This page compares what EEGSA and Energuate ask for to connect a new metered electricity service to a home or business in Guatemala. For tariffs and a bill calculator, see Guatemala electricity cost.

Everything here comes from each distributor’s official pages and forms, checked 21 October 2026. Neither distributor gives the quetzal amount of the deposit or the contribution on those pages, so this page gives no figures.

If a meter already exists and you only want it in your name, that is a different procedure: change the name on an electricity account.

Energuate: requirements by distance to the pole

Energuate sorts the procedure by the distance between the connection point and the nearest pole. It also asks you to bring the internal wiring up to its Normas Técnicas de Instalación (installation standards). If you already have Energuate services, your payments must be up to date.

Distance to poleWhat Energuate asks forPublished costPublished deadline
0 to 40 metresSigned contract, DPI, neighbour’s NIS, contact details and NIT, photos, 120V/240VThe request is freeUp to 28 days from the request
41 to 200 metresSame steps, then a feasibility studyAporte Financiero Reembolsable (AFR), refunded as a credit on the first billUp to 90 days from paying the AFR
Over 200 metresRequest at a commercial office, copy of DPI or passport, neighbour’s NIS or bill, phone and photoStudy cost and project budget, notified by EnerguateNot given on that Energuate page

Steps for 0 to 40 metres

  1. Request the service at an Oficina Comercial or through a digital channel.
  2. Fill in and sign the electricity supply contract.
  3. Show your DPI.
  4. Give the NIS (Número de Identificación de Suministro, the supply ID) from your nearest neighbour’s bill, plus your exact address and landmarks.
  5. Update your phone numbers, email and NIT.
  6. Hand in photos, digital or printed, of where the meter will go and of the house front.
  7. State the voltage you need: 120V/240V.

Energuate’s own words: “La solicitud no tiene ningún costo” (the request has no cost). The meter is installed within 28 days of the request at most.

41 to 200 metres: the refundable contribution

The steps are the same; Energuate accepts the NIS or a photocopy of the neighbour’s bill. It then runs a feasibility study. If the connection is feasible, Energuate contacts you to pay the Aporte Financiero Reembolsable (AFR) and bring any documents requested at the site visit.

Energuate defines the AFR as the payment a new user makes for the network extension, when the pole-to-house distance is no more than 200 metres. The amount comes back on your first bill as a credit. The meter is installed within 90 days of the payment at most.

Over 200 metres

This request is handled only at commercial offices. If the project serves several applicants, the names and DPI numbers of all of them are submitted. Energuate runs an engineering study, tells you its cost, designs the network and then gives you the total budget for the work.

Energuate special requirements

CaseDocuments
The service cable crosses another propertyRight-of-way permit authenticated by a lawyer, in original, and a copy of the signer’s DPI
The person filing is not the ownerLetter authenticated by a lawyer in which the owner authorises the bearer, and a copy of the bearer’s DPI
In a company’s nameCopies of the commercial and company registration (patente de comercio y de sociedad), the legal representative’s appointment, the representative’s DPI and an RTU no more than 6 months old

If a meter already existed at the address, Energuate requires it to have no debt before connecting the new supply.

EEGSA: requirements for new connections

EEGSA lets you request a new-service contract online. Its requirements sheet for new connections asks for the following when the service is in the property owner’s name:

  1. Lista verificable para conexiones nuevas, a free form available through all its service channels.
  2. Proof of ownership: deed, purchase contract, a subdivider’s letter or a current lease. It must show the cadastral address; if it does not, add the original document from the municipal cadastre department.
  3. Copy of the DPI (current, or proof of replacement) of the person who will be EEGSA’s customer.
  4. Contract-holder details: NIT, landline, mobile, email and billing address if different.
  5. The deposit. The sheet words it as “Pagar el valor del depósito correspondiente” (pay the corresponding deposit).

If someone else signs the contract, EEGSA asks for an authorisation letter from the future customer and a copy of the signer’s DPI. For companies it asks for the current appointment of the legal representative and the representative’s DPI.

EEGSA also suggests marking the service connection with metal or ceramic numbers or oil paint, bringing a full photo of it, and giving the gatehouse access code if there is one. Photocopies must be single-sided, not duplex.

EEGSA with a pole over 40 metres away

If the pole is more than 40 metres away, EEGSA says you request a line extension (extensión de líneas). Its online-services page says it confirms within 10 days so you can make the payment. EEGSA asks you to take into consideration: the nearest pole must be under 200 metres; demand over 11 kW; service in an alley (callejón); three-phase service. For 6 or more services at one property it uses a line extension for a multiple-meter board. For distances over 200 metres or underground projects it has a separate line-extension request, and EEGSA says those services must pay for the excess network.

EEGSA does not use the refundable contribution

On its page of commitments as a distributor, EEGSA writes: “En cuanto a los aportes reembolsables, es importante aclarar que dicha figura no es utilizada por esta distribuidora” (it does not use refundable contributions). That is a concrete difference from Energuate.

EEGSA cites Article 68 of the General Electricity Law regulations (Reglamento de la Ley General de Electricidad). Clause a) sets a maximum of 28 days for a service that needs no network extension. Clause b) sets a maximum of 3 months if it does. Energuate publishes the same two deadlines, 28 days and 3 months, on its new-service page.
