The IGSS retirement pensión (pensión por riesgo de vejez) is the culmination of years of contributions to Guatemala’s social security system through the IVS program (Invalidez, Vejez y Sobrevivencia). For many Guatemalan workers, this pensión represents their primary source of income in retirement. The pensión is calculated based on the worker’s contribution history and the average salary reported during the last 60 months of employment.

The requirements sit in Acuerdo 1124, the Reglamento sobre Protección Relativa a Invalidez, Vejez y Sobrevivencia, which IGSS names as the normativa vigente for this benefit. Article 15 sets two tracks. Anyone who affiliated on or after 1 January 2011 needs 240 months of contribution effectively paid plus age 60. Anyone who affiliated earlier falls on a rising scale that reached the same 240 months on 1 June 2014, so in practice today’s applicants all face 240. The pensión itself starts at 50% of the remuneración base — the average of the salaries earned in the last 60 months of contribution — and grows by 0.5% of that base for each six months contributed beyond the first 120. The minimum is Q340 per month and IGSS publishes a maximum of Q7,200.

The application process is personal and free. IGSS explicitly states that no intermediaries, lawyers, or tramitadores are needed to apply for a retirement pensión. The worker visits the IVS offices with their identification and contribution records, fills out the application forms, and IGSS processes the request. Despite being free and straightforward, the process can take 1-3 months due to the verification of contribution records spanning decades.

Quick summary: IGSS retirement requires age 60+ and 240 monthly contributions (20 years). The pensión starts at 50% of the average salary of your last 60 months, plus 0.5% per six months contributed beyond your first 120, plus 10% per dependant, capped at 80% of that base. Minimum Q340/month, maximum Q7,200/month. Application is free — no lawyers needed. Processing: 1-3 months. Contact: 1522, option 3.

Contribution Requirements

Acuerdo 1124 art. 15 splits applicants into two tracks, and the split is by affiliation date, not by the year you turn 60.

Affiliated on or after 1 January 2011 — a flat 240 months of contribution effectively paid, plus age 60. No scale, no exceptions.

Affiliated before 1 January 2011 — the minimum rose on a published scale:

Requirement in force fromMinimum contributions
Up to 31 December 2010180 (15 years)
1 January 2011192 (16 years)
1 January 2013204 (17 years)
1 June 2013216 (18 years)
1 January 2014228 (19 years)
1 June 2014240 (20 years)

Since 1 June 2014 both tracks land in the same place: 240 months. The scale only matters when reconstructing an older entitlement.

How Your Pensión Is Calculated

Acuerdo 1124 art. 16 builds the pensión from three parts, on top of a base:

  • Base rate: 50% of your remuneración base
  • Seniority increment: +0.5% of the remuneración base for each six months of contribution beyond your first 120 months — the counter starts at 120, not at 240. Someone retiring on exactly 240 months carries 120 excess months, i.e. 20 six-month blocks, worth +10 percentage points
  • Asignación familiar: +10% of the amount produced by the two lines above, per qualifying family member (spouse or legalised unión de hecho, compañera, children under 18 or older children unable to work, and financially dependent parents)
  • Ceiling: the total for Invalidez Total, Vejez and Gran Invalidez cannot exceed 80% of the remuneración base. Above that limit the family allowances are cut back proportionally
  • Remuneración base: the average of the salaries earned in the 60 months of contribution before the right is acquired (art. 29). Invalidez and sobrevivencia use a 36-month window instead
  • Minimum pensión: Q340/month for Vejez or Invalidez Total including the family allowance (art. 30). A widow’s or compañera’s pensión floors at Q170 and an orphan’s at Q85
  • Maximum pensión: IGSS publishes Q7,200/month

Requirements

  • DPI of the applicant
  • IGSS affiliation number
  • Contribution record (constancia de cotizaciones) — obtainable at IGSS
  • IVS application forms
  • Age 60 or older
  • 240+ monthly contributions (for current retirees)

Step-by-Step Process

  1. Verify your contribution history — visit IGSS or request a constancia de cotizaciones to confirm you have 240+ months
  2. Get the requirement sheet and forms — the declaración jurada, the historial laboral form and the hoja de requisitos are published on the IGSS IVS page
  3. Complete the application forms with your personal and employment data
  4. Call to be processed — in the capital, phone 2412-1255 for an appointment at CATAFI in Oficinas Centrales; from the departments call the nearest Delegación or Caja Departamental, where no appointment is needed (Mon-Fri 08:00-16:00). The general line is 1522, option 3
  5. IGSS reviews your contribution history and calculates your pensión
  6. Receive resolution — IGSS notifies you of your approved pensión amount
  7. Pensión payments begin — monthly deposits to your designated bank account

From the US (Diaspora Info)

  • Guatemalans who worked in Guatemala and contributed to IGSS can claim their pensión even while living abroad
  • Grant a poder especial at a Guatemalan consulate to authorize someone in Guatemala to handle the application
  • Pensión payments can be deposited to a Guatemalan bank account that you access remotely
  • Verify your contributions before applying — many workers have gaps or periods where employers did not pay contributions despite deducting them from salary
  • The process is free. Do not pay tramitadores who claim to expedite pensión approvals

Tips & Common Mistakes

  • Verify your contributions BEFORE retirement. Check your contribution record years in advance. If there are gaps where your employer failed to pay IGSS, you can file a complaint to recover those periods.
  • Do not pay intermediaries. IGSS explicitly states the process is personal and free. Tramitadores who charge fees are unnecessary and potentially fraudulent.
  • The 60-month average matters. Your pensión is based on the average salary of your last 60 months. If you had periods of lower salary at the end of your career, consider the impact on your pensión calculation.
  • Keep records of all your employment. Employers sometimes fail to report correct salaries or contribution periods. Having your own records (pay stubs, contracts) helps resolve discrepancies.
  • You can have contributions from multiple employers. All IGSS contributions throughout your working life count toward the 240-month requirement, regardless of how many employers you had.

Details

Pagos van a cuenta bancaria guatemalteca.
