Antigua Guatemala sits at 1,500 m inside BirdLife International’s Antigua Guatemala Important Bird Area (IBA GT016), and Cayaya Birding says the birding sites around it are within a 15-minute to 1.5-hour drive of Antigua or Guatemala City. On eBird (data read 1 Nov 2026) the Finca El Pilar general-area hotspot, 2 km southeast of the central park, has the longest list in Sacatepéquez: 306 species on 2,703 checklists. Cerro de la Cruz above town has 220 species, the Senderos de Alux park on Cerro Alux 218, and Rincón Suizo near Tecpán 226, where a Pink-headed Warbler was logged on 27 October 2026.

This page is the decision a visiting birder makes for one day out of Antigua: which site, how far, what eBird says has been seen there, whether you can walk in on your own, and what a guide costs. Every count comes from eBird’s hotspot pages and every price from the operator’s own page (for Guatemala Nature, its WeTravel listing), all read on 1 November 2026 (UTC). For Guatemala’s national birding sites (the Biotopo del Quetzal, Los Tarrales, Tikal, Lake Atitlán) see our Guatemala birding guide.

The sites compared

eBird counts are all-time totals for each hotspot (eBird checklist data as of 1 November 2026). The Finca El Pilar row is eBird’s general-area hotspot, which includes its child hotspots for the feeders, the cabins and the trails; eBird’s sub-hotspot counts overlap, so they cannot be added together. Distances are as each source states them.

On 1 November 2026 the Plan Your Visit section of eBird’s pages for El Pilar, Senderos Alux and Chichavac read “Nothing added yet for this hotspot”, so eBird gives no access details for those three.

Why the hills around Antigua

Cayaya Birding describes the valley of Antigua as rather dry: the hillsides carry mainly pine-oak and arid forest, and only some hilltops get enough humidity for cloud forest. Some forests between 1,500 and 2,600 m are a short drive from town, and it names Finca El Pilar, Finca Filadelfia and Cerro Alux as places to see the regional endemics. Its Birding Antigua Guatemala site says “More than 400 bird species occur within day trip distance from Antigua”, and that the landscape above 500 m belongs to the North Central American Highlands Endemic Bird Area (EBA 018).

BirdLife designated the Antigua Guatemala IBA in 2009 as one of 21 terrestrial IBAs in Guatemala, on a consultancy by Knut Eisermann and Claudia Avendaño, the founders of Cayaya Birding. Their IBA page says it qualified on populations of globally threatened species (Highland Guan, Pink-headed Warbler, Golden-cheeked Warbler, Azure-rumped Tanager), on most of the EBA 018 endemics, and on more than 33% of the bird species restricted to the Sierra Madre biome.

For a one-day benchmark, the 3 January 2016 Christmas Bird Count at El Pilar, Filadelfia and Cerro Alux found 120 species (Cayaya’s CBC report); the details are on our Finca El Pilar page.

Finca El Pilar: the feeders and the longest list

Forest canopy above a trail railing at Finca El Pilar

Finca El Pilar, near Antigua Guatemala, 2024.

Cayaya describes Finca El Pilar as a private preserve from 1,600 to 2,400 m, with hummingbird feeders at the lower entrance to its nature trail. On eBird (read 1 Nov 2026) its general-area hotspot has the longest list in Sacatepéquez, 306 species on 2,703 checklists.

Trails, elevations, the feeder species, recent eBird records and the guided options are on our Finca El Pilar page.

Cerro de la Cruz and El Hato

Motmot Treks describes Cerro de la Cruz as just above Antigua. Its eBird hotspot has 220 species on 549 checklists (eBird data, read 1 Nov 2026), which puts it third in Sacatepéquez by species behind the El Pilar and centro histórico hotspots if you leave out El Pilar’s sub-hotspots. Motmot runs a half-day there (US$130 for a group of 2). Access and safety notes are on our Cerro de la Cruz hiking page.

El Hato, which Motmot describes as near Antigua, is on eBird as El Hato, hotel y hacienda Earth Lodge: 164 species, 118 checklists. Motmot sells a half-day there at US$140 for two. Its tour page lists Rufous Sabrewing, Guatemalan Flicker and Green-throated Mountain-gem among the Mesoamerican endemics you may see. None of the sources we read sets out walk-in access to the Earth Lodge grounds; see our Earth Lodge page for day visits.

Finca Filadelfia

Cayaya puts Finca Filadelfia in Jocotenango, 2 km north of Antigua, from 1,500 to 2,430 m, with patches of pine-oak, pine and cloud forest. It says the finca moves visitors up in its own Unimog trucks, that the drive from the base to the highest point takes about 45 minutes, and that the trail through the cloud forest and pine-oak forest is about 2 km long. On eBird the Filadelfia hotspot has 200 species on 146 checklists; the Rufous Sabrewing was last logged there on 6 November 2019 and the Ocellated Quail on 4 March 2019, and the Pink-headed Warbler is not on the main hotspot’s list (its sub-hotspots were not checked). What we could and could not confirm about the farm’s current tours and prices is on our Finca Filadelfia page.

Cerro Alux: the reserve between Antigua and Guatemala City

The Reserva Forestal Protectora de Manantiales Cordillera Alux was declared a protected area by Decreto 41-97 of the Congress on 29 May 1997 (AGN, page dated 27 September 2023), with CONAP coordinating its administration (AGN, 23 November 2022). Prensa Libre (3 July 2016) gave its size as 5,372 hectares across Santiago and San Lucas Sacatepéquez in Sacatepéquez and Mixco, San Juan and San Pedro Sacatepéquez in the department of Guatemala, with 27 streams and 65 springs, and, citing CONAP, up to 21.8 million cubic metres of water a year. CONAP calls it the main recharge zone of the Guatemala City valley, in a post quoted by AGN. AGN (2023) reported that its Consejo Asesor is made up of the municipalities of San Pedro Sacatepéquez, San Lucas Sacatepéquez, Santiago Sacatepéquez, Mixco and San Juan Sacatepéquez, and also of the governors of Guatemala and Sacatepéquez, Copresam and the vice-minister of Sustainable Development of the Ministry of Energy and Mines.

For birders the way in is the Parque Ecológico Senderos de Alux, which Prensa Libre (12 June 2016) said covers 1.09% of the reserve and is run by the Municipalidad de San Lucas Sacatepéquez. AGN’s directions: take the Inter-American Highway towards Antigua and turn right at km 26.2, before San Lucas Sacatepéquez; a sign marks the road, and the entrance is 1.3 km from the highway. AGN counted 35 interpretive trails. Cayaya puts it within 30 minutes of Antigua or Guatemala City, describes pine-oak forest at 2,200 m with a loop trail, and lists Rufous-browed Wren, Blue-and-white Mockingbird, Blue-throated Motmot, Black-capped Swallow, Rufous-collared Robin and, with luck, Singing Quail.

eBird data, read 1 Nov 2026, for the Senderos Alux hotspot: 218 species, 359 checklists, 229 eBirders; October 2026 had 37 species on 17 checklists. Blue-throated Motmot and Blue-and-white Mockingbird were last logged on 16 October 2026, Rufous-browed Wren on 20 October 2026, Singing Quail on 1 March 2023. The Pink-headed Warbler is not on the list. Prensa Libre reported 53 bird species for the whole reserve in 2016; the eBird list for this one park hotspot has 218.

Fee and hours: what each press source said. INGUAT’s Sello Q listing for the park returned a page-not-found error (checked 1 November 2026), and we found no current official tariff. The three press versions disagree:

La Hora’s line reads “Los precios son de Q30.00 por persona, incluye entrada al parque y camping” (prices are Q30 per person, park entry and camping included). Call before you go.

Two other Cerro Alux sites come up on Motmot Treks’ tour pages. Finca San Rafael de las Hortensias is on the old road between Mixco and San Lucas Sacatepéquez; Motmot says the finca can only be reached by private car and that “Access to the trails costs Q10 per person, included in the price”. eBird has a Finca Las Hortencias hotspot in the Alux group, apparently the same finca: 117 species on 50 checklists. El Manzanillo is a trail on the slopes of Cerro Alux, where Motmot runs a half-day from Antigua or Guatemala City.

Tecpán and the Pink-headed Warbler

Of the hotspots we checked, the recent Pink-headed Warbler records are near Tecpán. Motmot Treks says Tecpán is about an hour’s drive from Antigua each way. On eBird (read 1 Nov 2026) Rincón Suizo has 226 species on 1,157 checklists and Finca Caleras Chichavac 209 on 659. The record dates, site access, range, status and guided options are on our Pink-headed Warbler page; the bus and road options are on Antigua to Iximché and the town on Tecpán.

Guided or on your own

What the sources say about going without a guide:

  • Finca El Pilar: Cayaya says “It opens the 365 days of the year from 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM” and that you can start birding from the parking lot, walk by the pools and go straight to the coffee plantation after the small houses, from where the trail is well marked. The page is undated, and no current official or operator source we read publishes the gate fee.
  • Rincón Suizo: open to birders on its trails, with parking at the restaurant (Cayaya). No fee or hours in any source we read.
  • Senderos de Alux: the press items above describe set days, hours and an entry fee; none is confirmed as current, and none is official.
  • Finca Las Hortencias: trail access Q10 per person, private car only (Motmot).

Cayaya’s El Pilar page also warns that forest birding can be challenging, with some quiet days without much movement. Motmot says it provides binoculars for every participant and a spotting scope shared within the group. The Motmot, Guatemala Nature, Cayaya day-tour and Cayaya El Pilar walk prices in the table below all include the site entrance.

Motmot calls its launch offer 10% off every trip booked by 31 December 2026; the table shows the offer prices its pages display, which do not all work out to exactly 10% off the list price, so confirm the price when you book. On the other six Motmot tours in the table, transport from your hotel is an optional add-on, with pickup 30 minutes before the start, and groups larger than four are asked to contact Motmot directly. The WeTravel page shows the price as $175 without saying, in the text we captured, whether it is per person or per booking.

Cayaya’s two sites publish two different starting prices (US$74 per person in a group of 4 for day tours, US$40 per person on the Antigua site), so ask which one applies to your plan.

When to go and what time

  • Season: “Any time of year”, on Cayaya’s Antigua, El Pilar, Filadelfia and Cerro Alux pages. Its Antigua page adds that smoke from fires for preparing corn fields can hide the volcanoes from February to April, but in those months “bird activity is tremendous, because it is nesting season”.
  • Migrants: Cayaya’s Birds of Antigua page says large mixed flocks of warblers and vireos can be seen from September to April or May, with Townsend’s, Wilson’s, Tennessee and Black-and-white among the commonest wintering warblers.
  • Time of day: Cayaya’s half-day tours run from sunrise (5 to 6 a.m.) to mid-day; Motmot’s morning slots start at 7:00 (6:30 at El Manzanillo, 6:00 for Tecpán) and its afternoon slots at 14:00. Prensa Libre (2016) wrote that Cerro Alux suits birdwatching especially in the first hours of the morning or at dusk.

Where to stay

Cayaya calls Antigua a perfect base for birding day trips to nearby areas. For a dawn start at Rincón Suizo, Cayaya notes hotels in the town of Tecpán.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which birding sites are closest to Antigua Guatemala?

Cayaya Birding puts Finca El Pilar 2 km southeast of Antigua’s central park, a 10-minute drive (Motmot Treks says 15 minutes), and Finca Filadelfia 2 km north, in Jocotenango. Motmot describes Cerro de la Cruz as just above Antigua. The town itself is an eBird hotspot: Antigua Guatemala centro histórico had 230 species on 824 checklists (eBird data, read 1 Nov 2026).

How much does a guided birding tour from Antigua cost?

As each operator publishes it (read 1 November 2026): Cayaya Birding’s birding walk at Finca El Pilar starts at US$40 per person for 3 participants, entrance fee included, no transport; its private day tours start at US$74 per person in a group of 4, with transport and hotel pickup. Motmot Treks prices half-days for a group of 2: US$130 Cerro de la Cruz, US$140 El Hato, US$156 Finca El Pilar, US$320 Tecpán with transport and breakfast, with lower launch-offer prices for trips booked by 31 December 2026. Guatemala Nature’s evening owling trip at El Pilar is listed at $175 on its WeTravel booking page.

Can I go birding at Finca El Pilar without a guide?

Cayaya Birding’s El Pilar page says the finca opens 365 days a year from 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM (the page is undated) and that the nature trail is well marked from the coffee plantation past the pools, starting from the parking lot. No current official or operator source we read on 1 November 2026 publishes the gate fee; the Cayaya walk and the Motmot tour both include the entrance in their price.

Where can I see the Pink-headed Warbler on a day trip from Antigua?

Of the five hotspots whose eBird bird lists we read on 1 November 2026, the most recent records are near Tecpán: 4 birds at Restaurante Rincón Suizo on 27 October 2026 and 5 at Finca Caleras Chichavac on 20 October 2026. Motmot Treks says Tecpán is about an hour’s drive from Antigua each way. At Finca El Pilar the last eBird record is 25 April 2017, and the species is not on the main Finca Filadelfia hotspot list (its sub-hotspots were not checked) or the Senderos de Alux list.

How much is the entrance to Senderos de Alux (Cerro Alux)?

We found no current official tariff (checked 1 November 2026). The press has printed three different versions: Prensa Libre (12 June 2016) Q10 adults and Q5 children under 12, Tuesday to Sunday 8:00-16:00; AGN (page dated 15 April 2021) Tuesday to Sunday 8:00-15:00, no fee given; La Hora (26 April 2024) Q30 per person including park entry and camping, Tuesday to Sunday 8:00-18:00.

When is the best time of year for birding near Antigua?

Cayaya Birding answers any time of year. It adds that smoke from fires set to prepare corn fields can spoil the volcano views from February to April, but that bird activity is high in those months because it is nesting season. Its sister site says large mixed flocks of migrant warblers and vireos can be seen from September to April or May.
