To look for a business loan in Guatemala, start with the product and its application requirements. This guide covers MiPyme financing through the Ministerio de Economía (MINECO), development banking, cooperatives and private banks, with a checklist for preparing your application.

Quick summary: Identify your business stage, ask which products accept your applicant profile, and prepare an investment plan. MINECO’s financial support program works through intermediaries. Banrural publishes separate document lists for individuals and individuals required to keep accounts. Ask each lender for its current terms before applying.

Options by Business Stage

Use this table as a list of questions to take to prospective lenders, rather than a ranking of who will approve your application.

StageWhat to ask before applying
Idea / pre-launchDoes the program finance a business that has not started trading? Ask MINECO about currently available support.
New, informal businessDoes the lender accept your applicant category, and what evidence of business activity does it require?
Registered microenterprise (Patente de Comercio + NIT)Ask a participating MINECO intermediary or Banrural which product and document list apply.
Small business with a track recordRequest business-loan quotations and ask what financial records each lender needs.
Growing business with collateralAsk which assets the lender accepts as security and how the proposed loan would be repaid.

MiPyme: What It Is and Where to Start

MiPyme means micro, small and medium-sized enterprises. Start with the MINECO MIPYME section and ask about current programs and participating financial-service entities.

MINECO’s Fondo de Apoyo Financiero a la MIPYME information sheet describes banca de segundo piso (second-tier lending). The ministry does not lend directly to entrepreneurs. Its program qualifies and lends to participating financial-service entities, which may be:

  • Cooperativas de Ahorro y Crédito (savings and credit cooperatives).
  • Asociaciones (associations).
  • Fundaciones (foundations).
  • Cámaras Gremiales (trade chambers).

The sheet describes the fund as being for owners of MIPYMEs in the country who are over 18 years old. It lists these ceilings in its original units:

  • Microenterprise: up to Q250 mil.
  • Small enterprise: up to Q500 mil.
  • Medium-sized enterprise: up to Q1.5 millones.

The file is identified as 2025 in its filename. Treat these as the sheet’s published conditions and confirm current availability, eligibility and limits with MINECO and the participating intermediary before relying on them.

Where to start: visit MINECO’s official portal, ask which programs and application channels are active, and request the current amounts, requirements and terms. Ask for the participating intermediary’s details rather than assuming that the ministry receives loan applications directly.

Development Banking: CHN and Banrural

Crédito Hipotecario Nacional (CHN)

Before preparing an application for CHN, ask the institution to identify its current business-loan product and provide the corresponding requirements and quotation. Avoid treating a general reference to development banking as confirmation of a particular loan or preferential rate.

Banrural

Banrural’s Crédito Amigo Microempresario distinguishes persona individual (individual applicant) from persona individual que debe llevar contabilidad (individual required to keep accounts). Use the matching list in the documents section below.

If you use the bank’s payment simulator, its results are approximate and may differ when the loan is granted. They are not a complete offer. The simulation excludes administrative, formalization and other expenses, which the bank says would be disclosed before contracting. The bank also states that it will not be liable for loss or damage arising from decisions based on the calculator. Ask for the complete written quotation before deciding.

CONADI: Support for Persons with Disabilities

CONADI is the Consejo Nacional para la Atención de las Personas con Discapacidad (National Council for the Care of Persons with Disabilities).

Its inclusive employment and entrepreneurship fair report, published on October 16, 2026, described a past event organized with MINTRAB and MINECO. Entrepreneurs with disabilities, employers and organizations participated to showcase products, promote businesses and connect with employment opportunities.

For current entrepreneurship support, contact CONADI through its official channels. The fair report does not establish an active CONADI loan facility.

Cooperatives for Entrepreneurs

For a cooperative option, consult Cooperativa Salcajá directly. Ask whether it has a loan suited to your business stage and request its membership, savings, income-documentation and guarantee conditions before applying.

Compare the actual quotation and eligibility rules. Do not assume that a cooperative will accept informal income or approve an application that a private bank declines.

Private Banks with SME Products

Use the business banking comparison to explore banking services while you request a business-financing quotation directly from each institution.

Ask which documents apply to your business and applicant category. Request confirmation of any requirements for registration, tax documentation, financial statements, an investment plan, guarantees and credit history. For preparation, see the SAT RTU registration guide and SAT tax clearance certificate guide. Check with the lender which documents it actually requires.

Documents: A Strong Application File

Build your file around the lender’s product-specific list. For Banrural’s Crédito Amigo Microempresario, the published categories are:

Entrepreneur’s Documents

For an individual applicant, Banrural lists:

  • DPI (Documento Personal de Identificación, personal identification document). See the DPI guide.
  • NIT (Número de Identificación Tributaria, tax identification number). See CUI/NIT lookup.
  • A water or electricity bill.
  • An investment plan or quotation.

Business Documents (Where Applicable)

For an individual required to keep accounts, Banrural lists:

  • DPI.
  • NIT.
  • A water or electricity bill.
  • Patente de Comercio (commercial registration certificate).
  • Cash flow.
  • An investment plan or project.

The Registro Mercantil is the official registration reference. Ask your lender which applicant category applies before assembling the file.

A Practical Business Plan

As a preparation checklist, consider including:

  • Who you are: experience and training.
  • What your business does: product or service.
  • Market and competition: target customers and what makes your offer different.
  • Operations: how and where the business works, and who is involved.
  • Financial projections: use realistic assumptions and identify the period covered.
  • Use of the loan: what you intend to buy and how it supports the business.
  • Repayment: the cash flow you expect to use.

Keep the explanation concise, make the figures clear, and ask the lender what format and supporting detail it wants.

Rates, Terms and Guarantees

Request a written quotation from each institution. Ask for the interest rate, repayment term, fees, required guarantees and total repayment. Compare offers for the same intended investment and ask how principal prepayments or early payoff would work.

For Banrural, check the product page’s charges and commissions as well as the simulator’s exclusions before accepting a quotation. Do not treat a simulator result as the total cost of borrowing.

Common Application Mistakes to Avoid

Use these as preparation checks:

  • Applying without confirming which applicant category and registration requirements apply.
  • Submitting figures that contradict one another.
  • Assuming that a tax or employment-related document is required, or unnecessary, without asking the lender.
  • Describing the business without explaining the investment and expected repayment cash flow.
  • Requesting an amount without checking it against the business’s repayment capacity.
  • Failing to review your credit record; see how to check your SIB credit history.
  • Assuming that a proposed guarantee will be accepted without confirmation.

Before Applying: Get Ready

Confirm the lender’s requirements before paying for paperwork. Ask an accountant to review figures you do not understand, review your credit record, organize business banking records and prepare a clear investment plan with realistic numbers.

Shortlist lenders and ask for formal quotations. If you also need an account, see opening a bank account as a foreigner; account opening and loan eligibility should each be confirmed with the institution.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is MiPyme, and who administers it?

MiPyme refers to micro, small and medium-sized enterprises. MINECO’s financial support sheet describes a second-tier lending program: the ministry finances participating financial-service entities rather than lending directly to business owners. Ask MINECO which intermediaries and conditions are currently available.

How should I approach CHN or Banrural about a business loan?

For business financing, ask the institution about its specific product. Banrural publishes Crédito Amigo Microempresario requirements for individual applicants and a separate list for individuals required to keep accounts. Confirm CHN’s current business-loan products directly before applying.

What is CONADI?

CONADI is the Consejo Nacional para la Atención de las Personas con Discapacidad, Guatemala’s council for persons with disabilities. Its inclusive employment and entrepreneurship fair brought together entrepreneurs with disabilities, employers and organizations. Ask CONADI directly about current entrepreneurship support.

Does my business need to be formally registered to apply for an entrepreneurship loan?

Use the requirements for the specific product and applicant category. Banrural’s Crédito Amigo Microempresario list for individuals asks for DPI, NIT, a water or electricity bill, and an investment plan or quotation. Its separate list for individuals required to keep accounts asks for DPI, NIT, a water or electricity bill, Patente de Comercio, cash flow, and an investment plan or project.

How much can I borrow as a microentrepreneur?

MINECO’s financial support sheet, whose filename identifies it as 2025, lists ceilings of Q250 mil for a microenterprise, Q500 mil for a small enterprise and Q1.5 millones for a medium-sized enterprise. These are the sheet’s figures, not a current loan offer or approval guarantee. Confirm current limits with the participating intermediary.

What interest rates apply to entrepreneurship loans?

Ask each lender for a written quotation showing its interest rate, term, fees, required guarantees and total repayment. Do not choose a lender on the assumption that its institutional category guarantees a lower rate.

What should I include in a useful business plan?

As a preparation checklist, describe your experience, product or service, market, competitors, operations, financial projections, intended use of the loan and repayment cash flow. Ask the lender which format and supporting documents it requires. Banrural’s microenterprise requirements specifically include an investment plan or quotation for individuals, or an investment plan or project and cash flow for individuals required to keep accounts.
