go before dawn. This page is the arithmetic. The fares live on our Guatemala City airport to Antigua guide, which carries the full published table both ways.

Quick summary

• Published journey time Antigua to Guatemala City: 1.5 hours (Atitrans).
• One Guatemalan carrier publishes its cut-offs. TAG Airlines requires passengers to present themselves 3 hours before international flights and 2 hours before domestic ones, and states that all flights close 45 minutes before departure.
• Those two numbers set the working rule: an international departure means leaving Antigua about 4.5 hours before wheels-up, before any closure margin.
• Two operators publish departures: Atitrans, 7 a day, 04:00 to 19:00, from USD$18; Guatemala Transportation, 8 a day, 03:00 to 23:00, USD$20 pre-dawn and USD$17 for the rest.
• Both drop only in zones 9, 10 and 13, plus the airport.
• Every other airline’s check-in page we tried was blocked the day we researched this, so check your own airline’s cut-off rather than assuming TAG’s applies.

The departure-time worksheet

The arithmetic, using only published numbers:

Flight time − 3 h (international presentation) − 1.5 h (journey) = leave Antigua by. For a domestic flight, substitute 2 hours and the total becomes 3.5 hours.

Read the last two columns together: a private car can leave at the minute in column three, while a shared shuttle goes when the operator says, so you routinely board one to three hours earlier than the arithmetic demands. For the earliest flights the published schedule cannot meet the three-hour target at all.

TAG’s 45-minute close is the hard edge: present after it and you are a no-show. TAG’s contract gives a no-show passenger up to 4 hours to rebook with a USD$100 penalty and says the ticket is lost after 48 hours — one carrier’s policy, not a national rule.

Shuttle departures out of Antigua, and the drop-zone rule

Atitrans publishes seven departures, every day: 04:00, 07:00, 09:00, 11:00, 12:30, 15:00 and 19:00, at a published from-price of USD$18 per person, journey 1.5 hours, picking up at its Antigua office or at hotels in the historic centre.

Guatemala Transportation publishes eight, 03:00 through 23:00, at USD$20 for the 03:00 and 04:00 runs and USD$17 for the rest; the full table is on our airport-to-Antigua page. It publishes no Antigua pickup address, requires a reservation with partial or complete payment, states that reservation payments are non-refundable, keeps office hours of 8am to 7pm, and warns that last-minute payments are “completely at user risk” — terms that matter on a flight day.

On money: Guatemala Transportation converts at its own stated USD$1 = Q8, so USD$17 is Q136 and USD$20 is Q160 in cash quetzales. The Banco de Guatemala reference rate on 12 September 2026 was Q7.62817 per USD, which puts the same fares at Q129.68 and Q152.56 — paying in quetzales at the operator’s rate costs about 4.9% more. Atitrans publishes no conversion rate; at the reference rate its USD$18 is roughly Q137.

Where they will drop you is restricted, and departing travellers are the ones it catches. Atitrans: “Drop off in the city of Guatemala only zone 9, 10, 13 and international airport La Aurora. FDN & Cristobal Colon Bus Station”. Guatemala Transportation: “Shuttle service covers Zones 9,10,13. For any other destination, please ask in advance”.

If the flight is the whole trip, that is fine — La Aurora sits in zona 13. If your onward leg is an intercity bus from zona 1 or zona 17, one shuttle booking does not get you there by default; Atitrans is the only operator here that publishes bus-terminal drops. Private transfer: what is published, and what is not

Neither operator publishes a private-transfer price for the Antigua-to-airport direction. Atitrans publishes private prices only in the reverse direction: USD$75 for a private car and USD$90 for a private minivan, airport to Antigua, the minivan listed for 1 to 6 passengers.

We do not mirror those into the departure direction: the shared fares are not symmetrical either (USD$18 arriving versus USD$17 to USD$20 departing), so there is no basis for assuming the private ones are. Ask for a quote for your date and time. No operator publishes a private-car journey time here, so the worksheet’s 1.5 hours — a shared-shuttle figure — is the only published duration available.

The “5 hours before your flight” advice — read the date

You will find the claim that Guatemala’s civil aviation authority (DGAC) tells passengers to arrive 5 hours before an international flight at La Aurora. It was issued for one day.

On 22 August 2026 the DGAC published that recommendation for Sunday 23 August 2026 only, because the Municipality of Guatemala’s 42K marathon and its shorter companion race closed lanes across the city, with the airport sitting inside the 42K return leg along 7a avenida in zona 13. The line was:

“Le recomendamos anticipar su llegada al Aeropuerto Internacional La Aurora con más tiempo del que le recomienda su línea, al menos contemplar unas 5 horas antes de que salga su vuelo para evitar un contratiempo.”

— “We recommend anticipating your arrival at La Aurora International Airport with more time than your airline recommends, at least allowing about 5 hours before your flight departs to avoid a problem.”

So it is not a standing rule; treating it as one adds two hours to every trip. What it does tell you is the real mechanism: road closures around zona 13, not ordinary traffic, are what breaks this trip, and they recur — races, processions, protests, blockades. We could not confirm any standing DGAC figure: its own site returned no readable content on 12 September 2026.

If a closure is announced

• Check road closures and highway status the night before and again before you leave; if zona 13 or your route in is affected, drop to the next earlier published slot.
• For a pre-dawn departure with a closure announced, the published options are Guatemala Transportation’s 23:00 run plus a night in the city, or its 03:00 run with a thinner cushion.
• No operator publishes a closure policy or a refund if you miss a flight, and Guatemala Transportation’s reservation payments are explicitly non-refundable.
