September 2027 combines Independence Day, a paid holiday under Article 127, with Guatemala’s wettest weeks. Independence Day falls on Wednesday 15 September and is not moved to a Monday; the torch runs fill roads on Tuesday 14th; in 2026, Quetzaltenango’s Xelafer programme put its busiest days in the same week. In our 1996-2025 reanalysis series September brings 18-19% of the year’s rain to Antigua, Guatemala City and Lake Atitlán, and it was the least-visited month in INGUAT’s 2025 count.

For the year at a glance, see the best time to visit Guatemala by month; for the day itself, the Independence Day guide has the programme, history and what is open.

TL;DR: Wed 15 Sep 2027 is a paid holiday under Article 127 and stays on the Wednesday (Decreto 19-2018 exempts it from the Monday shift). Tue 14 Sep is not a holiday but is torch-run day. Xelafer 2027 programme not in the sources checked; the 2026 programme was set for 10-19 September. One of the two wettest months, the Atlantic hurricane peak is 10 September, and INGUAT’s 2025 count put September last for visitors.

The holiday rule. Article 127 of the Labour Code lists 15 September among private-sector paid holidays. Decreto 19-2018, which moves some holidays to Monday, names quince de septiembre among the days it does not apply to, so the 2027 holiday stays on Wednesday 15 September. The full list is on Guatemala holidays 2027.

The 2026 calendar. In August 2026 the departmental governor of Guatemala, Mauricio Benard, set out the calendar reported by Diario de Centro América: the Fuego Patrio to be lit on 1 September; torches from the four cardinal points to enter the capital on 2 September, one of them heading on to Cuilapa and Jalpatagua; the Central American Torch of Peace and Liberty to be handed to El Salvador the next day; and the launch of the 15 September parade with the commanders of 131 bands. For 14 September the capital’s torch-lighting was to be split across five sites, Erick Barrondo park, the Roosevelt fields, Campo de Marte, the Municipalidad de Guatemala and the zona 18 auxiliary mayor’s office at Los Álamos, scheduled to open 6:00 to 18:00, with Emetra coordinating routes. Treat that as the 2026 pattern; the 2027 calendar was not in the sources checked as of 4 November 2026.

Torch relays travel by road, so allow extra time if you drive that week. The road closures page and the Independence Day guide carry the current year’s details.

Xelafer in Quetzaltenango

Prensa Libre described Xelafer 2026 as the 142nd year of the Feria Centroamericana de Independencia de Quetzaltenango. It reported that activities began on 10 September 2026 with the primary-school civic parade from Parque Benito Juárez to the Redondel Tecún Umán, and that the agenda would intensify from 13 to 19 September, with 15 September, the Grito de Independencia and the secondary-school parade, as one of the main days. For the fair’s history and the department’s other ferias, see Quetzaltenango ferias and the September ferias calendar.

The wettest weeks: weather and storms

INSIVUMEH’s 2018 climate study says heavy rain returns after the canícula to complete the season in September and October, and that it is normal for the intertropical convergence zone to sit near Guatemala in September and for easterly waves to pass during the rainy season. Its worked example is the extreme rain of 18 September 2017, measured at Mazatenango, which it tied to both. The table uses September values from our parent guide’s 1996-2025 Open-Meteo ERA5 reanalysis (°C, °F in brackets). Historical model averages, not a forecast.

DestinationSeptember high/lowShare of the year’s rain
Antigua (1,540 m)24/16 (75/61)19%
Guatemala City—18%
Lake Atitlán, Panajachel (1,580 m)22/17 (72/63)18%
Xela (2,360 m)19/13 (65/55)16%
Tikal (300 m)31/23 (88/73)16%
Flores—17%
Semuc Champey (Lanquín)—11%
Livingston (sea level)30/24 (85/76)11%
Monterrico (sea level)29/24 (84/76)19%

The parent guide’s temperature table does not cover Guatemala City, Flores or Semuc Champey. September is Monterrico’s wettest month on this measure (19%) and, level with June, Antigua’s. INSIVUMEH counted 39 easterly waves in the 2026 rainy season by 16 September, five of them in September; see tropical waves for how they bring rain.

Storms. The US National Hurricane Center gives 10 September as the peak of the Atlantic hurricane season, with most activity between mid-August and mid-October; the eastern Pacific season also runs to 30 November. Follow the hurricane tracker for active systems and the CONRED alert level for national warnings.

Crowds

INGUAT counted 220,474 non-resident visitors in September 2025, twelfth of twelve months, against 290,521 in August. That is a 2025 count, not a 2027 forecast.
