Hospitals and Emergency Care in Quetzaltenango (Xela)

Xela’s public hospital is the Hospital Regional de Occidente (0 Calle 36-40, Zona 8), and the city has several private hospitals.

Private Options

The UK government (FCDO) list of medical facilities includes Hospital Privado La Democracia (13 Avenida 6-51, Zona 3), which it says attends all areas of medicine and has English-speaking staff, and Hospital Privado Quetzaltenango (Calle Rodolfo Robles 23-51, Zona 1), which it lists for general practitioners, emergencies and all areas of medicine. The listings also include Hospital de Especialidades de Occidente; we could not verify its phone.

Public Hospital

The FCDO list says the Hospital Regional de Occidente attends emergencies and all areas of medicine, and marks it as a public facility where you will not need to pay for treatment. The Ministry of Health registry lists, among other services, surgery, internal medicine, obstetrics and gynaecology, paediatrics, traumatology and orthopaedics, MRI, intensive care and haemodialysis.

Spanish School Students

Many students studying Spanish in Xela may need medical care at some point during extended stays. We found no published consultation prices for Xela’s private hospitals, so ask before you are seen. On English, the FCDO list says La Democracia has English-speaking staff and Hospital Privado Quetzaltenango and the Hospital Regional de Occidente do not.
