El Paredon has an operator-described surf beach; Monterrico offers mangrove boat rides, while INGUAT warns that its ocean waves can be strong. Our banded Airbnb locality samples recorded 17 October 2026, for 2 adults staying 17–19 November 2026, had all-types medians of US$100 per night in El Paredon Buena Vista and US$325 in Monterrico. Those samples mix rooms and homes, so the medians do not establish what equivalent accommodation costs in either town.
Quick summary
- Surf: Paredon Surf House describes chest- to head-high waves from November to April and head-high plus from May to October, checked 25 October 2026.
- Swimming: the checked sources do not establish which beach is safer; a surf description is not a swimming-safety assessment.
- Lodging: our Airbnb private-room samples recorded 17 October 2026 had nightly medians of US$60 in El Paredon and US$70 in Monterrico for the stay above.
- From Antigua: Guatemala Transportation lists El Paredon at US$20 per person and Monterrico at US$30 per person, checked 25 October 2026.
- Mangroves: Johnny’s Place lists a Monterrico boat ride from Q100 per person, checked 25 October 2026. El Paredon’s group-priced sunset offer has a different billing basis.
- Turtles: release participation depends on the season (INGUAT); the checked Monterrico operator page gives no contribution amount or dated release calendar.

What the accommodation figures mean
The Airbnb figures describe asking rates for a particular future stay, rather than confirmed reservations or a checkout total with taxes. A promotion Airbnb displays may already be included in the nightly rate. The private-room figures compare a narrower accommodation type than the all-types medians, but still do not compare matched properties.
These are the banded locality figures from our 17 October 2026 Airbnb capture, also used in our Monterrico and El Paredón accommodation guides. Our separate, broader Airbnb town aggregates contain different listing counts and medians; they are not interchangeable with this filtered comparison. The broader sample also includes searches with larger parties for larger homes, so it cannot be relabelled as a uniform search for 2 adults.
For a booking decision, compare the actual property, guest count and final total for your dates. A sample median is not a hotel’s tariff or evidence of present availability.
Surf and swimming answer different questions
Paredon Surf House describes a black-sand beach break and publishes the seasonal wave descriptions above. It also advertises board rentals and surf lessons. Those are the operator’s statements, checked 25 October 2026; the seasonal description does not promise wave size for a particular day. Our El Paredon surf guide covers the activity in more detail.
INGUAT’s Monterrico guide warns that waves can be strong and urges care entering the water. That warning does not support presenting Monterrico as a calm-water alternative to El Paredon.
The INSIVUMEH wave bulletin retrieved on 25 October 2026 was issued 18 October 2026 at 06:00. It cannot establish conditions for this comparison date or your travel day. Check the issue date on the official wave-forecast page and the Pacific marine forecast before making a water-activity plan. The checked material provides no defensible ranking of the beaches by swimming risk.
Mangroves and turtles: compare the billing basis
Johnny’s Place, Monterrico, checked 25 October 2026: its tours page lists a mangrove boat ride from Q100 per person. It describes boatmen explaining the local nature and wildlife, but gives no duration or exact list of inclusions. The starting price therefore does not establish the total for a particular departure. See the Monterrico mangrove tour guide.
Tours in El Paredon, checked 25 October 2026: its sunset mangrove and river-mouth experience lists Q500.00 or $75.00 for 1–5 people, about 2 hours, accommodation pickup and drop-off, and kayaks and SUPs included. Children under 7 years old are free. The same offer also says small groups of 4–8 maximum, which conflicts with the pricing group’s stated size. Confirm the accepted party size and total with the operator; this is a group price, unlike Johnny’s Place’s per-person starting tariff.
The Driftwood Surfer, El Paredon, checked 25 October 2026: its activities page says guests can take part in its daily turtle release at 5:30 AM from September to December, on a donation basis. It separately lists nest adoption at Q100 for a full nest or Q50 for half a nest. Those adoption amounts are not release admission prices.
Johnny’s Place describes Monterrico turtle releases as requiring a small contribution but does not state an amount. INGUAT says participation depends on the season. The checked pages do not establish a current Monterrico fee or a dated release calendar; confirm availability with the project before arranging travel around a release. See the Monterrico turtle-release guide.

For the return, Guatemala Transportation lists Monterrico to Antigua at 03:00pm, US$30 per person, checked 25 October 2026. AtitlanTour’s page prints conflicting return fares: US$28 in its Antigua–Monterrico block and US$30 in its Monterrico departure block, both per person at 03:00pm. It also prints conflicting capital/airport return fares of US$40 and US$45 per person. Its Antigua round-trip offer is US$55 per person with an open return. Obtain the return terms in writing rather than resolving those differences by assumption.
The Antigua to Monterrico guide, Antigua to El Paredon guide and Guatemala City to Monterrico guide cover the individual routes. For either destination, confirm that the departure, pickup and accommodation address match your booking.
