Equiparación de estudios is the process by which Guatemala’s Ministry of Education (MINEDUC) recognises studies completed in another country so the student can join the Sistema Educativo Nacional. This page keeps its old URL, but the name on the page is now the name MINEDUC uses — and the distinction is not cosmetic. From the instructivo’s own glossary:
- Equiparación de estudios — “el proceso que permite el reconocimiento de estudios realizados en el extranjero para la incorporación del estudiante en el Sistema Educativo Nacional, al grado inmediato superior al último aprobado o al grado en el que se encontraba cursado previo a su ingreso al país.”
- Equivalencia de estudios — “establecer la semejanza o diferencia de dos planes de estudios o estructuras curriculares realizados en el Sistema Educativo Nacional con el fin de nivelar académicamente al estudiante…”
A child educated abroad needs an equiparación. Equivalencia is the internal-transfer process between two Guatemalan study plans. Homologación is the university-degree word, and that route is handled by USAC, not MINEDUC.
Who qualifies: the instructivo says MINEDUC “podrá conceder equiparaciones de estudios a estudiantes que ingresan de forma legal al país, retornados o estudiantes familiares del Cuerpo Diplomático Nacional o Extranjero”.
Quick summary: Studies done abroad are recognised through equiparación de estudios, governed by Acuerdo Ministerial No. 1753-2019 and MINEDUC’s instructivo
ACR-INS-01(Versión 5). It costs Q 0. The file is filed by the parent or guardian on MINEDUC’s BPM platform and worked by the Dirección Departamental de Educación (DIDEDUC), which verifies it “en un máximo de 3 días hábiles” and assigns level and grade “en un máximo de 5 días hábiles”. The apostille can be waived for retornados — a discretion, not an automatic exemption, so ask before you pay for one. Sworn translation is needed only for the document backing the last approved or current grade. University degrees are a different process (homologación, via USAC).
MINEDUC rules on this page verified September 2026.
Which Institution Handles Your Case
| Level | Institution | Process |
|---|---|---|
| Studies completed abroad — preprimaria, primaria, media | MINEDUC — filed on BPM, resolved by the DIDEDUC | Equiparación de estudios |
| Two study plans both completed inside the national system | MINEDUC / DIGEACE | Equivalencia de estudios |
| University degree (licenciatura, master) | USAC | Homologación de título |
What It Costs
Q 0. Guatemala’s Catálogo de Trámites lists the cost as Q 0.
Third-party costs can still apply — the sworn translation, and an apostille where one is genuinely required — but MINEDUC charges nothing for the equiparación itself.
Requirements
From the instructivo (Actividad 1):
- Solicitud on form
ACR-FOR-01, signed by the parent or guardian — or by the student if of age - “Documento de Identificación Personal -DPI- o pasaporte del solicitante” (parent, mother or guardian), plus the supporting legal document if a guardian
- For a nivel-medio título or diploma: the título, diploma or the legal document that substitutes it, plus the apostille on the same condition
- Traducción jurada, when the documents are not in Spanish — “deberá solicitarse únicamente del documento que respalde el último grado aprobado o en curso”
Apostille can be waived for retornados
Verbatim from the instructivo:
“El requisito de apostilla puede exonerarse a estudiantes retornados y a los indicados en el artículo 20 del Acuerdo Ministerial 1753-2019, con la finalidad de facilitar la inserción en el SEN.”
Read that carefully: puede exonerarse is a discretion, not an automatic exemption. Note that it covers a forced return as well as a voluntary one. Ask the DIDEDUC or the school for a decision on your own case before paying for apostilles — and before deciding to skip them.
The Process and Its Deadlines
The parent, guardian or (if of age) the student files the expediente digitally on MINEDUC’s BPM platform, bpm.mineduc.gob.gt, on form ACR-FOR-01. The Dirección Departamental de Educación (DIDEDUC) for the department of the school code you name is the office that works it — not the school on its own, and not a walk-in window.
| Step | Who does it | Deadline |
|---|---|---|
| Notify the applicant by email | BPM platform, automatically | on completion |
| Enrol the student in SIRE per the resolución | Director del Centro Educativo | “en un máximo de 3 días hábiles” |
The resolución carries a QR code as its validation device: “La resolución de equiparación debe contar con un código QR, como dispositivo de validación”. For a nivel-medio título or diploma, the DIDEDUC likewise generates the resolución “en un máximo de 3 días hábiles”.
If the Child Arrives Without Documents
The school still has to enrol them. From Nota 4 of the instructivo, which invokes Article 12, “obligación de inscripción”:
“Las autoridades de los centros educativos están obligadas a asegurar la incorporación al SEN y la inscripción al grado y nivel correspondiente al solicitante”, y precisa que esto rige “mientras finalice el proceso y se emita la resolución correspondiente”.
If identity paperwork is what is missing, the applicant “tendrá un máximo de 3 meses para completarla”. In the meantime BPM issues a constancia stating that the school “puede inscribir al estudiante en el libro de inscripciones, en tanto completa la documentación de identificación” — so the child sits in class while the file is finished. SIRE enrolment itself is done by the school director once the resolución is issued.
- Preprimaria and primaria: the grade is determined from the student’s age and the information the parent or guardian gives on the solicitud form (Article 17).
- Nivel medio (básico and diversificado): the DIDEDUC issues an authorisation for “pruebas de ubicación de las áreas de Ciencias Naturales y Matemáticas según artículos 18 y 19”, sat at the school where the student will continue. The school writes them against DIGECUR’s published “Criterios prueba ubicación”, and “Las pruebas se realizarán en el idioma español o inglés según las necesidades del estudiante.” First básico is exempt: “Se exceptúa de dicha evaluación a los estudiantes que les corresponda primero básico”.

The table’s note on a finished secondary education, verbatim:
“Para estudios finalizados a nivel de educación media o secundaria, y obtenido el diploma, certificado o documento que lo acredite, se aplica la equiparación a un Bachillerato en Ciencias y Letras.”
A graduate is equiparado to a completed Bachillerato en Ciencias y Letras. A student transferring mid-high-school is placed by the table — one Guatemalan year “behind” a naive grade-for-grade mapping.
From the US (Diaspora Info)
- Do not assume you must apostille everything. The instructivo names retornados as a group whose apostille requirement can be waived — puede exonerarse. That is a discretion, so ask the DIDEDUC or the school first; do not assume it. Read Nota 2 and Artículo 20 of AM 1753-2019 against your own situation before spending money on apostilles in the US.
- One sworn translation, not a stack. Only the document backing the last approved or current grade needs the traducción jurada.
- The venue is the BPM platform, and the DIDEDUC decides, on business-day deadlines — not a months-long central queue and not a counter you queue at.
- A child with no papers still gets enrolled. Article 12 obliges it, and placement happens by age or by test.
- The placement test can be sat in English (the instructivo, Actividad 3).
- For university degrees, the process is homologación and it is handled by USAC, not MINEDUC.
Edge Cases & Special Situations
Details
MINEDUC’s equiparación table settles the ordinary cases. For anything it does not cover, the table’s own Nota 4 sends the decision upward: “Los casos especiales o no previstos serán resueltos por la DIGEACE.” File it on the BPM platform as normal; the DIDEDUC works the expediente, and a case the table does not answer is routed to DIGEACE.
Details
The documentary requirement does not change with the type of US school: the solicitud ACR-FOR-01, the IDs, and the constancia de estudios (or diploma) of the last approved grade. Apostille applies only where the country of origin is a party to the convenio de La Haya — and Nota 2 of the instructivo says that requirement can be waived (puede exonerarse) for retornados, at MINEDUC’s discretion. The traducción jurada is required only for the document backing the last approved or current grade.

USAC handles university-degree homologación, not MINEDUC.
Tips & Common Mistakes
- Gather school records before you leave, but settle the apostille question first — for retornados the instructivo says the requirement puede exonerarse. Confirm the waiver with the DIDEDUC or the school before paying for apostilles.
- Do not pay for a translation of every report card. The instructivo asks for the traducción jurada of one document: the one backing the last approved or current grade.
- The traductor jurado requirement is strict. A bilingual friend’s translation will not be accepted.
- Each child needs a separate equiparación. The process is completed individually for each student.
- Private schools may have additional requirements beyond what MINEDUC asks. Colegio Interamericano, for instance, publishes a full consular-legalization chain — local ministry of education, Guatemalan consulate, Ministerio de Relaciones Exteriores, then Ministerio de Educación. That is a school policy, not the law. Check with the specific school before enrolling.
