What “IB school” means here

The IB’s register lists SEK Guatemala for the Primary Years Programme only: no Middle Years Programme, no Diploma Programme. The school describes it the same way — PYP teachers in Preschool and Primary, students completing the PYP “by the end of 6th grade”, and teacher training in Secondary and Baccalaureate that it is “currently strengthening”.

So the IB part of a SEK education ends at sixth grade. For the bachillerato, the school describes a high school diploma and “direct access to the University of the Valley of Guatemala (UVG)”. A family that needs the IB Diploma at 16 will be looking at a different school: the five Diploma schools on the register are El Roble, Campoalegre, Entrevalles, Solalto — Solalto also in Fraijanes — and Antigua Montessori School.

A language note. The IB records SEK’s language of instruction as Spanish only; the school says it teaches “primarily in Spanish and English” and that “a significant portion of the curriculum is taught in English” in primary. Ask how much of your child’s day will be in English at their grade.

“The first school in Guatemala to implement this program.” The school says so on its primary and FAQ pages. The register is consistent with that: SEK is the only Guatemalan school it lists for the PYP.

Daily life: what the school publishes

  • Hours. 7:15 a.m. to 3:15 p.m., longer than the APDE schools’ 7:00 a.m.–1:15 p.m. day. Extracurriculars run to 4:20 p.m.
  • Lunch. “we have our own kitchen, offering our students healthy and balanced menus adapted to different nutritional needs.”
  • Bus routes, as the FAQ lists them: El Salvador Highway from km 24.5 (gated communities near the highway and stops inside CAES); Zone 14 and 20th Street; Vista Hermosa to San Martín or the detour toward Zone 16; Zone 16 up to the Santa Amelia checkpoint. Parents track the bus in the BatOnRoute app. The FAQ gives no bus prices.
  • Admissions. Application, a one-on-one family interview, a school tour, an admissions test and a document review. No document list for a child arriving from abroad is published; MINEDUC’s rules are on enrolling a foreign child in a Guatemalan school.
  • International programmes inside the SEK network: an academic stay at Boca Prep International School in the USA (ages 14 to 18), St. John’s School in the UK, inter-school sports and cultural competitions, a Green Week in Costa Rica and a work-immersion Bridge Program. The FAQ describes the network as “17 countries and 25 schools”; the international-programmes page calls its sports event “26 schools, one competition”. Both are the school’s own figures.

Fees: what changed since September

When we first read SEK’s site on 3 September 2026, its application fee appeared as “Q590 (Quinientos cincuenta quetzales)” — a numeral and words that disagree, which is why we never published either. On 2 October 2026 neither the English nor the Spanish admissions page, nor either FAQ page, carries any fee at all. Ask the school for its fee schedule in writing.

The school year

SEK’s pages that we read do not give the school-year months. The IB record carries a November “Examinations” field, but SEK is registered for primary only, so we do not read a school calendar from it. MINEDUC’s 2026 private-school calendar ran classes from 12 January to 15 October, and a separate agreement covers schools authorised for a plan internacional — see the MINEDUC school calendar and confirm SEK’s own dates with the school.

Read 2 October 2026: the IB register and IB school page 063743, MINEDUC’s establishment search, and SEK Guatemala’s FAQ, admissions, primary, baccalaureate, history and international-programmes pages (English and Spanish). Confirm fees, routes and hours with the school.
