Champerico is the beach Xela goes to, and there is no tourist shuttle for it: the trip is a chicken bus from Terminal Minerva. Buses marked for Retalhuleu and Champerico run from early morning to evening; the published fare is an undated estimate, and nobody publishes the times back. The road is about 100 km through Retalhuleu. Everything below was read on 2 October 2026.
Quick summary
- Bus: chicken buses (camionetas) marked REU/CHA leave Terminal Minerva, Xela’s main terminal, about every 10 minutes from 04:30 to 19:30, according to EntreMundos’ Xela guide; Wikivoyage’s Xela timetable gives the same 04:30-19:30 span for Retalhuleu and Champerico.
- Time and fare: 2 to 2.5 hours to Champerico and Q10-20, both EntreMundos estimates on an undated page.
- Via Retalhuleu: if your bus stops in Retalhuleu, a direct bus runs on to Champerico (Wikivoyage), 37-39 km.
- Shuttle: none listed by the four shuttle sellers we checked (AtitlanTour, Guatemala Transportation, Atitrans, Adrenalina Tours).
- Driving: about 100 km, roughly 1 hour 40 minutes in OpenStreetMap routing.
By chicken bus, step by step
- Go to Terminal Minerva. EntreMundos’ advice is to skip the other pick-up spots in town and go to the Minerva terminal, the main terminal in Zona 3. Wikivoyage notes that buses from the main terminal also stop in town before leaving, for example at 7a Calle and 16 Avenida.
- Board the REU/CHA bus (Retalhuleu / Champerico). Ask the ayudante whether it goes through to Champerico or ends in Retalhuleu.
- If it ends in Retalhuleu, take the Champerico bus from there; Wikivoyage lists a direct one, and the last 37-39 km take about 40 minutes by road.
- Keep your bags with you. Wikivoyage warns that if you load your things on a second-class bus you should not get off, as the driver may leave without warning.

How current is this? EntreMundos’ page is undated, says its prices, times and journey lengths are estimates that vary by company, and no longer loads on its own site; we read it in the Wayback Machine’s copy of 7 November 2025. Wikivoyage is a wiki. Treat the fare as a guide and carry small notes.

Distances and times are OpenStreetMap routing (OSRM), measured 2 October 2026; the route runs down the Quetzaltenango–San Sebastián road to Retalhuleu, then the Retalhuleu–Champerico road. Real times depend on traffic and stops. From Guatemala City, guatemala.com puts the drive at about four and a half hours.
On the way: the IRTRA parks
Wikivoyage notes that buses between Retalhuleu and Quetzaltenango pass the entrances of the IRTRA parks, and EntreMundos lists Xocomil (water park) and Xetulul (amusement park) in the same Retalhuleu/Champerico section, 1 to 1.5 hours from Xela. For tickets and the Litegua tourist bus from the capital, see Guatemala City to Retalhuleu and IRTRA.
At Champerico
Guatemala.com (17 June 2026) describes a black volcanic sand beach and an iron-and-timber pier from the late 19th century, once a main exit point for Guatemalan coffee and no longer a commercial port; mangrove boat trips in the Manchón Guamuchal wetland with community guides; and a smaller tourist offer than other Pacific beaches, with some lodging and seafood comedores. Before a beach day, check the sea state on the Pacific marine forecast. Municipal data is on the Champerico municipality page.
What is not published
- The name of the bus company or a printed timetable for Xela–Champerico (none of the sources we read gives one).
- A 2026 fare; the only fare is EntreMundos’ undated Q10-20 estimate.
- The last bus from Champerico back to Retalhuleu or Xela.
- A shuttle or a published private-transfer price.
