The change of name or owner of a transport company registered as an individual person is one of the most common procedures before the General Directorate of Transport (DGTT) of the Ministry of Communications, Infrastructure and Housing (MICIVI). It applies to cargo, intercity, school, tourist or taxi transport operators when there is a change in the holder of the authorized service.
Quick summary: If you changed your legal name on your DPI or you sell your transport company to another person, you must register the modification at MICIVI’s DGTT. In-person procedure, file with original documents, variable cost and 15 to 30 business days.
What is this procedure?
It is the update of a transport company (individual person) record before the DGTT when one of two cases occurs:
- Name change: the holder’s legal name changes (e.g., RENAP correction, marriage or court order) but ownership remains the same.
- Owner change: ownership of the service is transferred to another individual person via sale contract, assignment of rights or judicial award.
In both cases the company keeps its current permits and authorization; only the person or name in the official record is modified.
Requirements
DGTT may request additional requirements depending on the service category (cargo, intercity, school, taxi). This is the base list to open the file:
- Written request addressed to the General Director of Transport, stating the reason for the change.
- MICIVI form properly completed and signed by the current holder or buyer (as applicable).
- DPI of the current holder and, in an owner change, of the new holder (original and clear photocopy).
- RENAP certification of the name change, if it is a legal name change.
- Sale or assignment contract in public deed or private document with legalized signatures, if it is an owner change.
- Proof of payment of the DGTT administrative fee and corresponding fiscal stamps.
- Tax solvency certificate issued by SAT.
- Vehicle registration cards and operation cards for the authorized units.
- Prior authorization resolution of the transport company being modified.
- Special power of attorney notarized, if a third party (gestor or attorney) submits the file.
Tip: bring all originals and two sets of photocopies. DGTT usually keeps stamped copies and returns originals.
Steps
1. Gather the documentation
Verify that you have a valid DPI, signed contract or RENAP certification, SAT tax solvency, and the current resolution of your transport company. Without these the file will not be admitted.
2. Visit the DGTT counter (MICIVI)
DGTT is located in zone 1 of Guatemala City, inside the MICIVI offices. Request the official requirements list for your service category (cargo, intercity, school, taxi or tourist).
3. Pay the fee and stamps
At the counter you receive the payment order. Pay the DGTT administrative fee and buy the corresponding fiscal stamps. Keep the receipts to attach to the file.
4. Submit the complete file
Hand in the request, form, DPI, contract or RENAP certification, SAT tax solvency, vehicle registration and operation cards, and payment receipts. DGTT will assign you a file number to follow up.
5. Wait for the resolution
DGTT reviews the file. If everything is in order, it issues the modification resolution that replaces the previous holder. If corrections are required, you must respond with the additional documents within the indicated period.
6. Update your NIT and vehicle registry
Once the resolution is issued, update your data at SAT and, if applicable, at the vehicle registry and the SAT vehicle title transfer.
