This page explains how to put an existing electricity meter in your name in Guatemala, for example after buying, renting or inheriting a property. If the property has no meter yet, that is a different procedure: new electricity service with EEGSA or Energuate.

The requirements come from the official pages and documents of EEGSA and Energuate, checked 21 October 2026.

EEGSA: a name change is a new contract

EEGSA recommends a name change when a property gets a new owner or tenant, when the account holder has died or when a company name needs updating. Its requirements sheet says the change “implica la realización de un nuevo contrato” (means making a new contract): the existing contract is closed and a new one is signed. EEGSA says its requirements ensure the new contract keeps the same technical and commercial characteristics, with no disconnection during the process.

EEGSA requirements for a contract in the owner’s name

  1. Show the latest electricity bill fully paid.
  2. File at least seven days before the meter-reading date, or once the month’s billing has been loaded.
  3. Request letter with the current user’s and the new user’s names, NIT, phone number, a DPI copy (current, or proof of replacement) and the billing address if it differs from the installation address.
  4. Proof of ownership: deed, purchase contract, a subdivider’s letter or a current lease. It must show the cadastral address; if not, add the original document from the municipal cadastre department.
  5. New guarantee deposit, based on the declared load or calculated from kWh consumption. If you guarantee it with a bond (fianza), ask EEGSA for a letter stating the amount.
  6. If the new user cannot sign the contract: a letter from the new customer authorising another adult, and a DPI copy of the person signing.

For contracts in a company’s name, EEGSA also asks for a copy of the legal representative’s current appointment, the representative’s DPI and, if the representative does not sign, a letter authorising someone else plus that person’s DPI.

EEGSA’s request letter (2026 template)

EEGSA publishes a 2026 letter template addressed to Empresa Eléctrica de Guatemala, S.A. These are the fields it asks for:

Template fieldWhat you fill in
Place and dateGuatemala, day, month and year
ApplicantYour full name and DPI number
ServiceName it is registered under, correlativo number and meter number

The previous holder’s deposit

EEGSA says the deposit refund is processed when a holder change or a final disconnection is filed. Only the account holder can request it, online.

Energuate: contract-holder change

Energuate calls the procedure cambio titular del contrato and applies it when a customer asks to change the name on an existing electricity contract. Its requirements:

  1. Show the DPI of the contract holder.
  2. Give the supply’s NIS (supply ID number).
  3. Update your phone numbers, email and NIT.
  4. The supply must have no unpaid bills.
  5. Sign the holder-change request at any Oficina Comercial.
  6. “Presenta acta de defunción (en el caso que aplique)” (bring the death certificate, where applicable).
  7. Be up to date on your payments.

Energuate’s page does not say whether the DPI is the outgoing or the incoming holder’s. If in doubt, call 2385-2222 before you go.

If you inherited the property

Energuate asks for the death certificate where applicable, and EEGSA lists the holder’s death among the cases for a name change. EEGSA also asks for proof of property showing the cadastral address. For the death and inheritance paperwork, see the death certificate and inheritance and succession guides.
