USPS Priority Mail International is the only fully-transparent shipping option in the USA-to-Guatemala market. Unlike every diaspora courier we reviewed, USPS publishes full flat-rate pricing — $33.75 small, $61.80 medium, $75.15 large — and the rates are the same nationwide from ~31,000 US post offices. For anyone sending a 4-20 lb package without a casillero account, this is the comparison baseline against which every other courier should be measured.
Verification status: Fully verified. Flat-rate prices confirmed from USPS.com directly. Guatemala-specific weight-based rates available through USPS’s postage calculator. Transit time estimates cross-checked with USPS country guide and real-world Guatemalan postal system observations. Last verified April 2026.
Who writes this: We’re Guatemala Life, a Guatemala-based team. We observe USPS Priority Mail International packages arriving into Correos de Guatemala every week. The Guatemala-side reality (how the postal system handles final delivery, when tracking goes dark, what triggers SAT duty collection at the post office counter) is what we report firsthand. US-side USPS rates and rules come from USPS.com directly.
The trust advantage: USPS is the United States Postal Service, a federal government operator. You can’t get defrauded by a USPS “courier.” The rates are published. The tracking works up to the Guatemala handoff. If you’re uncertain about any diaspora courier, mailing at a US Post Office is the safest baseline.
Flat-rate pricing (verified April 2026 from USPS.com)
| Box size | Retail rate (counter) | Commercial Base (Click-N-Ship) | Weight limit | Dimensions |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Small flat-rate box | $33.75 | $32.66 | Up to 4 lb (international) | 8-5/8 × 5-3/8 × 1-5/8 in |
| Medium flat-rate box (1) | $61.80 | $59.69 | Up to 20 lb | 13-5/8 × 11-7/8 × 3-3/8 in |
| Medium flat-rate box (2) | $61.80 | $59.69 | Up to 20 lb | 11 × 8-1/2 × 5-1/2 in |
| Large flat-rate box | $75.15 | $73.24 | Up to 20 lb | 12 × 12 × 5-1/2 in |
Weight-based Priority Mail International: if your package is a non-flat-rate box, USPS charges by weight and Guatemala country group. Typical example: 10 lb package ≈ $85-$110. Use the USPS postage price calculator with destination country Guatemala to get your exact quote.
In Quetzales: at Q7.75/USD:

Transit time
| Stage | Time |
|---|---|
| US Post Office → USPS international gateway | 1-3 business days |
| USPS international gateway → Guatemala | 2-4 business days |
| Guatemala postal handoff → final delivery | 2-7 business days |
| USPS advertised total | 6-10 business days |
| Real-world typical total | 7-14 business days |
Important: the 6-10 day advertisement is the USPS side only. Real delivery at the recipient’s address depends on Correos de Guatemala’s schedule, which is often slower — especially in rural areas outside Guatemala City. Budget 14 business days for safety on any time-sensitive shipment.
What we see on the Guatemala side: USPS tracking goes dark when the package enters Correos de Guatemala, usually somewhere between “arrived at destination” and “out for delivery.” The package isn’t lost — it’s just that Correos’s tracking does not sync back to USPS in real time. If a box shows “arrived” but no delivery update after 5 days, don’t panic. Call Correos (+502 2279-5000) or check your local Correos office. The package is usually sitting there waiting for pickup or duty payment.
Flat-rate box break-even math (when USPS beats other couriers)
For a dense, heavy box that fits in the flat-rate dimensions, USPS is often the best deal:
| Weight | USPS Medium flat-rate | Equivalent per-lb rate | Beats… |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5 lb | $61.80 | $12.36 / lb | Only retail air (King Express Regular at $13) |
| 10 lb | $61.80 | $6.18 / lb | Retail air, most casillero |
| 15 lb | $61.80 | $4.12 / lb | Retail air, most casillero |
| 20 lb (max) | $61.80 | $3.09 / lb | Ties Quick Box USA Premium; beats King Regular |
The rule: USPS Medium flat-rate at 15-20 lb is the best deal in the market for a single dense box. Quick Box USA is cheaper per pound only if you ship over ~100 lb/year and are paying the $99 subscription. Below that threshold, USPS wins.
Prohibited and restricted items
USPS country page for Guatemala lists the following as prohibited or restricted:
Prohibited (will be rejected or seized):
- Firearms and ammunition
- Explosives, fireworks, flammable materials
- Perishable biological substances
- Live animals
- Alcoholic beverages over 24% alcohol
- Radioactive materials
- Counterfeit currency or goods
- Narcotics and controlled substances
- Human or animal remains
Restricted (require special paperwork or declaration):
- Lithium batteries (tight IATA rules)
- Beverages under 24% alcohol (limited quantity, declaration required)
- Prescription medicines (prescription copy required)
- Used clothing in commercial quantities (Guatemala restricts commercial used-clothing imports)
- Jewelry, gold, silver (declaration and insurance recommended)
- Plants and seeds (MAGA-OIRSA phytosanitary review)
Customs and duty reality on the Guatemala side
USPS does NOT pre-pay duty. On arrival in Guatemala, SAT reviews the customs declaration form (CN22 for packages under 4 lb, CN23 for heavier packages) and assesses duty.
- Declared value under ~$500 USD: often clears under simplified customs with no duty, especially for personal-use items.
- Declared value $500 and above: 12% IVA + DAI (0-20% depending on category). Electronics pay just the 12% IVA typically. Alcohol and vehicle parts pay higher DAI.
- Duty collection: the mail carrier collects at delivery, OR you pay at the Correos office when picking up.
Use our import duty calculator to estimate the tax on your specific shipment before sending.
Gotchas
- Declared value matters — fill the customs form accurately. Under-declaring risks seizure. Over-declaring triggers unnecessary duty. Declare the real replacement cost.
- Tracking goes dark in Guatemala. Expect 3-7 days of silence after the package enters Correos de Guatemala. This is normal, not a problem.
- Flat-rate box weight is strict: 4 lb small, 20 lb medium/large. If your package exceeds, USPS will re-weigh and charge retail Priority Mail rates instead — which can double the cost.
- Guatemala’s postal delivery is slower outside Guatemala City. If the recipient is in Quetzaltenango, Huehuetenango, Petén, or rural areas, expect an extra 3-5 days on last-mile delivery.
- “If Undeliverable” default is RETURN. USPS’s default if the recipient can’t be reached is return-to-sender — which costs the sender the return postage. Make sure the recipient address is correct and someone is available to receive.
- Customs forms must be filled in English OR Spanish. USPS accepts both. Spanish is often faster through Correos de Guatemala.
- Insurance is optional but cheap ($1-$5 extra). For packages over $100 value, add insurance. Claims for international lost packages take 30-90 days but USPS does pay on legitimate claims.
How USPS compares to the market
| Shipping option | Small pkg (4 lb) | Medium pkg (15 lb) | Large pkg (50 lb) | Transit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| USPS Priority Mail Int’l flat-rate | $33.75 (small) | $61.80 (medium) | N/A (max 20 lb) | 6-10 days |
| Quick Box USA Premium | $9 + $5 fee = ~$14 | $33.75 + $5 | $112.50 + $5 | 5-10 days |
| King Express Regular | $52 (3 lb min) | $195 | $650 | 15 days |
| King Express Flat Box 30×30×30 | $325 flat | $325 flat | $325 flat | Standard |
| DHL Express | $80-$150 | $150-$250 | $400-$600 | 2-5 days |
| FedEx Intl Priority | $70-$140 | $140-$240 | $380-$580 | 2-5 days |
USPS’s advantage: published rates, accessibility (~31,000 post offices), federal government trust, good value in the 4-20 lb dense-box window.
USPS’s disadvantage: tracking goes dark after entering Correos de Guatemala, slower than DHL/FedEx, slower than casillero air freight, and not competitive on packages over 20 lb.
Who should use USPS Priority Mail International
- First-time senders who don’t have a casillero account
- Sporadic senders (a few packages a year) where a $99 Quick Box subscription doesn’t pencil out
- Anyone who values federal-government-operator trust over a small diaspora courier’s quote
- Dense, heavy packages that fit in the 20 lb medium/large flat-rate box — this is USPS’s sweet spot
- Documents and small personal items — small flat-rate box at $33.75 is hard to beat for 1-4 lb
Who should NOT use USPS
- Amazon shoppers — casillero (Quick Box, CPX, Guatebox) beats USPS for regular US online shopping
- Large boxes over 20 lb — use King Express, casillero, or a diaspora courier
- Urgent time-sensitive shipments — use DHL or FedEx (2-5 days, guaranteed tracking)
- Commercial bulk — King Express Commercial tier at $3.50/lb for 220+ lb beats USPS
