Xelafer 2026: the Central American Independence Fair

If you are searching for “the Xela fair,” you almost certainly mean Xelafer — and it is not the city’s patron saint festival. Quetzaltenango has two separate fairs and people book the wrong week every year:

Xelafer is the largest fair in the western highlands. It dates to 1884, when the municipal authorities of Quetzaltenango asked President Justo Rufino Barrios for permission and he granted it by Decreto Gubernativo on 17 June 1884; the event was originally set for 14-17 September each year and was renamed the Feria Centroamericana on 9 July 1886 (Prensa Libre hemeroteca). That makes 2026 the 142nd edition.

In June 2026 the Quetzaltenango municipal council approved a Q6.5 million budget for it — Q1 million more than the Q5.5 million spent in 2025 — and set up 16 commissions covering the programme, the parades, the floats, the protocol acts and the commercial space (La Prensa de Occidente, 18 June 2026).

The four official parades — confirmed

Xelafer 2026 opens on Thursday 10 September with the primary-school inaugural parade. The Comisión de Desfiles y Carrozas confirmed four official parades (La Voz de Xela, 1 September 2026):

2026 dateParadeProtocolStep-offRoute

15 SepSecondary parade (nivel medio)7:308:00Parque Benito Juárez → Monumento a Tecún Umán
16 SepFloat parade (carrozas)—9:00Avenida La Independencia → Monumento a Tecún Umán

Two more dated events sit between them: the intercultural parade on 12 September, and the informal student processions on the afternoon and night of 14 September, running up 12 avenida to Parque Centro América.

How big it actually is

13,750 students from 100 public and private schools across 12 education districts march in the three school parades. Each level marches to its own theme (Infobae, 4 September 2026):

ParadeStudentsSchoolsTheme

Pre-primary (11 Sep)3,76838Mundo de fantasía
Secondary (15 Sep)4,13027Valores, fortaleciendo para un mejor futuro

Pageants and surrounding events

The pageant calendar comes from the programme La Voz de Xela published on 28 August 2026, which is earlier than the parade schedule above and may still move — confirm before you build a trip around any one of these:

2026 dateEvent
9 SepPresentation of the national and international queens
11 SepElection of the Reina Internacional
13 SepElection of the Reina Nacional
14 SepGrito de Independencia

Practical note for visitors. The parades all step off from Parque Benito Juárez and end at the Monumento a Tecún Umán or Plaza Japón, so the centre closes to traffic on those mornings. Xela sits at roughly 2,330 m and September is inside the rainy season — parades run in the morning for a reason. Book accommodation well ahead: this is the single busiest week of the year in the city.

Two 2025 details from the Diario de Centro América, the official gazette: the Grito de Independencia was scheduled for midnight on 14 September, and it gave a price of five quetzales, with free entry for children under 7, for the area of food stalls, recreation and mechanical rides (Diario de Centro America). We did not find a published 2026 price, so we give none.
