Holy Week 2027 runs from March 21 to March 28, from Palm Sunday to Easter Sunday. For a beach or lake visit, the key advice from IGSS is to swim where lifeguards are present and follow their instructions; last year’s coverage does not guarantee the same service for your trip.

Lifeguards, locations and hours in 2026
IGSS announced 150 members of its Cuerpo de Salvamento (lifeguard corps). The destinations listed were Las Lisas, Monterrico, Iztapa, Tilapa Isla El Tular, Puerto de San José, El Paredón, La Empalizada, El Semillero, Tecojate, Tulate, Champerico, Ocós, Lake Atitlán, Centro Recreativo del Nororiente de Chiquimula Guayacán and Centro Recreativo Las Ninfas in Amatitlán.
The announced 2026 hours ran from 6 in the morning to 6 in the evening. IGSS warned that after those hours its lifeguard service would no longer be there to respond. It also announced a health post with medical personnel at Puerto San José.
In its results report, IGSS described coverage from April 01 to April 05, 2026:
| Measure | IGSS’s 2026 result |
|---|---|
| Bathers protected at its covered destinations | 823,377 |
| Puerto San José attendance | IGSS estimated 220,000 people |
| People rescued | 421 |
| Rescued people who received cardiopulmonary resuscitation | 6 |
| Rescues at Puerto San José | 138 |
| Preventive actions | 14,976 |
IGSS said it doubled the number of lifeguards normally covering Puerto San José. Its preventive patrols warned bathers about alfaques and gave advice to prevent emergencies.
IGSS reported no drownings during its Cuerpo de Salvamento’s coverage hours. Keep that limit in mind: the statement is about its coverage, not all waters or all hours throughout Guatemala.
PROVIAL, DGT and PNC road measures in 2026
The official road-safety announcement described joint work from March 23 to April 06, 2026, involving more than 900 people from DGT inspection teams, PROVIAL brigades and PNC traffic units. The controls aimed to keep traffic moving, assist drivers and check compliance with road-safety rules. These campaign dates do not establish a daily contraflujo, or reversible-lane, timetable.
Officials’ safety advice for your visit
Swim near lifeguards and follow their instructions. That is the IGSS recommendation; verify their presence and local instructions when you arrive.
CONRED’s prevention advice for Pacific and Caribbean beaches was to observe recommended sea-entry hours, use sunscreen and a hat or cap, stay hydrated and avoid prolonged sun exposure. The notice did not specify a universal sea-entry timetable.
For the drive, CONRED advised checking the vehicle before departure, avoiding driving while intoxicated, wearing a seat belt, respecting traffic signs and driving responsibly. It also advised disposing of rubbish correctly and reducing single-use plastics. For an emergency or disaster, its advice was to contact rescue services, local authorities or 119, CONRED’s number.
Water conditions: what the historical observation means
MAGA documented sargassum in smaller quantities at Punta Cocolí, in the Caribbean monitoring area, in 2026. This was an environmental observation, not a bathing-water health clearance, a finding for Pacific beaches or a forecast for 2027.
A MARN search did not establish site-specific bathing-water status, and the MSPAS search could not be accessed on 23 October 2026. Check the current local advice before entering the water; the historical reports do not establish current water safety.
