From Guatemala City, the practical way to Semuc Champey is a shared shuttle to Lanquín, the town about 10-11 km before the pools. Three sellers publish a day departure between 09:00 and 09:40 at US$45 to US$50, a fourth lists a seat from US$37 without a time, and two sell a night shuttle just before midnight at US$50. Adrenalina’s page prints two prices for the same day shuttle, US$45 on the product and 50 USD in its information table; ask which applies when you book. For the Lanquín day shuttle it asks you to reserve 48 hours ahead, says it does not pick up at hotels in Guatemala City (you take a taxi to the McDonald’s), and drops at the PUMA gas station before the Exxon in Lanquín. The Cobán block of the same page adds that the Cobán / Lanquín shuttle leaves from Antigua (so the capital pick-up time is approximate) and that in Lanquín it serves hotels in the centre only, not hotels near Semuc Champey.

Guatemala Transportation’s schedule places the Lanquín run in a “Guatemala City to Coban/Lanquin/Semuc Champey” block with a Cobán seat at the same 09:40 for US$40, and AtitlanTour’s gives the Cobán leg as 5 hours. That makes Cobán a possible stop-over: see Guatemala City to Cobán.

On Adrenalina’s figures (23:50 plus 7 hours) the night shuttle reaches Lanquín around 07:00, and you sleep on board instead of in a hotel. Greengos, a hostel beside the park, says its pick-ups run in coordination with the incoming tourist shuttles, day and night, so check with your lodge how an early-morning arrival is handled. Overnight travel in general, and the UK government’s advice on it, is covered on night buses in Guatemala.

Arriving from the airport

None of the four sellers lists La Aurora airport as a pick-up for the Lanquín run on the pages read (24-25 September 2026). Adrenalina’s only pick-up in the capital is McDonald’s Utatlán, and it does not collect at hotels, so an arrival day means a taxi to the meeting point or a night in the city first. Adrenalina boards at the bus station next to hotel El Recreo in Lanquín. AtitlanTour’s schedule lists 08:00 departures from Lanquín to Antigua, Panajachel, Chichicastenango, Flores and Río Dulce, but no Guatemala City row. If you are staying out at Semuc, Greengos runs a Q35 per person transfer to Lanquín at 07:00; it is included when you book an onward shuttle through the hostel.

From Lanquín to the pools

  • Distance: about 10-11 km. Greengos puts itself 11 km from Lanquín and a 10-minute walk from the park entrance; guatemala.com gives about 10 km and about 42 minutes on a dirt road.
  • Getting there: Greengos meets tourist shuttles at the Tourism Bus Terminal in Lanquín and says pick-up is guaranteed for guests with a reservation (no price is stated for that leg). guatemala.com describes a community bus or pick-up truck to the entrance, without a fare.
  • Cash: Greengos says the nearest ATM is in Lanquín and can be unreliable, and that there are no ATMs at Semuc Champey.

By public bus, in stages

  1. Guatemala City to Cobán with Transportes Monja Blanca. guatemala.com (updated 19 March 2026) gives about five hours. Monja Blanca publishes no fares on its website (checked 24 September 2026); where it boards in the capital, its timetable and its zona 1 transfer to Centra Norte are on Guatemala City to Cobán.
  2. Cobán to Lanquín by local bus. guatemala.com says these buses are smaller, with less room for luggage, and take about two hours depending on stops. It prints no fare or departure point, and none of the shuttle sellers we read sells a Cobán to Lanquín seat on its own.
  3. Lanquín to Semuc Champey by community bus or pick-up, per the same article.

Greengos asks travellers coming by colectivo to contact it before the trip, to leave early (no later than 8:00 AM), and warns that “many travelers are unable to complete the journey by colectivo in one day and end up overnighting in Cobán”.

Driving yourself

guatemala.com’s route runs up the CA-9 Norte toward Sanarate, through Baja Verapaz and Salamá to Cobán, then on toward San Pedro Carchá and Lanquín, and it recommends a 4x4 for the dirt road to Semuc, especially in the rainy season. Greengos says a 4x4 is recommended for the last 500 metres to its gate, from the yellow bridge. The drive as far as Cobán is covered on driving Guatemala City to Cobán.
