What Is the IGSS Medical Appointment
An IGSS medical appointment is the scheduled outpatient consultation you receive as an affiliate of the EMA program (Sickness, Maternity and Accidents). It covers general medicine and every specialty available at IGSS hospitals and clinics nationwide. As an active contributor, you pay nothing for the consultation, diagnostic exams, or medications from the basic IGSS formulary.
Before 2024, appointments were booked in person by lining up at your assigned unit at 5 a.m. Today IGSS has modernized the system, and you can book in minutes from your phone.
Requirements
- Active IGSS affiliate number (contributor with at least 1 month paid by the employer)
- Valid DPI of the affiliate (or beneficiary’s document if the appointment is for a spouse or child)
- Confirmed assigned medical unit (check at igssgt.org/afiliados or by calling 1522)
- Up-to-date mobile phone in your affiliate profile (you receive an SMS confirmation)
- For beneficiaries: marriage certificate (spouse) or birth certificate (children)
Step-by-Step: 4 Ways to Book
Way 1: Web Portal (recommended)
- Go to igssgt.org/servicios-electronicos from any browser
- Select “Cita Medica” from the services menu
- Enter your affiliate number and DPI to authenticate
- Choose your medical unit and the specialty you need
- Pick a day and time from available slots
- Confirm the appointment and save the confirmation number (also sent by SMS)
- Arrive 30 minutes early with your DPI and IGSS card on the day of the appointment
Way 2: IGSS Mobile App
- Download the app “IGSS Guatemala” from Google Play or the App Store (free)
- Sign up with your affiliate number, DPI, and email
- Sign in with biometrics or PIN once registered
- Tap “Agendar Cita” and follow the same steps as the web portal
- Receive a push notification 24 hours before the appointment
Way 3: WhatsApp 5321-4477
- Save the number 5321-4477 in your contacts as “IGSS Citas”
- Send “Hola” or “Cita” and the bot will reply with the menu
- Provide your affiliate number when prompted
- Follow the conversational flow to choose specialty, unit, and time
- Confirm with the numeric code the bot sends you
Way 4: 1522 Hotline
- Dial 1522 from any landline or mobile in Guatemala (free from IGSS-partnered lines, local rate from others)
- Choose option 1 on the IVR menu (“Cita medica”)

- Get the appointment code by SMS at the registered phone

This usually happens when your employer has not yet processed your first contribution or if you were recently dropped. Verify your contribution status by calling 1522 or requesting your proof of contributions. If your employer deducts IGSS from your check but you don’t appear in the system, that may be fraud — report it at the IGSS office in your zone.

Check that your phone number is current at igssgt.org/afiliados. Many affiliates have an old number on file. To update, sign into the portal with your DPI and affiliate number, go to “Datos personales,” and change the number. The change is effective immediately. Also check that the SMS isn’t being filtered as spam.

The assigned medical unit is set automatically based on the zone where your employer is located, not where you live. If another unit is more convenient (because of relocation or shift change), request a unit change at any IGSS office with your DPI and proof of address. The change takes 5-10 business days.
Details
Most specialties require a referral from a general medicine doctor. You first book general medicine, get examined, and if a cardiologist, neurologist, etc., is needed, you receive a referral order. With that order you can then book the specialty. Only gynecology, pediatrics, and dentistry can be booked directly without a prior referral.
