Iximché, the Kaqchikel capital in Tecpán, Chimaltenango, is 56 km from Antigua, and without a car we found three published ways to reach it: a shuttle to Tecpán, a private tour, or the chicken bus. The shuttle is the cheapest published option at from USD 15. The operators’ pages below were read on 25 September 2026; the site’s hours and directions on 24 September 2026. What the private tour covers. Adrenalina’s itinerary visits Iximché, then an altar of San Simón (Maximón) in San Andrés Itzapa, then San Juan Comalapa, which it describes as home to many Kaqchikel painters, with murals on the town’s walls. It lists a guide and all transportation as included.

Timing a day with the shuttle

Atitrans publishes a 2-hour journey. Iximché opens 08:00-16:00 every day, per the Ministerio de Cultura y Deportes.

By this arithmetic, only the 08:00 departure leaves more than two hours at the site. The museum keeps shorter hours, Tuesday to Sunday, 09:00-12:00 and 13:00-16:00, so on a Monday it is closed.

Coming back. A search of Atitrans’ site for Tecpán on 25 September 2026 returned only the Antigua to Tecpán shuttle, and its page lists no return times. Ask about the return when you book; the private tour avoids the question because it is door to door.

The chicken-bus route

A guide published by Tropicana Hostel in Antigua says the budget route is a chicken bus from Antigua or Guatemala City to Tecpán, then a tuk-tuk or taxi to the ruins. It gives no fares or times, and no bus company publishes a timetable for the route that we could find. Our chicken bus guide covers how the camionetas work and the Antigua fares that are published.

Getting there by car

The Ministerio de Cultura’s directions: take the CA-1 west, turn left at kilometre 88 onto the road to the town of Tecpán, and follow the paved road for 3 km to the site. It puts Iximché 56 km from Antigua and 91 km from Guatemala City.

Atitrans’ shuttle page does not mention the entry, and Adrenalina’s tour lists only the guide and transport as included, so budget the fee separately.

  • A return shuttle from Tecpán to Antigua.
  • A fare or distance for the tuk-tuk or taxi from Tecpán to the site.
  • A chicken-bus timetable or fare from Antigua to Tecpán.
  • Whether the Atitrans shuttle will drop you at the site instead of Albergues de Tecpán; ask when you book.
