Guatemala City’s airport code is GUA and Flores’s is FRS. Those are the IATA codes you type into a booking site. Pilots, flight trackers and aviation weather services use the four-letter ICAO codes instead: MGGT for Guatemala City and MGMM for Flores (Mundo Maya). This page puts nine Guatemalan airports with published codes in one table. Those are the airports we searched. DGAC’s own register could not be read, so no source read for this page confirms the list is complete. Each code and each service claim carries the source that supports it and the date we read it.

Quick summary:

  • Guatemala City, La Aurora: IATA GUA, ICAO MGGT. This airport takes the international nonstops; see direct flights to Guatemala.
  • Flores, Mundo Maya: IATA FRS, ICAO MGMM. AGN places it in Santa Elena de la Cruz, Petén, 488 km from Guatemala City.
  • Quetzaltenango: IATA AAZ, ICAO MGQZ. Do not count it as an international airport today. AGN’s 25 August 2026 report describes it as an aerodrome in Phase I of a five-phase certification.
  • Secondary airfields with published codes: Puerto Barrios (PBR / MGPB), Retalhuleu (RER / MGRT), Cobán (CBV / MGCB), Huehuetenango (HUG / MGHT), Poptún (PON) and San José, Escuintla (GSJ / MGSJ).
  • What could not be read: DGAC, the airport regulator. Its website returned no readable content on 15 October 2026. As a result, this page has no official current list of scheduled service and no official airport register.

Nine Guatemalan airports, with codes and what flies there

The IATA codes come from IATA’s own code directory. The ICAO codes for GUA and FRS come from COCESNA, the Central American air-navigation agency. Its circular AIC A 87/21, published 12 November 2021 on behalf of DGAC, names both as international airports. All other ICAO codes come from the US NOAA Aviation Weather Center database. We read every source on 15 October 2026 (UTC).

Three notes on the table:

  • Mundo Maya in NOAA’s database. NOAA’s record for MGMM carries no IATA id. FRS comes from IATA’s directory.
  • Quetzaltenango in NOAA’s database. NOAA’s airport endpoint returned no record for Quetzaltenango. It appears only as a weather station, spelled Quezaltenango Arpt, with the codes AAZ and MGQZ.
  • Coverage. The table lists the airports we searched in IATA’s directory and NOAA’s database. It is not drawn from an official Guatemalan register, because DGAC’s could not be read.

How to use these codes

  1. Booking an international flight to Guatemala: search GUA. For which airlines fly nonstop from which cities, use direct flights to Guatemala. For fares, see our flights hub.
  2. Heading to Tikal or Petén: search FRS. IATA names the airport Mundo Maya Intl with Flores as its city, and AGN locates it in Santa Elena de la Cruz, so expect any of the three names. For the onward trip, see Flores airport to Tikal.
  3. Tracking a flight or checking aviation weather: use the ICAO code. That is MGGT for Guatemala City and MGMM for Flores.
  4. Flying to a smaller airfield: IATA and NOAA give codes for Puerto Barrios, Retalhuleu, Cobán, Huehuetenango, Poptún and San José. A code does not mean a scheduled flight. For the domestic carrier’s network, see TAG Airlines domestic flights. TAG’s website menu is a destination list, not a timetable.
  5. Confirm before you travel. This page is a reference, not legal advice. Confirm your own flight, airport and travel requirements with your airline before you book.

Quetzaltenango: why this page counts two international airports, not three

On 5 August 2023, AGN reported that DGAC “cuenta con tres aeropuertos internacionales” (has three international airports). AGN listed La Aurora, Mundo Maya and the de Occidente airport in Quetzaltenango, renamed from Los Altos. Later AGN reports describe a different status:

  • 5 March 2025. AGN reported a technical working group set up to “transformar el aeródromo de Quetzaltenango en un aeropuerto internacional” (turn the Quetzaltenango aerodrome into an international airport). The plan was an investment of about 40 million quetzales, with the goal of being “apto para recibir vuelos internacionales a finales de 2026” (ready to receive international flights at the end of 2026).
  • 20 June 2025. AGN reported the 40 million quetzal investment reaffirmed, aimed at international certification.
  • 25 August 2026. AGN reported: “Este proceso se desarrolla en cinco fases, de las cuales actualmente se ejecuta la Fase I, correspondiente a la etapa documental y de presolicitud”. In English: five phases, with Phase I, the documentary and pre-application stage, under way. AGN said authorities expected to finish Phase I between late August and mid-September 2026.

No document read for this page states when Quetzaltenango stopped being counted as international. No report after 25 August 2026 was captured either. Until a later source says certification is complete, this page lists AAZ as an aerodrome in certification.

Flores (Mundo Maya): the second airport

AGN’s 6 May 2024 report gives these facts about Mundo Maya:

  • It is the second-largest and busiest airport in Guatemala after La Aurora.
  • Its runway is the largest in Guatemala, 3,000 metres long.
  • It is administered by DGAC.
  • It had handled more than 116,962 passengers in 2024 at the time of the report, up 26.2% on the same period of the previous year.

AGN also wrote that the airport “opera regularmente vuelos comerciales entre Guatemala, Belice, México y vuelos Chárter o estacionales desde Estados Unidos”. In English: regular commercial flights between Guatemala, Belize and Mexico, plus charter or seasonal flights from the United States. That was a 2024 description. Our direct flights page checked schedules on 24 August 2026 and found Guatemala City, flown by TAG, as the only scheduled nonstop from FRS.

What DGAC could not be read for

DGAC is Guatemala’s airport regulator. AGN reported in May 2024 that it administers Mundo Maya, and COCESNA’s 2021 circular was published on its behalf. Our MICIVI page also covers DGAC. We could not read any DGAC source on 15 October 2026:

  • dgac.gob.gt returned an empty JavaScript page, and its content service answered with an access-denied error.
  • Its older PDF documents had been removed.
  • An archived copy of its La Aurora page could not be retrieved.

Because of this, the following are missing from this page:

  • DGAC’s own airport and aerodrome register, which is why this page does not claim its list is complete.
  • A current official list of which airports have scheduled commercial service.
  • The ICAO code for Poptún.
  • La Aurora’s official street address, phone and passenger numbers.
  • Departure tax or airport fee amounts.
  • Elevations, runway lengths (except AGN’s 3,000 m figure for Mundo Maya), terminal facilities and opening hours.

TAG’s destination menu (inside and outside Guatemala)

TAG Airlines’ website, read on 15 October 2026, lists these destinations:

  • Guatemala: Guatemala City, Flores and Puerto Barrios.
  • Honduras: San Pedro Sula, Tegucigalpa and Roatán.
  • Mexico: Mérida, marked for November 2026.
  • Belize.

The site gives a Guatemala phone number, +502 2380 9400. An airline’s destination menu is marketing, not a timetable, so confirm the current schedule with TAG.
