If you are a foreigner working in Guatemala — hired by a local company, working remotely for an employer abroad, or self-employed — the legal pathway is temporary residency in IGM’s Workers category. The current regulation (Acuerdo IGM-016-2025) recognizes three distinct routes, each with different requirements, and mixing them up is the most common reason case files get bounced.
This guide covers all three routes, the full fee breakdown, and the piece most articles skip: the MINTRAB work permit is a separate, mandatory procedure whenever there is a Guatemalan employer.
Quick summary: Three routes — Guatemalan employer (job-offer letter + employer registered as guarantor), remote work (foreign income ≥ $2,000/month + international health insurance), and self-employment (notarized declaration + RTU). All pay $25 application + $200/1yr, $300/2yr or $500/3-5yr. With a local employer, the MINTRAB work permit is an additional separate procedure.
Information verified June 2026 directly from IGM’s residency catalog (igm.gob.gt).
The 3 Official Routes
| Route | Key requirement | Guarantor | MINTRAB permit |
|---|---|---|---|
| a) Guatemalan employer | Original job-offer letter + proof the employer is registered as guarantor with IGM | Yes (the employer) | Yes, mandatory |
| b) Foreign employer (remote) | Bank statements showing foreign income ≥ $2,000/month ($3,000 with dependents) + international health insurance | No | No |
| c) Self-employment | Notarized sworn declaration of activities + RTU (SAT tax registration) + commercial activity authorization | No | No |
Route (b) is what’s popularly called the “digital nomad visa” — we have a dedicated guide. This page covers the full category.
General Requirements (all routes)
From IGM’s official catalog:
- Application form (principal / dependent) — igm.gob.gt/formularios-tramites-de-extranjeria/; filed in a legal-size folder of the indicated color
- Valid original passport + full notarized copy
- Criminal and police background check from your home country, apostilled or consular-legalized
- Migration movement certificate of your last entry (issued by IGM)
- $25 USD application payment
Plus your route’s specific requirements (table above).
Step-by-Step Process (IGM’s 3 phases)
Phase 1 — Filing
- Gather everything, book a web appointment at igm.gob.gt, and go to the 2nd floor of IGM (6a Avenida 3-11, Zona 4): pre-review at the information window, full review at windows 1-3
- Pay the $25 payment order at the Banrural on the 1st floor and return for your case number (Hoja de Ingreso)
Phase 2 — Tracking
- An email arrives with your portal access key + SMS alerts
- If there’s a previo (correction request): the notification costs $5 and you have 30 calendar days to fix it or the case is archived
- You’ll be called to the interview by SMS
Phase 3 — Registration
- The payment order for the full amount ($200/$300/$500) arrives 24 hours before the final appointment
- Biometrics appointment (windows 12-13) with payment receipts + proof of address
- If your route is Guatemalan-employer: now process the MINTRAB work permit
- Go to RENAP for your DPI as a domiciled foreigner

Common Errors and Solutions
- Confusing residency with the work permit — with a Guatemalan employer you need BOTH: residency (IGM) + permit (MINTRAB). Working with only one leaves your status incomplete. Solution: start the MINTRAB permit as soon as your residency is registered.
- Employer not registered as guarantor — route (a) requires proof that the Guatemalan employer is registered as a guarantor with IGM. If your employer has never hired foreigners, that prior registration takes time. Solution: ask HR to confirm the registration BEFORE filing your case.
- Choosing the wrong route — filing as “traditional employee” when you actually work remotely for a foreign company (route b) or are self-employed (route c) delays the whole case. Solution: review the routes table before filling out the form; the form and folder color change by type.
- Self-employment without RTU — route (c) requires SAT tax registration on top of the notarized declaration. Solution: get your NIT and register your activity in the RTU before filing.
- Remote income below the threshold — route (b) requires $2,000/month shown via bank statements ($3,000 with dependents). Irregular deposits or balance screenshots don’t count. Solution: 6 months of statements with the recurring deposits highlighted.
- Missing the previo window — 30 calendar days or the case is archived and your fees are lost. Solution: check the portal with your access key weekly and keep your phone number current.
Path to Permanent Residency
After 5 years as a temporary work resident you can apply for permanent residency: one-time fee of $700 ($500 for Central American born), with certification of the 5 years, a notarized declaration of your economic activity, and a guarantor. After 5 more years as a domiciled foreigner, naturalization becomes available.
| Stage | Time / Cost |
|---|---|
| Temporary work residency | 1-5 years · $200-$500 |
| Extensions | while the employment/activity continues |
| Permanent residency | after 5 years · $700 one-time |
| Naturalization (optional) | after 5 years as domiciled foreigner |
