This page explains how an affiliated worker registers a wife, children or partner as beneficiaries with Guatemala’s social security institute, the IGSS (Instituto Guatemalteco de Seguridad Social). For the wider system, see the IGSS guide.

The requirements come from the official IGSS page on registering workers’ beneficiaries, checked 21 October 2026. Coverage and age details come from an IGSS news note dated 24 January 2022 and are labelled as such.

Registering online, step by step

IGSS publishes these steps for the online route, which covers the wife and the children:

  1. Scan the documents in the table above as PDFs.
  2. Go to servicios.igssgt.org/servicios/Beneficiarios.
  3. Choose the option Solicitud de Inscripción de Beneficiario de Afiliado Trabajador.
  4. Fill in the information the form asks for.
  5. When you finish, you receive an email with a request number that lets you check the status.
  6. If the request is approved, an email brings the Constancia de Inscripción del Beneficiario.

The 2022 IGSS note says the registration is completed by the Dirección de Recaudación through its Departamento de Registro de Patronos y Trabajadores. The same note describes a portal option to check the status of the request.

Registering in person, step by step

  1. Your employer fills in, signs and stamps the Formulario Único de Registro de Afiliados DRPT-59 and hands it to you.
  2. You or the beneficiary go to Oficinas Centrales, a Caja or a Delegación Departamental with the form and the documents in the table.
  3. IGSS staff review the documents and confirm whether the service is a new registration or a data update.
  4. You receive a Constancia de Afiliación. IGSS reminds affiliates that any IGSS procedure is identified with the DPI.

The IGSS page words the form requirement as “Formulario DRPT-59 lleno, firmado y sellado por el patrono” (form DRPT-59 filled in, signed and stamped by the employer).

If you are not married: registering a partner

The IGSS requirements page says that partners (beneficiarias compañeras) are registered by going to the periférica. The 2022 IGSS note puts it this way: “La inscripción de convivientes o compañeras no está disponible en línea” (registration of cohabiting partners is not available online). It adds that this is done the traditional way, after the Social Work Department evaluates the case.

Neither IGSS page used here lists the documents for a partner. Ask at your periférica or on 1522 before you go. The 2022 note gives extensions 1200, 1201 and 1202 on 1522 and WhatsApp 4602 9259.

What registration covers

The current requirements page does not describe coverage. The IGSS note of 24 January 2022 says:

  • The affiliate’s wife or “hijos menores de 7 años” (children under 7) can receive health coverage. Elsewhere the same note says hasta los 7 años (up to age 7).
  • For the wife, the benefit covers maternity, with prenatal and postnatal care. Program details are in the IGSS maternity guide.
  • Children are covered by the Programa Niño Sano.
  • Having beneficiaries does not raise the affiliate’s premium or monthly contribution.

After the certificate: medical accreditation

IGSS says that with the Constancia de Inscripción the beneficiary goes to their periférica to request medical accreditation (acreditación médica). The 2022 note describes this as registering at the medical unit for the place of residence, so a medical file is opened and care can begin.

For later appointments, see the guide to IGSS medical appointments.
