Is your Guatemalan passport about to expire? Before you pay USD $50 for a full renewal, read this: the IGM offers a free 18-month validity extension that most Guatemalans don’t know exists. It can save you the full process and the money.
Quick summary: Before paying USD $50, check if you qualify for the FREE 18-MONTH VALIDITY EXTENSION (once per lifetime). If you don’t qualify, full renewal costs USD $50 (5 years) or $85 (10 years), paid at Banrural, with an online appointment at servicios.igm.gob.gt/citasenlinea/, bringing your DPI + previous passport + receipt, and issued same-day at most sedes.
Fees and process verified May 2026 (sources: IGM, Prensa Libre, Soy502, AssistCard, Migración Guate). Payment is made in quetzales at the official IGM exchange rate of the day — see our exchange rate page for today’s rate.
Renew or Extend? Decision Tree
Three possible paths. Start with the cheapest:
| Your situation | Option | Cost | Validity gained |
|---|---|---|---|
| Adult + post-2013 passport + 2 blank pages + no data changes + not damaged + never extended before | Free 18-month extension | USD $0 | +18 months (once per lifetime) |
| Need 3 more years + passport has 4 blank pages + meets other conditions | Paid 3-year extension | USD $20 | +3 years |
| Any other case (name change, damaged, minor, already extended, no blank pages) | Full renewal | USD $50 or $85 | 5 or 10 new years |
Quick checklist: do you qualify for the free extension?
Check each box mentally. If you can say yes to all 6, the free extension is for you:
- ☐ You are 18 or older
- ☐ Your passport was issued in 2013 or later (biometric chip passport)
- ☐ It has at least 2 fully blank pages
- ☐ Your personal data hasn’t changed (same name and marital status that appear on the passport and on your current DPI)
- ☐ The passport is not damaged (not torn, stained, water-damaged, photo not peeling)
- ☐ You have never extended it before (once-per-passport benefit)
If you fail even one line, don’t waste time: skip ahead to the full renewal section.
Free 18-Month Validity Extension — USD $0
This is the option IGM doesn’t advertise well, and it saves USD $50 for everyone who qualifies. It’s a one-time-per-passport benefit that adds 18 months of validity without replacing the document — they place an official stamp/notation, and that’s it.
Where to go
- Centro Central de Emisión de Pasaportes — Plaza Ruta, 6a. Avenida 1-27 zona 4, Guatemala City (Monday-Friday 7:00-19:00)
- Aurora International Airport — extension counter, 3rd level (useful if you’re flying soon)
What to bring
- Valid DPI (original + photocopy of both sides on a single page)
- The original passport you want to extend
- Valid Boleto de Ornato (adults over 60 are exempt)
Important to know
- No online appointment needed. It’s a walk-in procedure, first-come-first-served.
- You pay nothing at Banrural. It’s free. If anyone (a gestor or intermediary) charges you “to speed it up,” that’s a scam — IGM warns about this explicitly.
- Same day. The extension is stamped on the spot and you leave with your passport ready.
- Does not add pages. If you’ve run out of blank pages, you don’t qualify — you need full renewal.
- One-time benefit. If you’ve ever extended this passport before (even years ago), you cannot extend it again.
Paid 3-Year Extension — USD $20
A middle option for those who need more time than the free 18 months but want to avoid paying for the full renewal. Costs USD $20 (paid at Banrural) and requires stricter conditions than the free version:
- Minimum 4 fully blank pages (vs 2 for the free one)
- Post-2013 passport with biometric chip
- No personal data changes
- Document not damaged
- Also a one-time-per-passport benefit — can’t be combined with the free extension on the same document
If you qualify for this option, do the math: 3 years at $20 = $6.67/year, vs the 10-year renewal at $85 = $8.50/year. The extension is cheaper per year, but the renewal gives you more years of peace of mind and a brand-new passport in optimal condition.
Full Renewal — Cost
If you don’t qualify for any extension, this is the standard path. Fees are the same as for a first-time passport:
| Validity | Cost USD | Approximate GTQ |
|---|---|---|
| 5 years | USD $50 | ~Q375 |
| 10 years (adults only) | USD $85 | ~Q640 |
Payment details:
- Paid exclusively at Banrural (any branch or via Banrural online banking)
- In quetzales, at the official IGM exchange rate of the day (not at bank exchange rate, not in dollars)
- The receipt is valid for 1 year from the payment date — if you don’t use it within that period, you lose the money
- IGM does not charge surcharges for replacement or urgency: any extra fee offered is from a gestor, not official
Validity recommendation: If you’ll be traveling in the coming years and you’re an adult, the 10-year passport offers better cost/year ratio ($8.50/year vs $10/year for 5 years). The 5-year option is better for minors and for anyone who’s likely to change name or marital status soon.
Full Renewal — Requirements
Bring everything in originals + photocopies (copies stay with IGM, originals are returned to you):
- Valid DPI — original and photocopy of both sides on a single page (physical copy, not phone photo)
- Previous passport — original. You turn it in when picking up the new passport (not before). If you lost it, the procedure changes to replacement, and you’ll need a PNC police report
- Original Banrural payment receipt (USD $50 or $85 by validity)
- Printed appointment confirmation from the online portal
- Application form — auto-generated when you book the appointment; print and sign it
- Valid Boleto de Ornato from the municipality where you live (adults over 60 are exempt)
Don’t bring photos. Biometric photo, fingerprints, and digital signature are taken at the sede during your appointment.
If you changed name, marital status, or any data: first update your DPI at RENAP, because IGM pulls data directly from the RENAP system. You cannot renew your passport with an outdated DPI.
Full Renewal — Step-by-Step
- Verify your DPI. It must be valid, in good physical condition, and with current data. If it’s expired, damaged, or has outdated data, fix it at RENAP first.
- Pay at Banrural. Go to any branch or use Banrural online banking and pay USD $50 or $85 (in quetzales, at the IGM official exchange rate of the day). Get the payment receipt — you need it on paper.
- Book your online appointment. Go to servicios.igm.gob.gt/citasenlinea/, select “Renovación de pasaporte,” enter the receipt number + your personal data, choose sede, date and time. Appointments are free — beware of any site that charges you.
- Print the appointment confirmation and the application form that’s auto-generated. Sign the form.
- Arrive 10-30 minutes early at the chosen sede with all original documents + photocopies.
- Biometric capture. At the sede they take your photo, fingerprints, and digital signature. Don’t bring photos.
- Passport delivery. At most sedes you receive your new passport the same day (some sedes take up to 3 business days). When picking up the new one, you surrender the previous passport.
Rescheduling: You can move the appointment up to 24 hours in advance through the appointment portal. Don’t no-show — some sedes have long waiting lists.
IGM Sedes and Hours
Guatemala has 7 official sedes for passport issuance; 6 offer same-day delivery. Separately, Aurora International Airport offers extensions only (not new passports).
| # | Sede | Address | Hours |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Centro Central (Plaza Ruta, Zona 4) — Capital | 6a. Avenida 1-27, Centro Comercial Plaza Ruta, zona 4, locales 1-5 | Mon-Fri 7:00-19:00 |
| 2 | Plaza FPK (Zona 9) — Capital | 11 calle 5-59, zona 9, Plaza FPK | Mon-Fri 7:00-15:00 |
| 3 | Quetzaltenango (Xela) | Avenida de Las Américas, zona 3, 2nd floor, office #2, CC Supercom Delco | Mon-Fri 7:00-19:00 |
| 4 | Chiquimula | 7 Avenida 5-47 zona 1, Centro Comercial Gran Avenida | Mon-Fri 7:00-15:00 |
| 5 | Zacapa (Río Hondo) | Km. 136.2 ruta al Atlántico, Río Hondo | Mon-Fri 7:00-15:00 |
| 6 | Petén (Santa Elena) | Locales 210 and 212, 2nd floor, CC Metro Plaza Mundo Maya, zona 0 | Mon-Fri 7:00-15:00 |
| 7 | Escuintla | Call 2411-2411 to confirm exact location | Mon-Fri 7:00-15:00 |
IGM national phone: 2411-2411 (routed to all sedes)
Confirmed 2026 Mobile Drives (Jornadas Móviles) — temporary service in departments without permanent sedes, same price and process: Mazatenango/Suchitepéquez (January), San Juan Tecuaco/Santa Rosa (May), Jalapa and Cubulco/Baja Verapaz (dates to be confirmed). Mobile drives are booked through the same portal servicios.igm.gob.gt/citasenlinea/.
Trick to book faster: capital sedes (Plaza Ruta and FPK) usually have longer waiting lists. Try Chiquimula, Zacapa, or Petén first — they often have next-day availability.
Photo Requirements
Don’t bring photos. IGM takes the biometric photo on-site during your appointment — along with fingerprints and digital signature. The equipment is the same at all sedes.
For the capture to come out right on the first try:
- Wear a solid-color shirt (avoid pure white because the photo background is white)
- No glasses (sunglasses or clear)
- No caps, hats, or accessories covering the face (exception: religious head covering)
- Neutral expression, mouth closed
- Avoid heavy makeup and colored contact lenses
- Remove any visible facial piercings
If the photo comes out blurry due to movement, they’ll retake it on the spot at no cost.
When Does Your Passport Expire? Plan Ahead
Even if your passport says “expires in 2027,” many countries require additional validity beyond your travel date. If you have travel planned, do this math first:
| Destination | Minimum validity required after your trip |
|---|---|
| Schengen Zone (Europe) | 6 months beyond your exit date |
| United States | Generally valid through return date (some cases require +6 months) |
| United Kingdom | Valid through return date |
| Mexico (CA-4 does NOT apply) | 6 months |
| China, Thailand, India, Brazil | 6 months |
| Central America (El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua) | No passport required (DPI suffices under CA-4) |
Practical recommendation: if your passport expires in the next 9 months and you have travel in mind, don’t wait until expiration. Apply for the free extension now (if you qualify) or renew. A last-minute appointment may not be available when you need it.
If You Live in the United States
If you’re in the US and need to renew, you don’t need to travel to Guatemala. Any of the 22 Guatemalan consulates processes renewals. Key differences vs in-country renewal:
- Higher fee: USD $65 for 5 years or USD $100 for 10 years (USD $15 consular surcharge over Guatemala fees)
- Processing time: 4-8 weeks (vs same day in Guatemala), because the application travels to IGM headquarters in Guatemala City for production
- Different appointment portal: citas.minex.gob.gt (consular system), not servicios.igm.gob.gt
- Payment in USD at the consulate window, often cash or money order
- The free 18-month extension isn’t always available at consulates — most process full renewal only
Recommendation: if you’re traveling to Guatemala soon, it’s cheaper to renew in Guatemala (cheaper + same day). Otherwise, plan your consular renewal at least 2-3 months ahead of your next international trip.

Common Reasons for Rejection or Delay
These are the most frequent causes of renewal delays or rejections:
- Expired or damaged DPI — wrinkled, faded, or photo-peeling DPI is rejected. Renew DPI at RENAP first.
- DPI with old data (name, marital status) — IGM pulls data from the RENAP system. If your DPI doesn’t show your current name, you can’t renew your passport.
- Expired payment receipt — the Banrural receipt is valid for 1 year from the payment date. If more time has passed, you lose the money.
- Outstanding IGM fines — debts for overstays or other fines must be paid first.
- Incomplete documentation — missing receipt, unsigned form, bad photocopy, or missing appointment confirmation.
- Previous passport not surrendered — when picking up the new one, you must turn in the old passport. If you lost it, the procedure changes to replacement and you need a PNC police report.
- Judicial restrictions — orders prohibiting passport issuance (custody disputes, criminal proceedings) — the system blocks automatically.
- Intermediaries/gestores — IGM warns the procedure is direct. If you pay a third party “to speed it up,” it may be a scam or illegal arrangement.
