As of 4 November 2026, the newest official word on the Flores causeway (the puente relleno linking Flores island to Santa Elena) dates from 21 June 2026. That day the state news agency AGN reported that teams from Guatemala’s roads directorate (Dirección General de Caminos) had been inspecting the structure since 17 June. Local press later followed the repairs, and undated posts by two Petén journalists said the town hall had reopened the causeway to vehicles. None of the official channels below had confirmed a reopening date by 4 November 2026. Check with your hotel or shuttle company before relying on vehicle access to the island.

TL;DR: One side of the causeway collapsed on 16 June 2026 (La Hora, citing CONRED). From 18 June the town hall allowed pedestrians, emergency vehicles and residents’ cars with a sticker, and advised boats. Repairs were 50% complete on 2 July, and paving began on 18 July. Journalists later reported a reopening without dating it. AGN’s last official update is from 21 June 2026.

What the causeway is and why it matters

Flores is an island town on Lake Petén Itzá, joined to Santa Elena on the mainland by the causeway. AGN described the filled causeway in August 2025 as the main way into Flores, important for tourism, residents’ movement and supplies. In June 2026 CONRED, as quoted by La Hora, called it the island’s principal land access.

The trouble started well before 2026. On 11 August 2025 AGN reported that undermining at the base of the causeway had been affecting it for several months. AGN reported that representatives of the Ministry of Communications, the roads directorate, the town hall, both neighbourhoods’ community councils and CONRED met at the Petén governor’s office. At a meeting reported by AGN on 25 August 2025, the town hall and INGUAT were given the job of carrying out the technical studies for a file to be presented to CONRED.

Who is responsible

Responsibility was disputed through May 2026:

  • 12 May 2026: at a public meeting in Petén, President Bernardo Arévalo said the government was ready to do the work. He added that the causeway belongs to the municipality and is not part of the national road network, a legal and administrative limit on state intervention. Talks on handing it over had begun (AGN).
  • 18–19 May 2026: CIV stated that the causeway is not on the roads directorate’s inventory and remains the Municipalidad de Flores’ responsibility. It asked the mayor to start the registration process (Diario de Centro América, AGN).
  • 27 May 2026: CONRED briefed Petén’s departmental development council on the causeway’s condition (AGN).
  • 21 June 2026: after the collapse, CIV said it was giving the town hall technical and administrative help to bring the causeway into the national network (AGN).

What this means for your trip

  • Arriving by shuttle or taxi: ask whether the driver can cross onto the island or will stop on the Santa Elena side. For the airport leg, see Flores airport to Tikal.
  • If vehicles cannot cross: in June 2026 the town hall kept the causeway open to pedestrians and pointed visitors to boats across the lake.
  • Tikal day trips: the Tikal ticket site puts the park 63 km, about 1 hour, from Flores. Ask your operator where the pickup will be. Route options are on Flores to Tikal.
  • Choosing a base: if island access matters (heavy luggage, limited mobility), compare Flores, El Remate and the lodges inside the park in where to stay near Tikal.
  • Continuing to Belize: for the onward road to the border, see the Melchor de Mencos border crossing.

For the town itself, see the Flores municipality profile.

What is not published

As of 4 November 2026, no official source had published:

  • a reopening date or conditions (lanes, weight limits, hours),
  • whether the causeway has been added to the national road network,
  • a completion date for the rehabilitation CIV said it was studying in June.

This covers AGN’s search and its causeway tag page, the Diario de Centro América search, CONRED’s site search and the Municipalidad de Flores website. It does not cover the town hall’s Facebook page.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you drive onto Flores island in November 2026?

The last official statement, from the state news agency AGN on 21 June 2026, says Guatemala’s roads directorate was still inspecting the causeway and gives no reopening date. Undated Facebook posts by two Petén journalists report that the Municipalidad de Flores has reopened the causeway to vehicles. As of 4 November 2026, AGN, the Diario de Centro América and CONRED had published nothing newer, so ask your hotel or shuttle company before you travel.

What happened to the Flores causeway?

La Hora reported on 16 June 2026 that one of the side embankments of the filled causeway between Santa Elena and Flores island had collapsed, and that CONRED teams were assessing the damage. Erosion of the causeway’s base had been reported since 2025: AGN wrote on 11 August 2025 that the undermining had been affecting it for several months.

Could you still walk onto the island during the restriction?

Yes. When the town hall closed the causeway to most vehicles on 18 June 2026, Emisoras Unidas reported that pedestrian access stayed open and that residents and visitors were advised to use boats across the lake. Emergency vehicles, identified medical staff and pre-authorised residents’ cars carrying their sticker could still cross.

Who is responsible for repairing the causeway?

The Ministry of Communications (CIV) said in May 2026 that the causeway is not on the national road inventory and is the Municipalidad de Flores’ responsibility. On 21 June 2026 CIV said it was helping the town hall to add the causeway to the national road network.

Does the causeway affect trips to Tikal?

Only the short link between Flores island and Santa Elena. The Tikal ticket site measures the park as 63 km, about 1 hour, from Flores, and the road to Tikal is a separate route. Confirm with your operator whether the pickup is on the island or in Santa Elena.
