Diversified: Q500-1,500 / 2-4 months · University: Q1,500-3,500 / 4-8 months · Diaspora total estimated: USD 500-1,500 · Verified: May 2026

If you studied high school or university in the United States and plan to live or work in Guatemala, you need to recognize your degree to be legally accepted. This guide is the step-by-step operational flow for US diaspora, based on Decree Law 31-94 (Guatemala’s legal recognition framework) and the Hague Convention (apostille).

Quick summary: US degree recognition in Guatemala via MINEDUC (diversified/high school) or USAC (university). Decree Law 31-94 legal basis. Total diaspora cost USD 500-1,500. Time 3-8 months (extended to 12-18 if regulated profession). The flow: US Secretary of State apostille -> shipping to Guatemala -> sworn translation -> MINEDUC or USAC procedure -> equivalency resolution.

Applies to: Guatemalans in the US returning with high school diploma or university degree; diaspora planning return and wanting to practice profession in Guatemala; regulated professionals (doctors, lawyers, engineers) requiring registration; students with US high school seeking admission at Guatemalan university.

Difference from the general recognition guide

This guide does NOT duplicate the Foreign Degree Recognition page covering the general framework for any country (Mexico, Spain, Europe, USA). This page is the specific operational flow for US diaspora — with Secretary of State addresses, USD amounts, real FedEx/DHL times, sworn translators in Guatemala, and common cases of returning diaspora.

When you need recognition vs not

You do NOT need recognition if

  • You work remotely for US company while living in Guatemala (your US degree serves directly for your employer)
  • You seek employment at international bilingual school in Guatemala (CAG, AIS, Liceo Javier — accept US degrees directly)
  • You seek employment at multinational companies in Guatemala (call centers, BPO, tech) where they value your US degree more than recognition
  • You don’t plan to practice a regulated profession or enroll in Guatemalan public university

You DO need recognition if

  • You want to enroll at USAC, URL, UVG, UMG or other Guatemalan university with US high school degree
  • You want to continue graduate program at Guatemalan university with US bachelor’s
  • You’re a regulated professional (doctor, lawyer, engineer, architect, accountant, psychologist, dentist) and want to practice in Guatemala
  • You want to work in Guatemalan public sector (Ministry, municipality, autonomous institutions)
  • You need academic certification for consular or migration procedure

Decree Law 31-94 (Law of Recognition of Studies Conducted Abroad) is the legal basis of all recognition in Guatemala. It establishes:

  • MINEDUC has competency to recognize secondary level (basic and diversified) studies from abroad
  • USAC has competency to recognize university studies (undergraduate and graduate)
  • Procedure of comparative evaluation of curricula
  • Fees and administrative deadlines
  • Appeals available if rejected (review, appeal)

Any private university in Guatemala (URL, UVG, UMG, UPANA) can establish more flexible recognition agreements for their own students — but the official state recognition is done by USAC.

Apostille chain in the US — step-by-step

University diplomas

University diplomas signed by the president or registrar of the university are apostilled directly at the Secretary of State of the state where the university is. They don’t require prior notarization.

Official transcripts

Transcripts issued by the university Registrar are apostilled directly as well. If you order transcripts via online service (Parchment, National Student Clearinghouse), the document arrives digitally signed — some Secretaries of State accept it that way, others require printed version with physical signature.

High school diplomas

High school diplomas may require prior notarization (a notary public certifies the principal or superintendent’s signature is authentic) and THEN Secretary of State apostille. Some states accept the diploma directly without notarization if signed by superintendent. Verify with your Secretary of State.

Documents you typically apostille (university degree)

  1. Original diploma (1 document)
  2. Official transcripts (1-2 documents depending on university)
  3. Curriculum / Course descriptions (1 document — university issues via Registrar)
  4. Institutional accreditation certification (1 document — optional but recommended)
  5. University letter confirming official US recognition of the institution (optional)

Total: 3-5 documents = USD 50-250 in apostilles

Documents for diversified (high school)

  1. High school diploma (1 document)
  2. Transcripts (1 document — usually consolidated)

Total: 2 documents = USD 20-100 in apostilles

Sworn translation in Guatemala

Who does sworn translations

Only sworn translators authorized by the Guatemalan Judicial Organism. Don’t work:

  • Certified translators from the US
  • Online services like Translated.com or ProZ.com (unless the translator is Guatemalan sworn)
  • Google Translate or AI
  • Unauthorized Spanish teachers

Finding sworn translator

  • Official list at MINEX (Ministry of Foreign Affairs)
  • MINEDUC recommendation or USAC (some institutions have short list)
  • Returned diaspora forums (Facebook groups, WhatsApp)
  • College of Lawyers and Notaries maintains list of judicial translators

Common diaspora mistakes

  1. Apostilling in wrong state. The Secretary of State of the state where you were BORN is not the one that apostilles — the Secretary of State of the state where the document was ISSUED (university or high school) apostilles.

  2. Thinking US certified translation works. Only sworn translator authorized in Guatemala. Without Guatemalan sworn seal, MINEDUC and USAC reject.

  3. Sending copies instead of originals. Guatemala requires apostilled original documents. Certified copies don’t work for official recognition.

  4. Not requesting complete curriculum. For USAC the curriculum with course descriptions is ESSENTIAL. Request from your university Registrar with time (can take 2-4 weeks).

  5. Underestimating time. The REAL process from US takes 6-12 months for university. If your plan is to move in 3 months, start TODAY.

  6. Not considering regulated profession. If you’re a doctor, lawyer, engineer — USAC recognition is just the first step. Registration may take 6-18 additional months with complementary exams.

  7. Not coordinating with Guatemalan university. If you plan to enroll at USAC later, contact them BEFORE starting recognition. Some careers have specific requirements that may change the process.

  8. Forgetting birth certificate. Some diaspora were born in US and don’t have Guatemalan birth certificate. Before any procedure, manage birth registration at consulate or RENAP. See US-Born Kids — Returning to Guatemala.

Final operational tips

If you plan to return in 12 months

  • Start transcripts request: now (month 0)
  • Apostille at Secretary of State: month 1-2
  • Shipping to Guatemala: month 2-3
  • Sworn translation: month 3-4
  • MINEDUC or USAC procedure: month 4-12
  • Arrive in Guatemala with recognized degree (ideally)

If you’re already in Guatemala without recognition

  • Work in private sector or multinational while processing
  • Start the process from Guatemala requesting transcripts from your US university by mail
  • Realistic timeline 6-12 months from Guatemala
  • If you need to practice regulated profession urgently, consider starting non-regulated work first

If regulated profession is urgent

  • Verify with your professional college if they have fast-track or reciprocity with your US university
  • Some countries have specific agreements with prestigious US universities
  • Consider taking revalidation exams instead of complete courses if your college offers them
  • Decree Law 31-94 — Law of Recognition of Studies Conducted Abroad: main framework
  • Political Constitution of Guatemala (Art. 71-81): education as universal right
  • Hague Apostille Convention (1961): Guatemala adhered 2017; US since 1981
  • Mandatory Professional Registration Law (Decree 72-2001): regulated professions
  • USAC Statutes: internal university procedure

Information verified May 2026. Costs and times are typical ranges — confirm with DIGEACE, USAC and your professional college before starting the process. For complex cases (regulated profession, missing courses, previous rejection), consult a manager specialized in recognitions.
