Three programmes stacked in one school

The school’s English homepage describes three stages:

GradesProgramme, in the school’s words
Preschool – 4th gradeMontessori, “Certified under the International Montessori Council (IMC).”
5th – 8th gradeYoung Scholars for Innovation and Entrepreneurship, “Preparatory program for the International Baccalaureate”
Junior – Senior YearNo programme name; the line reads “We begin the accreditation process in October.”

The school’s own site is behind the IB’s register. That last line describes an authorisation still to come for the final two years. The IB’s register has listed AMS as authorised for the Diploma Programme since 20 December 2024. For a family, the register is the document that settles whether a school is an IB World School.

The school’s Middle Years label is not the IB’s MYP. The English version of the school’s IB page heads its grades 5–8 section “Middle Years Programme”; the Spanish version heads it “Programas Intermedios”. What it describes is the school’s own Young Scholars programme, built on “estándares internacionales de grado” from the IB. The IB register lists AMS for the Diploma Programme only. The IMC certification is the school’s own claim; we did not check it with the IMC.

What else the school publishes

  • English. In 3rd–4th primaria, science is taught with “una instrucción del 40% español y 60% inglés”. From middle school, students sit an annual English assessment run with the Universidad del Valle de Guatemala’s education research centre and receive a certificate of their level.
  • US exchange. “Our students can choose to attend one of 65 private schools in the United States during the months of October to December.”
  • Admissions. A visit-booking form that asks for the student’s grade and date of birth, both parents’ details including DPI or passport and nationality, and references. No document list for a child arriving from abroad; MINEDUC’s rules are on enrolling a foreign child in a Guatemalan school.
  • Teacher training. The site’s menu carries an “AMI Teacher Certification” section.

The school year

Not published on the pages we read. AMS is the only Guatemalan IB school that sits the May session; the other five sit November. May goes with an August-to-June year, which would put AMS on the northern calendar alongside Antigua International School — but that is an inference from the exam month. If you are arriving in January expecting a Guatemalan-calendar school, ask first. The official MINEDUC calendars are on the MINEDUC school calendar.

Older registrations under Antigua Guatemala

MINEDUC still lists two older AMS registrations in Antigua Guatemala — “CENTRO EDUCATIVO ANTIGUA MONTESSORI” (primaria) and “CENTRO EDUCATIVO PREESCOLAR ANTIGUA MONTESSORI” (párvulos) in San Pedro El Panorama — one closed definitively and one temporarily. The four open codes are all in Ciudad Vieja. A search result or an old directory that puts the school in Antigua’s San Pedro El Panorama is out of date.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Antigua Montessori School an IB school?

Yes. The IB’s register lists Antigua Montessori School (IB school code 063597) as an IB World School authorised for the Diploma Programme on 20 December 2024, teaching in English and Spanish, coeducational, day school, with a May examination session.

Is Antigua Montessori School in Antigua?

No — in the neighbouring municipio of Ciudad Vieja, at Km 52 Carretera a San Miguel Dueñas. MINEDUC’s registry shows its older registrations in Antigua Guatemala (San Pedro El Panorama) as closed and its four current codes in Ciudad Vieja as open.

Does Antigua Montessori School offer the IB Middle Years Programme?

Not according to the IB. The register lists the school for the Diploma Programme only. The school’s English site heads its grades 5-8 section ‘Middle Years Programme’, but the programme it describes there is its own Young Scholars for Innovation and Entrepreneurship, which it calls a preparatory programme for the IB.

How much does Antigua Montessori School cost?

It does not publish fees. Its admissions page is a visit-booking form; no figure in any currency appeared on the pages we read on 2 October 2026.

Which school calendar does Antigua Montessori School follow?

It does not publish one on the pages we read. Its IB students sit the May exam session, the session that goes with an August-to-June year, while the other five Guatemalan IB schools sit November. That is an inference from the exam month, not a published calendar, so ask the school.
