For surf, INGUAT identifies El Paredón’s consistent waves; for swimming, its beach guide says the water at Caribbean beaches such as Playa Blanca tends to be calmer, while warning of strong waves and currents at El Paredón and parts of Monterrico. None of those descriptions establishes safe conditions on your travel day. For an overnight Pacific trip, the Airbnb asking-rate sample recorded 17 October 2026 has a US$332.86 nightly median for 17–19 November 2026, across mixed accommodation types and party sizes rather than hotel rooms alone.

Quick summary

  • Surf: El Paredón has consistent waves, with an official warning about strong waves and currents.
  • Swimming: INGUAT’s beach guide says Playa Blanca’s waters tend to be calmer; that is not a live swimming clearance.

  • Access: Atitrans serves Monterrico and El Paredón from Antigua. Playa Blanca and Punta de Manabique involve boat travel.

The official pages checked do not establish beach-specific swimming classifications or access fares for Sipacate, Puerto San José/Likin or Champerico, so they are not rated here. We found no official destination page for Playa Punta de Palma, so it is not covered.

Pacific: surf and volcanic sand

El Paredón has a clear surf identity in INGUAT’s description, but that does not make it a swimming beach for every visitor. The same authority warns about strong waves and currents there. Its destination guide attributes the dark sand to volcanic sediments carried by rivers and sedimentary currents. See the El Paredón surf guide for that activity.

Monterrico’s black volcanic sand is also documented by INGUAT. Its warning applies to some parts of the beach, rather than declaring every stretch identical. Sand colour does not answer the swimming question; local conditions and lifeguard instructions still matter.

Atitrans access from Antigua

Atitrans’ Monterrico page, checked 25 October 2026, lists Friday, Saturday, Sunday availability and an approximately 3 hours journey. Its headline and booking control show 09:00 AM, while its descriptive text says 08:00 AM. Confirm the departure directly with Atitrans before arranging your pickup. The Antigua to Monterrico route guide covers the journey separately.

For El Paredón, Atitrans’ page, checked 25 October 2026, lists Every Day, 09:00 AM | 14:00 hrs and 3 hours. A booking section names Super 24 El Paredon as the drop-off place, while the headline destination field also mentions a hotel or address. Confirm the actual drop-off for your booking; see Antigua to El Paredón.

Both pages display starting amounts with a dollar symbol, but do not explicitly identify the currency code or the price basis beside those amounts. They also do not establish tariff-validity dates. Obtain a currency-labelled quote for your party rather than treating those displays as confirmed per-person fares.

Caribbean: Playa Blanca versus Punta de Manabique

INGUAT’s beach guide says Playa Blanca’s waters tend to be calmer and more pleasant for swimming. Its destination page identifies white sand and boat access. This is a general description of the destination, not a current assessment of currents or bathing-water quality.

Happy Fish Travel, checked 25 October 2026, lists its combined boat tour at Q100.00 per person shared, or Q900.00 for a private tour for 1 to 8 people. It excludes Q60.00 per person in tourist-site entries. The operator gives 09:30 am departure and 04:00 pm return, with Siete Altares, Río Cocolí and Playa Blanca on the route. Those amounts describe the combined tour and excluded entries, not a standalone Playa Blanca admission tariff. The Siete Altares guide covers that separate stop.

Punta de Manabique has a different access commitment. INGUAT names Puerto Barrios as the main starting point and gives a usual boat journey of 1.5 to 2.5 hours, depending on sea conditions, boat type and exact destination. Departures may depend on weather and local boat availability. The access description does not establish a swimming or rip-current rating, and the INGUAT destination page we read does not give a boat fare.

Reading marine warnings before a beach visit

INSIVUMEH says its wave forecast is updated daily at 7:30 am. It also warns that individual waves can be significantly higher than the reported significant wave height, and that modelled conditions can differ from observations because of atmospheric variability and local events.

The bulletin available in the evidence checked on 25 October 2026 was dated 18 October 2026 at 06:00. Its forecast windows were already past. It is not a warning for your travel date or a beach swimming clearance; check the issue date as well as the location when opening a bulletin.

In its historical notice about a possible increase in waves, CONRED advised staying out of the sea near high tide and following local authorities’ instructions. Its Holy Week prevention guidance also calls for observing recommended sea-entry hours, sunscreen, a hat or cap, hydration and avoiding prolonged sun exposure. That paragraph does not publish universal safe swimming hours.

IGSS’ 2026 Holy Week announcement advised swimming in areas with lifeguards and following their instructions. It does not establish year-round coverage. The Holy Week beach safety guide keeps the holiday operation separate from everyday beach conditions.

What the Pacific Airbnb median can tell you

Guatemala Life’s Airbnb asking-rate sample was recorded 17 October 2026 for 17–19 November 2026, a 2-night weekday stay. The Pacific coast group contains 288 listings, of which 287 have prices, with a US$332.86 nightly median.

This is a capped sample of search results still available for those dates. The searches used 2 adults for accommodation sleeping up to four, and 6 or 12 adults only for larger homes absent from the smaller-party search. Large homes are over-represented, and a promotion Airbnb displays may already be included in the nightly rate. These are asking rates rather than booked rates; the regional median does not establish the price of a hotel room or an equivalent property in each beach town. For the accommodation decision, see where to stay in Monterrico.
