  • Tax compliance status (this is a SAT matter — see RM vs SAT)
  • Financial statements (these go to Diario Oficial, not RM portal)

Step 1 — Open the portal

Navigate to consulta.registromercantil.gob.gt in any browser. No login or registration required.

Step 2 — Choose your search method

The portal offers several search methods:

MethodUse when
Buscar por Denominacion (by name)You know the business name
Buscar por Numero de Inscripcion (by RM number)You have the RM inscription number
Buscar por Representante (by legal representative)You’re verifying a person’s affiliations

Step 3 — Enter the search term

For a name search:

  • Type the business name as exactly as you know it
  • Try variations if the first attempt returns no results (with/without “S.A.”, with/without accents)
  • The portal often does partial matching, so a substring works

For an inscription-number search:

  • Enter the exact RM number (numeric or alphanumeric depending on era of inscription)

Step 4 — Review results

The portal returns a list of matching businesses. Click into a specific result for detailed registration data. The detail page shows everything in the “What information is publicly available” table above.

Step 5 — Request paid certification if needed

For legal or due-diligence purposes that require official certified copies:

  1. Note the RM inscription number from the free search
  2. Go to RM e-Tramites
  3. Request the specific certification (constitutive deed copy, full partner history, etc.)
  4. Pay the Q25-50 fee
  5. Receive the certified document (typically 3-7 business days)

Common use cases

Case 1 — Verify a supplier before signing a contract

You’re a US company about to sign a $50,000 contract with a Guatemalan supplier. Before signing:

  1. Search the supplier at RM by name
  2. Confirm they are registered, the legal form matches their representation, and the status is “Activo”
  3. Note who the legal representative is — verify the person signing your contract matches
  4. Check the corporate purpose includes the activity you’re contracting for
  5. If the contract is large, request a paid certification of the constitutive deed for your records

Case 2 — Customer claims to be a registered business

A new customer asks to invoice them as a corporate entity. Before issuing FEL invoices:

  1. Search by their reported business name
  2. Confirm inscription number matches what they provided
  3. Check the fiscal domicile matches the address on their PO
  4. Verify the legal representative’s name

This is a basic check against fraudulent or unregistered entities posing as legitimate buyers.

Case 3 — Due diligence for acquisition

You’re acquiring a Guatemalan business. Use RM search to:

  1. Verify current status and inscription history
  2. Identify all partners and their stakes (then request certified deed for full text)
  3. Check for capital modifications, partner changes, or special amendments
  4. Confirm corporate purpose matches what the seller represents
  5. Cross-check with SAT solvencia fiscal for tax compliance

Case 4 — Verify your own registration

You incorporated months ago and want to confirm everything is correct:

  1. Search by your business name
  2. Verify all data matches your records (inscription number, partners, capital, address)
  3. Confirm status is “Activo”
  4. Confirm books have been authorized (if applicable)
  5. If anything is wrong, file an amendment at RM e-Tramites

Case 5 — Journalist / researcher checking a public figure

A public figure is reported to own a business. Search RM by their name as legal representative or as a partner (if the portal allows). Note: free search returns summary partner information; certified deed needed for full partner stakes.

Search tips and tricks

TipWhy it helps
Try with and without S.A./S.R.L. suffixDatabase may match “Empresa X” or “Empresa X, S.A.” differently
Try without accentsSome databases strip accents; others keep them
Try partial substringLong names sometimes match better with a 2-3 word substring
Check for trade name vs corporate nameA trade name (nombre comercial) may differ from the registered corporate name
Use RM inscription number when availableMost precise method, returns one result
Search by representative nameFinds all businesses a person represents
Cross-check with SAT NIT searchBoth portals together give the most complete picture

What if the business is not in the RM database

If a business claims to be registered but does not appear in RM search, possible reasons:

ReasonAction
Misspelled nameTry variations, partial matches
Registered under different nameAsk for the exact registered name (denominacion social)
Registered under a trade name onlySearch by the corporate name not the trade name
Not actually registeredThe business is operating without RM inscription — major red flag
Database lagBrand-new inscriptions may take a few days to appear
Cancelled inscriptionCheck status; cancelled inscriptions remain searchable but show “Cancelado”
Liberal professional (Art. 9)Lawyers, doctors, etc. don’t appear in RM — check colegio profesional instead

If a counterparty cannot produce verifiable RM data and is not in an Art. 9 excluded category, treat that as a significant red flag for any commercial transaction.

US diaspora — searching from abroad

The portal is fully accessible from the USA or anywhere with internet. Practical notes:

  • Interface language: Spanish. Use browser auto-translate (Google Translate, Chrome built-in) for English UI.
  • Time zone: Data is live regardless of your location.
  • Identity verification: Not required for basic search.
  • Payment for certifications: Some banks accept international cards for Q25-50 RM payments; alternatively, your gestor pays in Guatemala.
  • Receiving certified documents: Digital PDFs delivered via e-Tramites; physical mailing internationally is possible but slow.
