If you live in the United States and cannot get into your RENAP ePortal account, the official RENAP access guide (eportal.renap.gob.gt/guiadeacceso) gives you two routes: an online password reset that depends on your registered email, and an in-person enrolment at the nearest Guatemalan consulate when the online route fails. This page sets out what RENAP says, word for word where it matters, and marks what the guide does not say.
Quick summary
- Online reset: RENAP says that if you forgot your password, to get a new one you “debe presionar el botón “Recuperar Contraseña””, then enter your CUI and the email you registered with.
- Registered email is required: the reset form asks for “el correo electrónico con el que se registró el usuario”. The reset link arrives by email.
- Consulate fallback: RENAP says that when a user cannot be created or a password cannot be recovered, Guatemalans abroad “deberan de apersonarse al consulado más cercano para realizar un enrolamiento”.
- No email or phone on file: ePortal shows a message telling you to go to a RENAP office or the nearest consulate “para proporcionar sus datos”.
- Not in the guide: reset-link expiry, email delivery time, lockout duration, phone-only recovery, remote change of an inaccessible email, fees, and the documents for consular enrolment.
Which situation are you in?
| Your situation | What the RENAP access guide says | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| Forgot password, still have the registered email | Use the Recuperar Contraseña button; enter CUI without spaces and the registered email; a reset link is emailed | Reset online (steps below) |
| Lost access to the registered email | Recovery is described only through the registered email; abroad, when the password cannot be recovered, enrol at the nearest consulate | Contact your consulate |
| ePortal says no email or phone number is registered | Go to a RENAP office or the nearest consulate to provide your data | Contact your consulate |
| Security code entered wrong on the third attempt | After the third wrong code the system returns to the initial screen | You are back at the initial screen |
Reset your password online (registered email still works)
These are the steps in RENAP’s ePortal access guide:
- Press Recuperar Contraseña. RENAP says that if you forgot your password, to get a new one you “debe presionar el botón “Recuperar Contraseña””.
- Fill in the form and press Enviar. RENAP says a form appears “en el cual se debe llenar el campo de CUI con todos los números sin espacios y el correo electrónico con el que se registró el usuario”. Type every digit of the CUI, with no spaces.
- Open the email. RENAP says “Llegará un correo electrónico indicando un enlace para restablecer la contraseña” (an email arrives with a link to reset the password).
- Set the new password. RENAP’s instruction is “Ingrese la nueva contraseña, el código captcha y presione el botón Confirmar” (enter the new password and the captcha code, then press Confirmar).
The guide does not say how long the reset link stays valid or how long the email takes to arrive. Its stated fallback for Guatemalans abroad who cannot recover a password is the consulate (next section).
If you do not know your CUI, see our CUI and NIT lookup guide.
When you cannot recover the account: consular enrolment
RENAP’s guide is direct on this point: “En los casos en que no se pueda crear un usuario o recuperar contraseña, los guatemaltecos que se encuentren en el extranjero deberan de apersonarse al consulado más cercano para realizar un enrolamiento”. In English: if you are abroad and cannot create a user or recover your password, you must go in person to the nearest consulate for an enrolment.
This covers the cases where the online reset cannot work for you, such as when you no longer control the email registered on the account. The guide does not describe any way to change that email remotely, and it does not describe recovery by phone alone.
What the guide does not state about the consular enrolment:
- any fee
- which documents to bring
- whether biometrics are taken
- whether you need an appointment
Ask your consulate about each of these before you travel. To find yours, use the consulate finder; for booking, see how to schedule a Guatemalan consulate appointment in the USA.
Message: no email or phone number registered
If you try to create an ePortal user and RENAP has no contact data for you, the system shows this message: “¡Información! Por el momento no se puede crear el usuario, debido a que no se tiene registrado un correo electrónico o número de teléfono”. RENAP’s message then tells you to “apersónese a una oficina del RENAP o Consulado más cercano, para proporcionar sus datos” (go to a RENAP office or the nearest consulate to provide your data).
From the US, the nearest consulate is the practical option. The guide does not say what documents the consulate will ask for when you provide your data.
Security-code rules (these are not reset-link rules)
The RENAP guide also sets rules for a security code. This research ties them to the account-creation steps, not to the password-reset link:
- Time limit: RENAP says “El código de seguridad tendrá tiempo de vigencia de 2 minutos” (the security code is valid for 2 minutes).
- Attempts: RENAP says that on “el tercer intento de código de seguridad y este sea erróneo, el sistema regresará a la pantalla inicial” (on a third wrong code, the system returns to the initial screen).
The guide does not specify a lockout duration. A return to the initial screen is what RENAP documents for a third wrong code.
