The Biotopo del Quetzal — officially Biotopo Universitario para la Conservación del Quetzal Mario Dary Rivera — is a cloud-forest reserve on the CA-14 in Purulhá, Baja Verapaz, run by the San Carlos University’s CECON. Entry is Q40 for foreigners and Q20 for Guatemalans (AGN, 2023), and CONAP lists it open daily 8:00 to 16:00 (read 24 September 2026).
CECON calls it the best-known place to observe the national bird, and it is a cloud forest you can walk into straight from the highway. CONAP’s best quetzal hours start at 6:00, two hours before the gate opens, and entering early needs prior authorization.

We checked CONAP’s tourism portal, CECON’s page for the reserve and the Ministerio de Cultura’s cultural information system on 24 September 2026: none publishes a current fee. AGN, the state news agency, is the most recent published source, and three years old — take the figures as a guide and carry some extra cash.
Hours, and the dawn problem
CONAP lists public hours of Monday to Sunday, 8:00 to 16:00; AGN’s 2023 report said 7:00 to 16:00. At the same time, CONAP says the best times to see the quetzal are 6:00 to 10:30 and 17:00 to 18:30 — and adds that visits outside the set hours need prior authorization.
So if the bird is the point of your trip, contact the reserve before you go. CONAP lists (+502) 5333-6947 and biotopomariodaryrivera@gmail.com; AGN’s report gave the office phone 4123-5167. Without that, you can still walk the trails in the morning after the gate opens — 8:00 to 10:30 is inside CONAP’s best window.
When in the year
CONAP says the quetzal nests from February to May, so the probability of seeing one is high in those months. INGUAT’s guide adds that the dry season, November to April, usually gives better trail conditions, while in the rainy season the forest is at its greenest but some paths get slippery. A sighting is never guaranteed, INGUAT notes.
The trails
CONAP describes two interpretive trails:
- Los Helechos (the ferns) — 2 km.
- Los Musgos (the mosses) — 4 km.
Along the way are crystal-clear streams forming waterfalls and small pools. The Ministerio de Cultura’s listing adds that two pools were built so visitors can take a cold mountain-water bath, and that howler monkeys are seen and heard often on the trails. AGN counts 87 bird species in the Biotopo, the quetzal chief among them.
What to bring, per CONAP: comfortable walking clothes and shoes, a sweater and a rain jacket (the climate is cold and humid), binoculars, a swimsuit and insect repellent.
Getting there
CONAP’s route from Guatemala City: take the CA-9 toward the Atlantic and turn at km 85, El Rancho, onto the CA-14 toward Cobán. The entrance is on the highway itself — 160.5 km, about 3.5 hours. The Ministerio de Cultura notes the CA-14 is fully paved and passes three main entrances to the Biotopo. - INGUAT calls Cobán the usual starting point, 1.5 to 2 hours away.
- It combines with the rest of the Verapaces. INGUAT notes many travellers combine the Biotopo with Cobán, Semuc Champey and Laguna Lachuá.
