These are the only two events with a confirmed day, time and venue in the official reports we captured. Everything else in the programme still has to be announced.

What is free

The Ministry of Culture and Sports (MCD) is taking part with 35 free activities. Diario de Centro América names performances by the Quinteto Xocomil, the Cuarteto Primavera and other institutional ensembles, plus activities to promote the practice and knowledge of the pelota maya (the Maya ball game). Dates, times and venues for these 35 were not in the reports.

For the rest of the roughly 150 activities, the reports do not say what is free and what is ticketed. We will not guess: check each event’s listing once the programme is out.

What is on the programme

According to Diario de Centro América, the eleven days mix:

  • exhibitions and concerts
  • theatre and other stage shows
  • workshops and talks
  • guided tours of the historic centre
  • activities for the whole family
  • a day devoted to urban revitalisation

International guests: the embassies of Canada, Mexico, El Salvador, Peru, Italy and Spain take part, along with artists from Honduras and Cuba; one of the three reports also lists artists from the United States.

What has not been published yet

As of September 30, 2026, we could not find:

  • The day-by-day programme. Diario de Centro América says the programme was presented by María José Avendaño, president of the organising committee, but none of its three reports publishes it or links to it. The Ministry of Culture’s website still carries a page for the 2024 edition only, and the Municipalidad de Guatemala’s site refused our automated check, so we could not confirm whether it has posted one.
  • The full list of venues. Only the Catedral Metropolitana and the Plaza de la Constitución are named.
  • Ticket prices for anything outside the 35 free MCD activities.
  • Road closures or transport arrangements for the opening, the closing or the urban-revitalisation day.

The Ministry of Culture announced the festival on its X account (@McdGuate) on September 29, 2026, and that account is one place to watch for the schedule. We will add it here when it appears.

Getting to zona 1

The festival sits in the historic centre, so plan the trip as you would any evening in zona 1:

No festival-specific road closures or parking plans had been announced when we checked.

Why 1998, and why this year

María José Avendaño told the presentation that the festival has run without interruption since 1998, the year the Centro Histórico was declared Cultural Heritage of the Nation (Patrimonio Cultural de la Nación). The 2026 edition is also linked to the celebrations of the 250th anniversary of the founding of Guatemala City (Diario de Centro América, September 29, 2026). The vice minister of culture, Emiliano Valdés Melendreras, said at the presentation that heritage lives not only in buildings and squares but in people too, and the authorities invited residents and visitors to walk the historic centre during the festival.
