Hospitals and Emergency Care in Antigua Guatemala

Antigua has two main hospital options: Hospital Privado Hermano Pedro for private care and Hospital Nacional Pedro de Bethancourt for public care. For serious emergencies, patients may be transferred to Guatemala City hospitals.

For Tourists and Expats

Hospital Privado Hermano Pedro (Avenida La Recolección #4, phone 7790-2000) says on its own site that it runs emergencies and hospitalisation 24 hours a day, 7 days a week; its Emergencias 24/7 link opens WhatsApp +502 5708-8568. The UK government’s list of medical facilities in Guatemala (FCDO, updated December 2025) includes it and notes English-speaking staff, and says its list is not an endorsement. The US Embassy publishes provider lists for Guatemala City only, not for Antigua.

Corrected 16 October 2026: this page previously said the US Embassy lists Hermano Pedro as a recommended facility (it has no Antigua list, and its lists are not endorsements), carried phone numbers and an address for Hermano Pedro and Pedro de Bethancourt that neither hospital publishes, and listed a clinic whose phone number we could not trace to it. All three are fixed or removed.

Public Hospital Option

Hospital Pedro de Bethancourt, in the nearby village of San Felipe de Jesús, is the main public hospital for Sacatepequez. The UK government (FCDO) list marks it as a public facility where you will not need to pay for treatment. The Ministry of Health registry lists medicine, surgery, paediatrics, gynaecology, maternity, traumatology and intensive care there (7774-1414). We found no published statement of its emergency hours.
